White House official confirms comedian's prank-call to President Trump
JUNE 30, 3018
VIDEO -- Comedian John Melendez prank-called President Trump as Senator Bob Menendez.
A White House official speaking to ABC News confirmed that the audio of President Donald Trump speaking to comedian John Melendez is indeed authentic.
According to the White House official, the legislative affairs office was notified to have received a call from Senator Bob Menendez's office. In reality, it was Melendez.
It was discovered that Senator Menendez did not call the President after the White House contacted his office.
White House officials say the call was canceled but it still went through to Air Force One anyways*.
The comedian, who mentioned in his podcast that he was connected directly to the President's son-in-law Jared Kushner, said he was shocked to have been able to prank-call President Trump.
Melendez also took to Twitter to express he "enjoyed talking with Jared Kushner and President Trump."

Anyway or Anyways?
What’s the difference between anyway and anyways? Is one more correct than the other?
By
Mignon Fogarty,
Grammar Girl
September 21, 2016
Anabell asks, "It is correct or incorrect to say 'anyways' to someone? As in 'Anyways, call me later!' 'Anyways' sounds like nails on a chalkboard to me."
The correct word is anyway, which is probably why the sound of anyways bothers you so much. Here are two examples of anyway being used correctly:
Anyway, call me later.
In that sentence, it’s being used to mean something like “getting back to what we were talking about” or maybe “regardless of what we just said.”Here’s another example, where anyway means something like “regardless.”
Squiggly hated cooking, but Aardvark signed him up for classes anyway. Why Do People Still Say ‘Anyways’?
You might be wondering why you still see anyways spoken and written if it’s wrong. Even though the word is now widely considered an error, it’s not new. The Oxford English Dictionary has citations going back as far as the 1200s. Today, they say it’s considered part of some American dialects. So it’s not so much that it’s wrong like a simple misspelling of bureaucrat is wrong (which, unfortunately, I do all the time), but it’s wrong like you wouldn’t want to use it in a job application or a school essay, but it’s also common in some regions or communities.
According to Google’s Ngram Viewer, which is a decent measure of how often words appear in edited text, mostly books, there has been a steady rise in the use of anyways since the 1960s, even in edited text. However, anyway is still vastly more common. In fact, you can’t even see that the use of anyways is rising until you remove anyway from the chart because it’s so much more popular that it swamps out the instances of anyways:
‘Anyways’ or ‘Any Way’?
What about any way? When should you use any way and how does it differ from anyway? In the two-word phrase, the noun way is being modified by the adjective any. Here’s an example of a sentence where you’d use the two-word version:
Is there any way you could call me later?
Notice how you could substitute another adjective, like some, in that sentence.
You could say,
Is there any way you could call me later?
But you could also say, Doing that test—can you substitute a different adjective?—can help you figure out whether you want the one-word version of anyway, or the two words: any and way.
The Adverb ‘Anyway’ Used to End With S And the two-word any way leads us to another interesting point. You may have heard that anyway can’t take an S because it’s an adverb, but that’s just not true. It’s easy to think of examples that prove it wrong. For example, the adverbs forwards and backwards are standard in British English (even though we use forward and backward in American English). Always is another adverb that ends with S, and I bet you didn’t know that the adverb always was originally two words: all and ways.
The Motivated Grammar blog explains that anyway is just like the adverbs always and sometimes, which also started out as two words: some and times. Long ago, English had more words that were something called the adverbial genitive, and some of them—like always, sometimes, and anyways—took an S. But because English isn’t consistent or predictable, always and sometimes kept their S and anyway lost it, at least as far as for what people want you to use in Standard English today. But knowing where anyways comes from maybe helps explain why it keeps showing up and sounds normal to some people.
That’s some interesting history I didn’t expect to find when I started researching this topic, but your quick and dirty tip is still to use anyway, and not anyways, if you want to be safely considered educated and to not have your words sound like nails on a chalkboard to people like Anabell. Thanks for the question!

Inside the effort to save the world's most endangered marine mammal, the vaquita
VIDEO – SAVING A SPECIES
As the sun crept above the horizon, CBS News' Don Dahler headed out in the Gulf of California with a disparate group of volunteers, veterinarians and marine biologists on a difficult -- some would say impossible -- mission to track the rarest of marine mammals: the vaquita, a species of porpoise. It's a mission two years in the making.
"This is bigger than vaquita. For conservation in general, for marine mammals, this is a big thing," said Lorenzo Rojas-Bracho who is directing the effort.
It's been an uphill battle against the odds, the cost -- now in the $5 million range -- and the elements. The challenge is amplified by the fact that there are so few of the diminutive porpoises left. Recent reports show the vaquita population has dropped from almost 600 in 1997 to just 30 today, found only in the Gulf of California.

Vaquitas are getting stuck in nets intended for tatoaba fish, which can sell for up to $10,000 on the Chinese black market. CBS NEWS
The vaquita's rapid decline is an unintended consequence of the increasing demand for tatoaba, a type of fish that can fetch up to $10,000 each on the Chinese black market. Their swim bladder is believed to boost fertility.
"Basically the mesh size is the same size of a vaquita head, so they easily get entangled," Rojas-Bracho explained.
Thus, the desperate rush to save some for captive breeding before they're all gone. The operation requires delicate coordination. Spotter boats search the water for fins. When one or more porpoise is sighted, trained U.S. Navy dolphins act as herd dogs, moving the porpoises into position for the capture boats to net them. They're then carefully transferred onto a transport boat.
Their first stop? A specially constructed marine hospital for medical assessment. Then, a short trip to the vaquita's new home, a large retrofitted sea pen once used as a tourist aquarium that was towed there – nearly 2,000 miles from the Pacific.

Sea pen where they take the vaquitas for captive breeding CBS NEWS
The complicated plan worked, at first. On day two of the project, they captured one for the first time ever. But that six-month-old female was just too stressed from the experience. They had to let her go.
The team took to the sea to try again, and again and again.
But all the effort and expense and frustration is also to bring the issue of illegal gillnets to the public's attention.
"If we can absolutely ensure that these underwater gillnets are not in a place where the remaining animals are, they would survive," one scientist explained. "They just need a chance."

WHAT IS GILL NETTING?
Gillnetting
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gillnetting is a common fishing method used by commercial and artisanal fishermen of all the oceans and in some freshwater and estuary areas. Gill nets are vertical panels of netting normally set in a straight line. Fish may be caught by gill nets in three ways :
wedged – held by the mesh around the body
gilled – held by mesh slipping behind the opercula,
tangled – held by teeth, spines, maxillaries, or other protrusions without the body penetrating the mesh.

Mexico bans gill nets to save endangered porpoise
By Amy La Porte, CNN

VIDEO – BY SEA SHEPHERD SOCIETY
PHOTOGRAPH -- The number of vaquita porpoises is down to 30, experts estimate.
(CNN)After years of pressure on the Mexican government, a permanent ban on gillnet fishing has gone into effect in a bid to save a critically endangered species of porpoise.
Experts estimate there are 30 vaquita porpoises remaining, and all of them live exclusively in the waters of the Gulf of California.
Banning the killer
The now banned nets, known as gill nets, are designed to catch the giant totoaba fish, whose swim bladder is considered a delicacy in China and sold for more than $4,500 per pound.
The similar size of the two species means gill nets invariably ensnare the endangered porpoises as well.
A vaquita trapped and killed in a gill net.
The World Wildlife Fund released a statement praising the Mexican government's decision to move beyond a temporary ban.
"This is a fantastic and encouraging step forward in the path to saving the vaquita, provided the ban is fully enforced and accompanied by fishing alternatives for local communities," the statement said.
Dolphin saviors?
A breeding program was also announced by the Mexican government and could involve the use of US Navy-trained dolphins.
"Vaquitas will be located using boats, and, at the request of the Mexican government, will receive help from US Navy Marine Mammal Program," according to the National Marine Mammal Foundation.
The US Navy may use dolphins to help.
The idea is to have the dolphins use echolocation to find the last remaining vaquita porpoises and then corral them into a safe breeding ground.
CNN has reached out to the US Navy but it is yet to confirm the program.
The WWF says it is wary of any program that removes the porpoises from their natural habitat.
"Any effort to capture and provide sanctuary for the remaining vaquita and breed them in captivity must be explicitly linked to a plan to return vaquita to the wild once their habitat is secure," it said.
Hollywood champions
The gill net ban is part of an agreement between the foundations of actor Leonardo DiCaprio and businessman Carlos Slim, and the Mexican government.
DiCaprio posted his support for the new measures on Instagram, saying, "Great news and a huge step forward as the permanent ban on gill nets has been made official. Thank you to all who helped make this happen, including President (Enrique) Peña Nieto."
In the past, DiCaprio used Twitter and Instagram to get his millions of followers to sign a petition demanding Mexico's President take immediate action.

Sanders Faces Rebuke Over Refusal to Support Abolishing ICE

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) is facing rebuke from progressive activists and the far left of the Democratic Party for declining to call for the abolishment of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Earlier this week during an appearance on CNN's "State of the Union" with Jake Tapper, Sanders was asked whether he supported abolishing ICE, the federal agency responsible for preventing cross-border crime and illegal immigration.
The senator was conspicuously ambiguous in his answer, refusing to call for abolition and expressing general support for "a national program" to "deal with immigration in a rational way."
"I think that what we need is to create policies which deal with immigration in a rational way," Sanders said. "What we need is Trump to sit down with members of Congress and work on a national program which deals with this serious issue."
Sanders' views did not seem to sit well with a younger generation of progressive activists and liberals, who are increasingly in favor of unmitigated restrictions on immigration.
Jeremey Scahill, a journalist who alongside Glen Greenwald founded The Intercept—a liberal-leaning online publication—in 2014, perhaps best summed up the growing sentiment on the left. The journalist took to social media shortly after the interview was broadcast to lambast the 76-year-old senator for having chosen to stand on the "wrong side of history."
"Then Sanders is choosing to be on the wrong side of history on this issue," Scahill tweeted. "ICE was created under Bush-Cheney and has done what they wanted it to do, particularly under Trump. It can’t be reformed."

Sanders' deviation from progressive orthodoxy on abolishing ICE underscores the senator's long-held views on immigration, which hampered his 2016 presidential campaign.
The senator has generally been supportive of extending the Obama-era Deferred Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which granted legal protections to nearly 800,000 illegal immigrants brought to the U.S. as children, and a pathway to citizenship.
Sanders, however, has also expressed support for decreasing immigration overall, arguing that "bringing in significant numbers of unskilled" migrants only serves to "depress wages" for American workers.
His voting record has generally been in line with such sentiments.
In 2007, Sanders voted against an immigration reform measure championed by the late Sen. Ted Kennedy (D., Mass.) on the grounds that the legislation would increase the number of guest workers allowed to come and remain in the country.
In 2013, Sanders voted in favor of the "Gang of Eight" immigration reform proposal, which would have created a pathway for illegal immigrants to gain legal status and eventually citizenship. The bill also beefed up border security by adding up to 40,000 new border patrol agents and building 700 miles of supplementary fencing to prevent illegal crossings. The legislation, which passed the Senate but ultimately failed to receive consideration in the House, would have also ended the diversity visa lottery system.

PITTSBURGH -- During a downtown rally Thursday for Antwon Rose Jr., the teen killed by East Pittsburgh police late Tuesday, a poem written by Antwon was read, reports CBS Pittsburgh.
The Woodlands Hills School District released it.
"His mom, Michelle Kenny, wants everyone to have it," Superintendent Licia Lentz said in a message.
Rose reportedly wrote the poem two years ago during a 10th grade Honors English class at Woodland Hills High School.
The poem, titled, "I AM NOT WHAT YOU THINK!" describes Rose's fear of violence in his community.
One line reads, "I see mothers bury their sons; I want my mom to never feel that pain."
The 17-year-old was shot and killed by an East Pittsburgh police officer as he ran from a car that officers had stopped.
The officer fired three shots at Rose, hitting him in the back and killing him.

(REUTERS) - A Pennsylvania police officer is under investigation after he was caught on video using a stun gun on an unarmed black man who was sitting on a curb.
The video https://www.facebook.com/100019434198312/videos/190038081653997 was captured by a bystander on Thursday in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and posted on Facebook. It has since received 2.4 million views and is the latest incident to spark a public outcry in the United States over excessive use of force by police against black men.
Lancaster Mayor Danene Sorace said in a statement https://www.facebook.com/CityOfLancasterPA she was "upset" by the images and an investigation was underway into the use of force in the incident.
Police stopped the man, Sean D. Williams, 27, on Thursday while responding to a 911 call about a man with a baseball bat who had pursued another person, according to a report from the police bureau https://lancaster.crimewatchpa.com/lbop/19659/arrests/williams-sean-d-criminal-warrant-possession-controlled-substance-pcp-and-public.
The video shows Williams sitting on a curb, being repeatedly asked to straighten his legs by Lancaster City Police Bureau Officer Philip Bernot.
Williams begins to follow the white officer's directions then folds his legs up under himself again, at which point Bernot fires his stun gun and Williams writhes around in pain.
Lancaster police said the stun gun, widely referred to as a Taser due to its brand name, was used because Williams failed to follow instructions.

JUDGE JONAS LEGUM, WHO CALLED HIS BEHAVIOR "RATHER BIZARRE," SUSPENDED THE JAIL SENTENCE BUT PLACED HIM ON PROBATION AND ORDERED HIM TO CONTINUE THERAPY.” POLICEMEN AND JUDGES SHOULD NOT MAKE PSYCHIATRIC DIAGNOSES AND ACT ON THEM. ALSO, IF SOMEONE IS THIS BIZARRE, THE TERM “RATHER” DOESN’T ACCURATELY DESCRIBE HIM, AND BELIES THE DANGER THAT HE MAY POSE. HE SHOULD START OUT IN A PSYCHIATRIC WARD IMMEDIATELY, AND THEN AFTER A WEEK OR SO OF OBSERVATION, LET THE DOCTORS THERE SAY WHAT SHOULD BE DONE WITH HIM. THEN SEND HIM TO COURT AND PERHAPS TO PRISON OR AN ASYLUM.

Controversial author Milo Yiannopoulos is dropping his lawsuit against his former publisher
Trevor Hughes, USA TODAY Published 9:57 p.m. ET June 28, 2018 | Updated 10:13 p.m. ET June 28, 2018
The man accused of killing five people at a Maryland newspaper had an ongoing grudge with the publication and brought smoke grenades and a shotgun in a "targeted" attack meant to kill people, police said Thursday night.
Police did not officially release the name of the man they took into custody following the shooting at the Capital Gazette in Annapolis. But a law enforcement source who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not allowed to discuss the case publicly identified the suspect as Jarrod Ramos, 38, of Laurel, Maryland.
"He had some type of conflict with the paper in general," said Lt. Ryan Frashure, an Anne Arundel County Police spokesman.
Court papers show that Ramos had filed a defamation suit against the newspaper in 2012. But a judge threw out the lawsuit and said Ramos "fails to come close to alleging a case of defamation." A Maryland appeals court further concluded that everything printed in the July 31, 2011 newspaper story about Ramos appeared to be true.
According to the court case, Ramos had pleaded guilty on July 26, 2011 in Anne Arundel County on a charge of criminal harassment and got a 90-day suspended jail sentence. Five days later, the Capital ran a story by staff writer Eric Thomas Hartley under the headline "Jarrod wants to be your friend."
The story described a harrowing situation of a woman who was continually harassed by Ramos after he contacted her on Facebook.
"If you're on Facebook, you've probably gotten a friend request or message from an old high school classmate you didn't quite remember," Hartley wrote in the story. "For one woman, that experience turned into a yearlong nightmare."
The story said Ramos "out of the blue" had contacted her and thanked her for being the only person ever to be nice to him at Arundel High school. But the renewed friendship turned sour quickly after Ramos turned on her, the story said.

"That sparked months of emails in which Ramos alternately asked for help, called her vulgar names and told her to kill herself," according to the story, which was part of the court record filed in the case. "He emailed her company and tried to get her fired."
The woman eventually called police and Ramos, identified in court papers as a federal employee, was charged with misdemeanor harassment. Judge Jonas Legum, who called his behavior "rather bizarre," suspended the jail sentence but placed him on probation and ordered him to continue therapy.

The newspaper concluded at the time that "The case is extreme. But it provides a frightening look at the false intimacy the Internet can offer and the venom that can hide behind a computer screen."
That venom, according to police, manifested itself in Thursday's deadly attack in the Capital newsroom.
"This was a targeted attack on the Capital Gazette," said Anne Arundel County Deputy Police Chief William Krampf. "This person was prepared to shoot people. His intent was to cause harm."
The suspect surrendered to police when confronted. County Executive Steve Schuh said the suspect had put his gun down and was hiding under a desk when police found him. Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley said he was told the suspect "wasn't a very a cooperative witness when they took him into custody."
NOW THIS IS A REAL POSSIBILITY GIVEN TODAY’S SITUATION, BUT I WOULDN’T SAY IT’S “GOING TO HAPPEN.” POLITICAL SITUATIONS ARE USUALLY FLUID. HOWEVER, I FIRST STARTED NOTICING THE “MILITIAS” SOME 10 YEARS AGO, AND I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN WORRIED ABOUT THEM. I AM ALSO CONCERNED ABOUT THE ULTRA-CONSERVATIVE POSITION OF THOSE WHO PROUDLY CALL THEMSELVES “CONSERVATIVE.” I WILL AGAIN SAY, AS I HAVE NUMEROUS TIMES, BEING RADICAL RIGHTIST IS NO MORE “CONSERVATIVE” THAN IS BEING A COMMUNIST, ANARCHIST, OR ANY OTHER REVOLUTIONARY PERSON.
WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE THEY WERE DESCRIBED AS BEING “REACTIONARY,” THE OPPOSITE POLE ON A COMPARATIVE LISTING OF POLITICAL POSITIONS. THIS IDEA OF A NEW CIVIL WAR WHICH TWO RADICAL RIGHTISTS IN TWO DIFFERENT NEWS ARTICLES HAVE SPOKEN OF AS “THE RACE WAR,” WITH SEEMINGLY GREAT AND JOYOUS EXPECTATION. IT NAUSEATES ME, BUT I BELIEVE THAT, YES, THERE ARE FOLKS OUT THERE WHO ARE DELIGHTEDLY LOOKING FORWARD TO A BLOODY WAR AMONG THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.
I POST POLITICAL ARTICLES THAT I THINK ARE IMPORTANT ISSUES ON MY FACEBOOK PAGE, AND HAVE A FEW TIMES MADE POINTED COMMENTS. I DON’T HIDE THE FACT THAT I’M A BERNIE SANDERS PROGRESSIVE, AND THAT I BELIEVE IN FULL INTEGRATION BY RACE, RELIGION, CULTURAL BACKGROUND, SEXUAL ORIENTATION, ETC. IN A HUMAN SOCIETY. ONE GUY POSTED BENEATH MY COMMENT, “YOU ARE A RACE TRAITOR.” I HAD NEVER HEARD OF A “RACE TRAITOR.”
I THINK THAT MAY BE NEW TERMINOLOGY WITH THIS GENERATION OF RACISTS WHO ARE ACTIVE ON THE WEB. OF COURSE, WHEN WE SEE SOMETHING LIKE THAT, THERE’S NO WAY TO BE ABSOLUTELY SURE WHO THEY REALLY ARE, AND THE RUSSIANS HAVE BEEN BLAMED FOR A LOT OF THAT. THEY, IN OTHER WORDS, AREN’T EVEN REAL “PEOPLE” AT ALL. WHAT CONCERNS ME MOST IS NOT JUST THAT THEY “THINK” THERE DEFINITELY “WILL BE,” RATHER THAN “MAY BE” A RACE WAR, AND HEAVEN KNOWS, EVERYBODY LOVES A GOOD RACE WAR!!
SOME OF THE WHITE NATIONALISTS HAVE POSTULATED A “WHITE NATION” ON THE WEST COAST, DURING THE LAST SIX MONTHS OR SO, SPECIFICALLY CENTERED AROUND PORTLAND OREGON AS THEIR CAPITAL. THERE’S APPARENTLY SOMETHING THEY REALLY LOVE ABOUT PORTLAND. WHEN I SEE THIS KIND OF THING, I THINK “WHO THE HECK ARE THESE PEOPLE, AND HOW DO THEY FIND EACH OTHER? IT’S PROBABLY ON THE NET, OF COURSE, BUT HOW WELL-ORGANIZED ARE THEY? I DO BELIEVE THEM TO BE SERIOUS ABOUT THIS KIND OF TALK, BECAUSE THOSE VERY HOSTILE INDIVIDUALS HAVE BEEN EMERGING OUT FROM UNDER THEIR PRIVATE ROCKS AND INTO THE DAYLIGHT SINCE THE IMPROBABLE CREW WHO CALL THEMSELVES THE TEA PARTY POPPED UP WITH THEIR REALLY SPOOKY-LOOKING “TINFOIL HATS,” SOMETIME IN THE RANGE OF 5 YEARS AGO.
I HATE TO SAY IT, BUT WE NEED TO PROBE MUCH MORE DEEPLY INTO THE WHITE RADICAL GROUPS THAN WE HAVE SO FAR. THEY INCLUDE SOME SERIOUS PSYCHIATRIC CASES. AND WHY HAVEN’T OUR SENATE AND HOUSE DONE THAT? BECAUSE TOO MANY WHITES AGREE WITH THEM IN THEIR IDEAS, AND MAYBE EVEN THEIR GOALS. GO TO SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW CENTER FOR INFORMATION ON WHAT DANGEROUSLY RADICAL GROUPS ARE KNOWN, AND HOW POWERFUL THEY ARE. IT’S FRANKLY FRIGHTENING.

Poll: Almost a third of US voters think a second civil war is coming soon
Ryan W. Miller, USA TODAY Published 11:09 p.m. ET June 27, 2018
A war may be brewing within the United States, almost a third of voters say in a poll released Wednesday.
Amid widespread political polarization on issues like immigration and recent public confrontations of Trump administration officials, 31 percent of probable U.S. voters surveyed said they think "it's likely that the United States will experience a second civil war sometime in the next five years."
Democrats at 37 percent were slightly more fearful of a second civil war than Republicans at 32 percent, the poll from Rasmussen Reports found.
While more than half thought it was unlikely the USA would see a second civil war soon, 59 percent of voters were still concerned that opponents of President Donald Trump's policies would resort to violence.
During former President Barack Obama's second year in office, a similar 53% of voters thought those who did not support his policies would turn to violence, according to Rasmussen.
Wednesday's poll also found 53 percent of voters were worried that those critical of the news media's Trump coverage would become violent.

The poll comes as the Trump administration faces harsh backlash over a "zero tolerance" immigration policy that separated more than 2,000 children from their parents who stand accused of entering the United States illegally. Trump signed an executive order last week that aimed to end family separations while maintaining a his strict policy of criminally prosecuting immigrants crossing the border illegally.
Trump administration officials, including White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and White House adviser Stephen Miller, have faced public confrontation from political opponents protesting the immigration policy and others.
The survey by Rasmussen Reports polled 1,000 likely U.S. voters from June 21 to June 24 with a sampling error of 3 percentage points.

THE HUMAN RESPONSIBILITY TO TAKE BASIC CARE OF CHILDREN HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH “WHOSE CHILDREN” THEY ARE. DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS REALLY DO THINK IN A RADICALLY DIFFERENT WAY MANY TIMES ON THE SAME ISSUES. 'Fox & Friends' host Brian Kilmeade on border separations: 'These aren't our kids'
Ryan Miller, USA TODAY Published 5:20 p.m. ET June 22, 2018
"Fox & Friends" co-host Brian Kilmeade defended President Donald Trump's "zero tolerance" immigration policy Friday morning and said "these aren't our kids" when referring to migrant children being separated from their parents.
"We just can't let everybody in that wants to be here. And these are not — like it or not, these aren't our kids. Show them compassion, but it's not like he's doing this to the people of Idaho or Texas. These are people from another country," Kilmeade said.
Kilmeade claimed that regardless of who were in office, the president would have to address an influx of illegal immigrants trying to enter the United States.
However, as USA TODAY reported in May, the Border Patrol was on pace to catch 363,000 people trying to illegally cross the border in fiscal year 2018, which is lower than the total in seven out of the last 10 years, and far below the peak during the 2000s.

Kilmeade later addressed comments on his Fox News Radio show.
"All kids are important. All kids are special. What I'm just trying to say: In this country, when they come in, that as the president of the United States, you can only do so much for so many," Kilmeade said later.
"I didn’t mean to make it seem like children coming into the U.S. illegally are less important because they live in another country," Kilmeade added on Twitter.
Trump's "zero tolerance" policy — to prosecute criminally all immigrants entering the country illegally — separated more than 2,000 children from their parents at the U.S-Mexico border from April through May. Trump signed an executive order Wednesday that aims to end the separations but continue the "zero tolerance" policy.

CBS News interview with ICE whistleblower interrupted by surprise visit from government agents
Our interview with former Immigration And Customs Enforcement (ICE) spokesperson James Schwab was interrupted by a surprise visit from government agents. Our report ➡️ https://cbsn.ws/2Kv1Qbi (via CBS This Morning)
Posted by CBS News on Thursday, June 28, 2018
James Schwab was sitting in front of a camera inside his San Francisco Bay-area home, explaining to a reporter why he abruptly quit his job as a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman three months ago.
He could not “fathom” continuing to work for an agency that lies to the public, he told CBS News reporter Jamie Yuccas on Wednesday.
He acknowledged spinning public statements; it is what people in those positions do. But knowingly spreading lies — that he could not stomach, he told Yuccas. So he quit, citing “false” and “misleading” statements made by Attorney General Jeff Sessions and ICE acting director Thomas D. Homan.
His resignation in March made headlines. And then Schwab essentially went quiet before finally sitting down with CBS.
About 15 minutes into the interview Wednesday in San Jose, Schwab and the others heard knocks that quickly grew louder. Schwab’s husband went downstairs to check who it was. Minutes later, a CBS crew member overheard that the visitors were from the Department of Homeland Security, the agency that oversees ICE.
Schwab went down to talk to them, according to Yuccas.
“We hear Mr. Schwab ask three times, ‘What is this about?’ … They will not answer his questions. They just keep saying, ‘We’d like to talk to you,’ ” Yuccas told The Washington Post on Thursday.
Yuccas said officials identified themselves as agents from the DHS Office of Inspector General — an oversight division that investigates possible wrongdoing within the agency. From upstairs, Yuccas heard that the officials wanted to talk to Schwab about leaks involving Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf.
Months earlier, when Schwab was still working as spokesman for ICE’s San Francisco office, Schaaf warned Bay Area residents about an upcoming ICE raid, triggering an angry response from President Trump, Sessions and Homan.
After hearing Schaaf’s name, Yuccas went to the door with a photographer, introducing herself as a CBS reporter. Their camera was rolling.

Standing outside Schwab’s door were two unidentified men in black suits. CBS captured the brief exchange between Yuccas and one of the men, who was carrying a folder, as the other government official and Schwab stood quietly.
“We can’t speak with you,” the agent said.
“Why are you guys here?” Yuccas asked.
“I can’t speak with you about that,” he replied.
The agent then asked Schwab to call him later. Yuccas tried to squeeze in another question, asking: “Is this about the incident … ”
“Please don’t interrupt,” the agent said, again asking Schwab to call him.
“We’re in his home,” Yuccas said.
The agent responded: “I’m talking to him. This is confidential, okay?”
Yuccas said Schwab told the officials before they left that he would talk to them at a later date but would consult with his attorney first.
The surprise visit, Yuccas said, left Schwab suspecting that he could be under investigation for possibly leaking information to Schaaf who, on Feb. 24, announced that she learned “from multiple credible sources” that ICE was preparing to conduct raids throughout the Bay Area. The raids happened the following day.
Homan, the acting ICE director, called Schaaf’s actions “irresponsible” and said in a Feb. 27 statement that 864 “criminal aliens and public safety threats remain at large.” He said that he believed “some of them” had managed to avoid arrest after being tipped off by Schaaf.
[Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf tipped off immigrants about ICE raid and isn’t sorry she did]
Schwab, who helped craft that statement, said he felt uncomfortable with the agency’s claim that more than 800 “criminal aliens” escaped capture. He told CBS that the statement was a “flat-out lie” and had told media outlets that ICE arrested 232 suspected undocumented immigrants — a higher number than what federal authorities had expected.
Schwab resigned less than two weeks after the Feb. 25 raid, telling the San Francisco Chronicle at the time he quit because he “didn’t want to perpetuate misleading facts.”
ICE officials said in March that Schwab’s statements to media outlets about ICE arrests in California were inaccurate.
Three months later, and after the visit to his home, on camera, by DHS agents, Schwab told CBS that he was “completely shocked” the agents had showed up at his doorstep unannounced.
He said he believed the visit was an intimidation tactic.
“Why, three months later, are we doing this?” he told CBS News. He added: “And this is why people won’t come out and speak against the government.”
The DHS Office of Inspector General did not respond to questions about why the officials showed up at Schwab’s home or whether he was being investigated for leaking.
The Washington Post was unable to reach Schwab.
Schwab told CBS that he had never met Schaaf, let alone talked to her, and that he would never leak anything.
“But they were very serious … very stern with me,” he said. “It was concerning.”
Yuccas said the unexpected visit clearly rattled the former ICE spokesman.
“I can tell you that Mr. Schwab seemed very confused as to why they were at his house,” Yuccas said. Recalling conversations with Schwab, she said that “in the three months since he left, no one has come to his home. … No one has called him indicating anything about a leak through the mayor’s office.”
Yuccas said she does not know for certain if the agents showed up knowing that journalists were at Schwab’s home — the crew’s TV van was parked and clearly visible outside — or if the visit was simply a coincidence.
“When they saw the camera, I can’t tell if it was that they didn’t know or if they were just agitated that the camera was there,” Yuccas said.

I BELIEVE THAT THIS SENTENCE SUMS UP HILLARY’S CENTRAL PROBLEM. “WHILE HILLARY CLINTON WAS THE FACE OF THE ESTABLISHMENT IN MANY WAYS, SHE ALSO WOULD HAVE BECOME THE FIRST FEMALE PRESIDENT IF SHE HAD BEEN ELECTED.” FOR ME, SHE WAS “THE FACE OF THE ESTABLISHMENT” INDEED, AND THE FACT THAT SHE IS FEMALE IS NOT ENOUGH FOR ME. I WISH HER WELL, BUT I CAN’T VOTE FOR HER OVER BERNIE SANDERS OR ALMOST ANY OTHER “REAL DEMOCRAT.”
THIS ARTICLE IS INTERESTING FOR INTRODUCING SOME MORE NEW NAMES TO ME, AND AFTER THE INFURIATING EVENTS OF 2016, THIS WRITER IS RIGHT. I WANT “NEW BLOOD,” AND BOLD GOALS AND OPINIONS. FOR 2020, I STILL WANT BERNIE SANDERS. AFTER THAT, I’LL KNOW BY THEN WHO ELSE REALLY APPEALS TO ME. I WANT THE SANDERS ECONOMIC PACKAGE, HIS “HUMAN TOUCH,” AND HIS PRINCIPLED VIEW OF POLITICS.
I THINK THAT’S THE SINGLE WORST THING ABOUT OUR COUNTRY FOR THE NON-WEALTHY TO SURVIVE AND THRIVE IN THE CONSTANT SWING BETWEEN POVERTY AND COMFORT. IT’S TOO DIFFICULT FOR MANY OF US TO GET A LITTLE BIT AHEAD OF THE GAME AND RELAX. IF WE HAVE ENOUGH, WE CAN HAVE SOME PLEASURES AND GIVE TO CHARITY. IF WE DON’T WE CAN PRACTICE THE SCOTTISH VIRTUES OF THRIFT AND CREATIVITY.
THE SECOND WORST THING ABOUT THE USA TODAY, THOUGH, IS DEFINITELY THE CLASS/RACE DIVIDES. I PERSONALLY BELIEVE, THOUGH IT DISCOURAGES ME, THAT FEAR OR SIMPLY LACK OF FAMILIARITY WITH “THE OTHER” IS BUILT INTO THE HUMAN PSYCHOLOGICAL MAKEUP. HUMANS ARE CREATIVE, ENERGETIC, SPIRITUAL, LOVING, BUT ALSO WARLIKE. FIRST, WE MAKE LOVE, THEN WE MAKE WAR.

Anti-establishment fervor grips Dems
BY AMIE PARNES - 06/29/18 06:02 AM EDT
The public debate for Democrats has centered around whether the party is drifting to the left.
But on the heels of Rep. Joseph Crowley’s (D-N.Y.) upset primary loss to 28-year-old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the real battle is looking more like a fight between establishment and anti-establishment forces.
“I think it’s less about left-right and more about new-old,” said Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), who defeated a Democratic incumbent to win his seat in Congress in 2016.
Khanna was a player in the Crowley battle with Ocasio-Cortez. He backed Ocasio-Cortez, though in a move that’s won him some criticism, he also endorsed Crowley.
“To me, it's about anti-establishment, it’s about let’s have new voices in there, it’s about a sense of a failed generation of congressional leadership. I think that’s really the sentiment,” he said.
Ocasio-Cortez wasn’t the only anti-establishment winner on Tuesday night.
In Maryland, former NAACP President Ben Jealous defeated Prince George County Executive Rushern Baker, who was backed by the state’s political establishment.
Both Jealous and Ocasio-Cortez were supported by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who ran his own anti-establishment race in 2016 Democratic presidential primary against Hillary Clinton. While Sanders and his allies have suffered some losses in primaries this year, the victories on Tuesday night were huge for his movement.
They might also give some signals about how the 2020 race for the Democratic nomination will proceed.
Several possible candidates could look to grab the anti-establishment mantle, from Sanders to Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who a few years ago was an unknown professor criticizing corruption in Washington, to freshman Sen. Kamala Harris, a relative upstart from California.
“If I was a Democrat running for president in 2020, I would take good notes on what happened in New York and Maryland,” said Brad Bannon, a Democratic strategist. “People are sick and tired of what’s happening in Washington. They want change. They want something entirely different.”
David Wade, a Democratic strategist who served as a top aide to former Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), noted that Democrats have often nominated some kind of outsider, from Jimmy Carter to Bill Clinton to Barack Obama.
“From Kennedy to Carter to Clinton '92 all the way through Obama, we tend to choose the most different, most outside force in the field,” said Wade.
While Hillary Clinton was the face of the establishment in many ways, she also would have become the first female president if she had been elected.
Wade said she represented a “historic choice even if Sanders was the more anti-establishment candidate.”
And putting aside 2016, Wade said the “demand for someone who can shake up Washington is stronger today than ever.”

BY THE HILL
Democratic strategist Basil Smikle, however, said the party’s current affinity for anti-establishment candidates is more about the push for new ideas.
“There’s a huge appetite for a candidate that pushes big, aspirational ideas and not someone preoccupied with shaping public policy within the constraints of their office,” said Smikle, who worked for Clinton. “Radical change over incrementalism.”
The demand for new faces is most pronounced in the House, where Ocasio-Cortez won a victory over a 10-term incumbent in Crowley. The top three leaders in the House have held their leadership positions for more than a decade, frustrating up and coming lawmakers.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) joked this week that she’s a liberal and a woman.
“What’s your problem? Two out of three ain’t bad,” the 78-year-old leader said.
Smikel said he doesn’t think the tensions are about age. In fact, he thinks some older candidates would do well mimicking Ocasio-Cortez’s closing advertisement focused on helping the working-class voters of her district.
“There are even older, well-known potential candidates who could’ve spoken about 80 percent of Ocasio-Cortez’s closing ad, and I don’t just mean Bernie,” he said.
Pelosi pushed back Wednesday against the notion that the party is wrestling with an overall identity crisis.
“I don’t accept any characterization of our party presented by the Republicans,” Pelosi said. “Our party is a big tent. Each of our members is elected to be an independent representative of their district. The beauty is in the mix.”
Pelosi said she and other party leaders are “excited about another generation of people coming into the Congress.”
Republicans — seizing what they see as an opportunity — predict the jolt in direction will be too much for Democrats.
“As the anti-establishment backlash to 2016 unfolds, the race to the left has been steady but incremental among potential 2020ers like Cory Booker and Kirsten Gillibrand,” said Alexandra Smith, the executive director of America Rising. “Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez proudly and unabashedly rips that band-aid off. If Democratic donors were nervous about Elizabeth Warren, this potential new direction should terrify them.”
There are also some signs that for all the talk about an anti-establishment insurgency, the Democratic establishment is alive and well.
Former Vice President Joe Biden is ahead in most 2020 polls, though that may reflect his strong name recognition.
Julian Zelizer, a professor of history and public affairs at Princeton University, said that means there are Democrats who are okay with establishment candidates.
“Some Democrats think the party is just fine and a well-orchestrated ... others see the lesson of 2016 as being that there is something fundamentally wrong with the party,” Zelizer said. “This wing wants youth, energy, and progressive ideas injected into the party through exciting candidates.
“They want someone very different than Trump and are much more concerned with ideas and policies that the Trumpinistas, but the common impetus is that they feel the party system is old and broken,” he continued.
Democratic Pollster Celinda Lake added that 2020 will be complicated because “it will be balanced by the desire for new faces and the desire to beat Donald Trump period. But one thing is clear, nobody is going to be nominated on the Democratic side who is not for gun control, marriage equality, who doesn’t want to regulate Wall Street.”
Khanna said that the new crop of Democrats was inevitable.
“The question is, is that in two years or four years,” he said, adding, “There is hunger for generational change.”

Right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos recently told at least two news outlets that he wanted vigilantes to start shooting journalists, but he insisted Thursday that he did so to taunt reporters.
"I can't wait for vigilante squads to start gunning journalists down on sight," the author and agitator told a reporter for the New York Observer over a text message. The news outlet, which wrote about the incident this week, was working on a feature story about a New York City restaurant that Yiannopoulos reportedly frequents.
Yiannopoulos, when asked to elaborate, told the reporter this was his "standard response," according to the Observer.
Yiannopoulos also also [sic] sent a similar message to Will Sommer, a Daily Beast reporter.
On Thursday, a gunman opened fired in an Annapolis, Md., newsroom, killing five people and injuring several others. Authorities have not said what the motive was or who was being targeted.
Yiannopoulos, 33, confirmed in an Instagram post that he wrote the messages about shooting journalists, but that he sent them to the reporters as a way to troll them.
"You're about to see a raft of news stories claiming that I am responsible for inspiring the deaths of journalists," he wrote. "The truth, as always, is the opposite of what the media tells you."
He continued: "I sent a troll about 'vigilante death squads as a private response to a few hostile journalists who were asking me for comment, basically as a way of saying, 'F--- off.' They then published it."
On Twitter, many condemned Yiannopoulos' remarks.
Former National Security Agency contractor and leaker Edward Snowden, who did not specifically name Yiannopoulos, tweeted "to fight words with weapons is more than violence, it is a crime against the Constitution. Those who justify such attacks are no patriots."

Yiannopoulos put the blame on the journalists who wrote about his remarks.
"If there turns out to be any dimension to this crime related to my private, misreported remarks, the responsibility for that lies wholly with the Beast and the Observer for drumming up fake hysteria about a private joke, and with the verified liberals who pretended they thought I was serious," he wrote.
Yiannopoulos once worked for Breitbart News, but resigned last year after podcasts surfaced in which he seemed to condone sex between men and boys. He has since said he does not condone pedophilia.

Antwon Rose's poem about growing up black in America has taken on a life of its own
By Darran Simon, CNN
Updated 9:09 PM ET, Tue June 26, 2018
(CNN)In his teenage mind, Antwon Rose II wrestled with thoughts of hope, fear and uncertainty about growing up black in America.
After a suburban Pittsburgh officer fatally shot the unarmed 17-year-old as he ran from police last week, his family released a poem Antwon had written that showed the range of emotions he felt. He titled it, "I Am Not What You Think!"
"I see mothers bury their sons / I want my mom to never feel that pain"
The program at Antwon Rose II's funeral featured images of him, an obituary and a poem he wrote.
Antwon's mother, Michelle Kenney, said her son's poem is "not just a poem."
"That is the life of many, many young African-American males. It was just that my son wrote it down and he lost his life," Kenney said in an exclusive interview that aired Monday on "Good Morning America."
A young activist, not much older than Antwon, has recited the poem at the protests that followed Antwon's death, reciting verses that linger in the air.
"I understand people believe I'm just a statistic / I say to them I'm different"
At his funeral on Monday, two of Antwon's close friends read the poem, which was printed on the funeral program.
The story of how the poem took on a life of its own after Antwon's death begins with his old English teacher.
Antwon Rose II
'His mom's going to want this'
For two years, the poem lived on Laura Arthrell's electronic grade book, largely forgotten. It was part of a final assignment she gave to her 10th grade honors English students, challenging them to write about a topic more important than themselves.
On the night of Antwon's death, she saw a video of the shooting that was posted on Facebook. The next day she learned the victim was her former student, a goof with an amazing smile.
"That will never leave my head," she said of the video.
Arthrell couldn't remember what he had written about in 2016, and searched for the poem.
It gave her chills when she read it last Thursday.
"A lot of kids, if they don't succeed, end up dead or in jail, in spite of everything everybody does for them," she said.
Arthrell liked that the title of Antwon's poem spoke of hope and defying expectations.
"I dream of life getting easier / I try my best to make my dream come true"
She knew his voice needed to be heard.
'Beautiful, bright' Antwon Rose remembered during funeral at his former school
She called Licia Lentz, the school district's assistant superintendent, to ask for help getting in touch with Antwon's family.
She read the poem to Lentz on the phone and began to cry.
Arthrell printed 10 copies and set out for Antwon's family's home in Rankin, a borough in Allegheny County, crying along the way.
She thought his family would want more than one copy.
At the family's home, she read the poem aloud in their living room.
"I wanted them to hear the words, and I needed to hear it, to tell you the truth," she said.
She recalled Kenney sobbing.
"God bless that woman. She cried so hard," Arthrell said. "It was like he was talking to her. It was like he was talking to them."
Antwon's family wanted the world to hear the poem next.

'This is reality for people'
Later that day, Christian Carter, the 18-year-old activist who joined a rally in front of the Allegheny County Courthouse in Pittsburgh, received a copy of the poem from someone who knew one of Antwon's sisters.
She asked for it to be read aloud.
Carter, an actor who co-founded a youth-led activist group called Youth Power Collective, scanned it quickly.
Several verses struck him, he said. Among them, the prescient lines: "I see mothers bury their sons/I want my mom to never feel that pain"
As he read it for the first time on the courthouse steps, he could feel the energy in the air.
"It sits with you," said Carter, a recent graduate of the Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts School.
"It shows the reality that black children have to live in every single day," Carter said. "From the day that we are born, we have to watch us die."
The poem gave him a better sense of Antwon, "his character, how smart and aware he was," Carter explained.
"This is reality for people. This is not just us protesting because one of us died. This is us literally demanding that our lives are protected by the people that are there to protect and serve us."

Poland Holocaust law: Government U-turn on jail threat

PHOTOGRAPH -- The Polish law has angered many Holocaust survivors in Israel
When Poland made it a criminal offence this year to accuse it of complicity in Nazi war crimes, there was an outcry in Europe, Israel and the US.
Anyone found guilty could face up to three years in jail.
Five months later, the right-wing prime minister has moved to change the law to decriminalise the offence, describing it as a "correction".
An amendment to the Holocaust law was quickly backed by the lower house of parliament and now moves to the Senate.
The law had been intended to "defend the good name of Poland" but from now on it would be a civil, not a criminal offence, the head of prime minister's office, Michal Dworczyk, told public radio.
When it was signed by Polish President Andzrej Duda in February there were immediate objections, and he then referred the measures to the Constitutional Tribunal, in effect putting the law on hold.

Criticism of Holocaust law grows
Israeli President Reuven Rivlin publicly challenged the legislation in April, telling his counterpart it was undeniable that while many Poles had fought the Nazis in World War Two, "Poland and Poles had a hand in the extermination" of Jews during the Holocaust.
While admitting that Poland was backtracking on the law, the government said it had had the necessary effect so that no-one would any more be able to use the defamatory phrase "Polish death camps" with impunity.
The head of the World Jewish Congress, Ronald Lauder, welcomed the decision, while the World Holocaust Remembrance Centre in Jerusalem, Yad Vashem, said it was a "positive development in the right direction".
What the law said
Poland's Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) law states: "Whoever accuses, publicly and against the facts, the Polish nation, or the Polish state, of being responsible or complicit in the Nazi crimes committed by the Third German Reich… shall be subject to a fine or a penalty of imprisonment of up to three years."
However, a person "is not committing a crime if he or she commits such an act as part of artistic or scientific activities".
Why has Poland backtracked on Holocaust law?
By Adam Easton, BBC News, Warsaw
The legislation was partially inspired to prevent the use of the offensive and inaccurate phrase "Polish death camps" in international media and elsewhere.
During World War Two, Poland suffered brutal occupation by the Nazi and Soviet regimes and more than five million Polish citizens, three million of them Jews, died. The Germans conceived and operated the camps in what was then Nazi-occupied Poland.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told parliament the government had to take into account the international response to the law
The law explicitly referred to complicity in Nazi crimes by the Polish nation or state.
Poland's Law and Justice government, while acknowledging that individual Poles took part in crimes against their Jewish neighbours, argued the legislation was correct because the Polish state had ceased to exist under Nazi and Soviet occupation.
The government was surprised, however, by the widespread outrage the law caused, especially from two key Polish allies, Israel and the US, which saw it as an attempt to deny historical truth and muzzle testimony and research into the period.
The law also provoked a brief explosion of anti-Semitic feeling on social media and elsewhere in Poland.
But it's the harm the dispute has done to Poland's relations with the US and Israel that has caused the government to take this step.
Warsaw has enough problems in Europe thanks to its dispute with the EU over reforms to the Polish judiciary, so it does not want to fight another front with Washington.
For Poland, the US guarantees its security against potential threats from Russia. The fact that Poland's President Andrzej Duda did not get a chance to meet President Donald Trump during his recent visit to the US may not have helped either.
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said he still believed that those who said Poland was responsible for Nazi crimes deserved to be in prison. But he conceded that his government must take into account the international context.

Driver accused of plowing into crowd at Charlottesville rally charged with federal hate crimes

A federal grand jury in Virginia indicted an Ohio man Wednesday with federal hate crimes in the death of a woman run down by a car after a "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville last summer.
James Alex Fields Jr., 21, of Maumee, Ohio, had already been charged in state court in connection with the death of Heather Heyer for allegedly ramming his car into a group of counter-protesters.
Heyer was killed the last day of the August weekend rally organized by white supremacists and their sympathizers protesting the removal of Robert E. Lee's statue from a Charlottesville park. The highly publicized event drew supporters and counter-protesters to the university town in central Virginia.
Fields was indicted on one federal count of a hate crime resulting in Heyer's death, 28 counts of hate crimes for causing bodily injury and involving an attempt to kill and one count of racially motivated violent interference with a federally protected activity.
The grand jury was sitting in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia in Charlottesville.

In announcing the indictment, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said his department has determined that "hateful ideologies will not have the last word and their adherents will not get away with violent crimes against those they target."
Sessions said the indictment "should send a clear message to every would-be criminal in America that we aggressively prosecute violent crimes of hate that threaten the core principles of our nation."
According to the indictment, Fields traveled to Charlottesville to participate in the rally that was widely publicized on social media as associated with white supremacist individuals and other far-right groups.
After authorities declared the event an "unlawful assembly," Fields left the area, but returned in his car as crowds drifted away from the site of the rally, the indictment charged. He then encountered a group of counter-protesters who were chanting and carrying signs promoting equality and protesting against racial discrimination.
The indictment alleged that Fields slowly backed up his car in a downtown street then rapidly accelerated, ran through a stop sign and across a raised pedestrian mall, and drove directly into the crowd, hitting numerous individuals, killing Heyer, and injuring many others. He then fled the scene.
In January, Fields was charged by a state court with first-degree murder among other crimes for which he will be tried in November.
Shortly after the incident, President Donald Trump weighed in. "I think there is blame on both sides," Trump told reporters.
"What about the 'alt-left' that came charging at, as you say, the 'alt-right,' do they have any semblance of guilt?" Trump asked. "What about the fact they came charging with clubs in hands, swinging clubs, do they have any problem? I think they do."
"You had a group on one side that was bad and you had a group on the other side that was also very violent. Nobody wants to say it, but I will say it right now," Trump added.

Antwon Rose Jr. death: East Pittsburgh Officer Michael Rosfeld charged with criminal homicide
PITTSBURGH — The East Pittsburgh Police officer who fatally shot 17-year-old Antwon Rose Jr. on June 19 has been charged with criminal homicide. According to court records, East Pittsburgh Police Officer Michael Rosfeld was formally charged Wednesday morning.
In a criminal complaint filed in the case, detectives cite witnesses who said Rose clearly had nothing in his hands when he was shot, contradicting what Rosfeld initially told investigators.
Rose's family stood by, crying and wearing shirts that read "Justice for Antwon," as their attorneys spoke at a press conference Wednesday. Attorney Lee Merritt said the family is "cautiously optimistic" about the charge being filed, but said "criminal charges alone are going to be insufficient."
"We are in it for the long haul, to see this process through to conviction," Merritt said.
Rosfeld was conducting a traffic stop of the vehicle Rose was riding in, which police said fit the description of one used in a drive-by shooting that night. He told investigators he had ordered the driver out of the car, and down on the ground, when Rose got out of the vehicle.
According to Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala, Jr., Rose can be seen on witness video showing his hands before fleeing. No weapon was found on his person.
Rosfeld first told investigators that Rose "turned his hand toward" Rosfeld, who "saw something dark that he perceived as a gun," detectives wrote in the complaint. But when asked to repeat his version of events, Rosfeld's story changed, detectives wrote.
"During that rendition, Rosfeld told the detectives that he did not see a gun when the passenger emerged and ran. When confronted with this inconsistency, Rosfeld stated he saw something in the passenger's hand but was not sure what it was," detectives wrote in the complaint. "In addition, Officer Rosfeld stated that he was not certain if the individual who had his arm pointed at him was still pointing at him when he fired the shots."
Rosfeld opened fire, striking Rose three times from behind. Rose died from his injuries.

Criminal homicide is a broad category that includes manslaughter and murder. Pennsylvania prosecutors typically specify what subsection of homicide they will pursue later in the case.
A medical examiner determined Rose was struck in the cheek — exiting through the nasal passage — the right elbow from behind, and in the mid-back, which was the fatal shot, Zappala said during a press conference Wednesday. The bullet lodged in Rose's chest and was determined to be from Rosfeld's service weapon, Zappala said.
Rosfeld's actions were intentional and he was not acting to prevent death or serious injury, Zappala said.
"You do not shoot somebody in the back if they are not a threat to you," Zappala said.
Criminal homicide is a broad category that includes manslaughter and murder. Pennsylvania prosecutors typically specify what subsection of homicide they will pursue later in the case. Zappala said the officer's actions clearly support a third-degree murder conviction but they will ask the jury to consider a full range of charges, including first-degree murder.
Zappala said Rosfeld is remorseful.
CBS Pittsburgh reports that according to sources, Rosfeld had only been on duty in East Pittsburgh for three weeks, and he was formally sworn in about 90 minutes before the fatal shooting. Rosfeld had been working as a police officer in the region since 2011.
He had previously worked in Harmarville and Oakmont. He also worked for the University of Pittsburgh Police Department and was reportedly dismissed for cause from the university. The university turned his personnel file over to county investigators as part of the investigation.
Rose family attorneys said they have filed a writ to obtain he personnel file. They said they believed it would show "prior egregious behavior" and a history of falsifying reports. Asked by reporters if he saw anything in Rosfeld's past employment records that raised concerns, Zappala said yes but declined to elaborate.
The shooting happened around 8:30 p.m. on June 19 in East Pittsburgh. Police were initially called to Kirkpatrick Avenue in North Braddock for reports of a drive-by shooting. At the scene, they found a 22-year-old man injured. That man was taken to the hospital, where he was treated and released for a wound to the abdomen that may have been a graze wound from a bullet or a building fragment, Zappala said.
Police obtained surveillance footage of a vehicle that was seen fleeing the scene of that shooting and alerted nearby departments. The drive-by shooter appeared to be sitting in the rear passenger seat. Rose was sitting in the the front passenger seat of the vehicle Rosfeld pulled over in in East Pittsburgh around 10 minutes later.
Zaijuan Hester, 17, another passenger in the vehicle, fled and remained at large for a week. He was later located and arrested on June 26. He will face charges in connection to the North Braddock shooting. Video shows the person who fired shots from the car in North Braddock was in the backseat and wearing a dark tee-shirt, which Hester was wearing, Zappala said. Rose was riding in the front passenger seat and wearing a white tee-shirt, he said.
Other evidence indicates Hester was the gunman, he said.
Rose was not involved in the North Braddock shooting other than being in the car, Zappala said.
"By all accounts Mr. Rose never did anything in furtherance of any crimes in North Braddock," Zappala said.
Hester was charged as an adult with aggravated assault, possession of firearm by a minor, receiving stolen property, persons not to possess firearms, and criminal attempt.
Neither Rose nor Hester were armed when Rosfeld opened fire, and Rosfeld admitted he never saw a weapon, Zappala said, which he called "significant."
Zappala said said [sic] two weapons, both stolen, were found in the car, one of which was used in the North Braddock shooting and another that was linked to three or four other crimes, Zappala said. Rose had an empty clip in his pocket, Zappala said.
Rosfeld was placed on paid administrative leave after the shooting, which has triggered protests in the area.
Rosfeld's bail, which was opposed by prosecutors, was set at $250,000, according to court documents. Rosfeld was released and a preliminary hearing is set for July 6.
Rosfeld's attorney Patrick Thomassey told CBS Pittsburgh he doesn't believe this is a murder case. Thomassey said his client was in a dangerous situation.
"Clearly, the people in the car were armed. Clearly at least one person in the car was firing at somebody and shot somebody right up the road. Police officers are there to protect," Thomassey said.
He said he believes his client had the "right to shoot" under the law.
Rose family attorneys said the bail for low for a murder case and said it would represent their first legal hurdle. Zappala said he had spoken with Rose's family.
"They are very distraught about the loss of their son, who by all accounts was a good kid," Zappala said.

UNFORTUNATELY, THIS SORT OF STORY REPEATS OVER AND OVER, WHICH IS WHAT MAKES ME THINK THAT GOOD SELECTION AND TRAINING OF OFFICERS IS A LARGE PART OF THE PROBLEM OR THE SOLUTION, AND THAT WHILE TRUE HUMAN ERROR DEFINITELY DOES OCCUR UNDER STRESS, COMPETITIVENESS IS BASIC TO THE ASSERTIVENESS THAT POLICE NEED IN ORDER TO BE EFFECTIVE ON THE STREET. IT MUST BE CONTROLLED AND PROPERLY CHANNELED TO PRODUCE A GOOD LAW ENFORCER, THOUGH. THEIR GOALS AND ACTIONS MUST FIT IN WITH JUSTICE IN IT’S FINER FORM, FAIRNESS. A TIME IS COMING WHEN POLICE WILL HAVE TO AMEND THE WAY THEY HANDLE HUMAN INTERACTIONS ALSO. GOING BY THE ACTIONS OF AG ZAPPALLA, HE IS WILLING TO PUT A STOP TO RANDOM KILLINGS BY POLICE OFFICERS. THERE WILL CERTAINLY BE UPS AND DOWNS ON THIS, BUT MOST AMERICANS PROBABLY AREN’T READY FOR THE POLICE STATE YET.

Zappala said said two weapons, both stolen, were found in the car, one of which was used in the North Braddock shooting and another that was linked to three or four other crimes, Zappala said.

Teen was 42nd child to flee network of migrant shelters along border since October
BROWNSVILLE, Texas -- A teenage boy who crossed the southern border unaccompanied recently has gone missing from the shelter where he was housed after being taken into custody, officials confirmed to CBS News.
The 15-year-old had been living at the Casa Padre shelter for unaccompanied minors in Brownsville, Texas. The facility is a former Walmart that has been retrofitted to house more than 1,000 youths transferred from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
Southwest Key Programs is the company contracted by HHS' Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) to operate the Casa Padre facility, one of 26 shelters it oversees in Texas, Arizona and California. In a phone call with CBS News, spokesman Jeff Eller said 42 children have decided on their own to leave and not return to Southwest Key facilities since Oct. 1. He said the children typically climb a fence. Eller noted that the number of children who have gone missing accounts for just 0.21 percent of the 19,846 children the organization has cared for during that time.
A source familiar with the situation told CBS News the boy was outside in a playground during scheduled recreational time Saturday when he "took off and climbed the fence." Facility staff did not try to restrain the boy, though they did briefly attempt to convince him to stay.
The ORR policy manual notes that child care providers must ensure each facility has "controlled entry and exit from the premises to ensure unaccompanied alien children remain within the facility perimeter."
However, Eller said in an earlier email that the child left of his own accord, and that the non-profit's employees were not allowed to stop him.
"As a licensed child care center, if a child attempts to leave any of our facilities, we cannot restrain them. We are not a detention center," Eller said. "We talk to them and try to get them to stay. If they leave the property, we call law enforcement."
Eller said the child was reported missing to local authorities.
The boy arrived alone at the border recently, according to an HHS spokesperson. His father lives in the United States and is in the process of being vetted to be the boy's sponsor.
"When an (unaccompanied alien child) is reported as missing, local authorities, the Department of Homeland Security, and the UAC's Parent (or emergency contact) are notified. When a UAC is found, the UAC will be returned to DHS custody and most likely referred back to HHS until a suitable sponsor is found," the agency said in a statement emailed to CBS News.
Local and federal officials are searching for the boy, the spokesperson said.

Commentary: The message "86-ing" Sarah Sanders sent to conservatives
When it comes to the story of Sarah Huckabee Sanders and the Red Hen restaurant, you can't blame conservatives for being confused.
A few weeks ago, the owner of Colorado's Masterpiece Cakeshop was a national villain for refusing to bake a custom cake to celebrate a same-sex marriage. American liberals were outraged when the U.S. Supreme Court -- by a 7-2 margin -- refused to force the owner, Jack Phillips, to either set aside his moral objections to gay marriages and make the cake or else shut down.
"The Court today has offered dangerous encouragement to those who would deny civil rights to LGBT people and people living with HIV," Lambda Legal CEO Rachel B. Tiven said at the time.
"Bigotry Baked In" was the headline from the National Center for Transgender Equality.
And while liberals across the country slammed the bakery's Yelp page with negative reviews, one denouncing its "hatred sweets," Hollywood figures like Seth McFarlane and Judd Apatow took to Twitter to denounce the court's ruling: "the Supreme Court has approved of hate," Apatow wrote.
So refusing to serve someone because doing so would violate your personal beliefs on what you believe is an important moral issue -- that's bad, right?
Apparently not.
The Washington Post reports that the owner of the Red Hen, a small farm-to-table restaurant in Lexington, Virginia, refused to serve White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Friday night. Why? "This feels like the moment in our democracy when people have to make uncomfortable actions and decisions to uphold their morals," Red Hen owner Stephanie Wilkins told the Post. "We just felt there are moments in time when people need to live their convictions. This appeared to be one."
You can practically hear the neck-snapping double-takes from the American Right echoing across the internet. "Sarah Sanders can now drive in Saudi Arabia, but not dine freely in Virginia," conservative wit @Hale_Razor quipped on Twitter.
The treatment of Sanders at the Red Hen restaurant is the very incarnation of the double standard many conservative Americans feel they've lived under for years. Their social media feeds are full of liberals supporting the very same behavior for which they've been condemned as (literally) "bigots" and "Nazis."
Liberal activists who denounced the Colorado bakery rushed to the internet to celebrate the treatment of Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
"Sarah Sanders is whining about not being served at the Red Hen restaurant, because she is a terrible person who lies for Trump and hurts this country," said Democratic Coalition founder and MSNBC contributor Scott Dworkin. "Cry me a river. Go eat at a KKK restaurant."
New York playwright Paul Rudnick said Sanders "should get used to being denied entry at nice places, like restaurants, democracies and heaven."
And the same Judd Apatow who decried the Masterpiece Cakeshop ruling retweeted messages supporting the Red Hen's refusal of service.
Just this week, conservatives have seen Sanders ejected from a restaurant, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen being screamed at while she ate dinner at a Mexican restaurant in D.C., and Seth Rogen on CBS' "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" bragging about how he refused to take a photo with House Speaker Paul Ryan and his family (he had already taken a picture with Ryan's sons). And instead of being viewed as "terrorists" and "extremists," as Tea Partiers were during the Obama era, the perpetrators are celebrated for standing up to "evil."
Not everyone on the Left had the same reaction, though. Former President Obama's senior political adviser, David Axelrod, had a message for his fellow liberals: "Kind of amazed and appalled by the number of folks on Left who applauded the expulsion of @PressSec and her family from a restaurant. This, in the end, is a triumph for @realDonaldTrump vision of America: Now we're divided by red plates & blue plates!"
On CBS News' "Face the Nation" Sunday, Congressman Elijah Cummings, D-Maryland, concurred: "As far as the restaurant incident, I think the restaurant owner should have served her. I really do."
But conservatives believe, and with good reason, that the view of the liberal-dominated media culture is that tolerance and understanding is one-way street. "Tolerate us," they say, "or we'll come after you."
For her part, the restaurant owner described her conversation this way: "I explained that the restaurant has certain standards that I feel it has to uphold, such as honesty, and compassion, and cooperation." And her display of compassion and cooperation was to throw Sanders out?
Cultural conservatives realize that they are a political minority in America. With the glaring exception of abortion (American support for pro-life positions has increased over the past two decades), they have largely lost the battles for what the believe are fundamental family values necessary for the nation to succeed and prosper. As a political force, they've moved from their "Moral Majority" days of offense to a position of defense. They're asking the tolerant, inclusive Left to simply leave them alone. Their belief that progressives are determined to force them into accepting liberal views was one reason many evangelicals set aside their "Character counts" mantra in order to back Trump. The Left, they believe, isn't interested in political co-existence, but rather total victory.
The latest twist in the Sanders' saga appears to confirm that belief. On Sunday, the news cycle turned from the uncivil treatment of the White House spokesperson to a claim that she's broken the law by defending herself.
Obama's director of the Office of Government Ethics, Walter Shaub, accused Sanders of violating federal law when she tweeted about being kicked out of the restaurant. "Sarah, I know you don't care even a tiny little bit about the ethics rules," Shaub tweeted, "but [U]sing your official account for this is a clear violation of 5 CFR 2635.702(a). It's the same as if an ATF agent pulled out his badge when a restaurant tried to throw him/her out. "

Last night I was told by the owner of Red Hen in Lexington, VA to leave because I work for @POTUS and I politely left. Her actions say far more about her than about me. I always do my best to treat people, including those I disagree with, respectfully and will continue to do so

Unmentioned, however, was the fact that Sanders was responding to reports about the incident by, among others, Red Hen employees who took to social media to brag about turning her away. One posted a photo of the restaurant's white board declaring "86— Sarah Sanders." (The term "86" is restaurant jargon that means that an item has been removed from the menu or refusal of service).
And so once again, conservatives see what they believe are liberal America's rules of the game: When you follow your beliefs, you're the bad guy. When you're rudely treated by others for your beliefs…you're the bad guy. And when you defend yourself -- ditto.
Ari Fleischer, who had Sanders' job in the George W. Bush's White House, made this observation: "I guess we're heading into an America with Democrat-only restaurants, which will lead to Republican-only restaurants. Do the fools who threw Sarah out, and the people who cheer them on, really want us to be that kind of country?"
Matt Yglesias, of liberal website Vox.com, replied, "Who is going to cook the food at Republican-only restaurants," a reference to Republican support for border security.
Always on offense. No matter how offensive. That's the dish being served to many American conservatives today.

Top Democratic Congressman Loses Seat To N.Y. Democratic Socialist In Huge Upset
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez won an unexpected victory against powerful incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley, all but guaranteeing her a seat in the U.S. House.

PHOTOGRAPH -- JENNIFER MASON, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez canvasses in the Bronx borough of New York City.
In the biggest primary upset of 2018, powerful Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.) lost his seat to progressive political newcomer Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Tuesday.
Crowley is the chair of the House Democratic Caucus, and he was often named as a future leader of the party, should Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) retire one day.
The victory for Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old Latina candidate with modest resources and views that easily make her one of the most left-wing members of Congress, would be significant under any circumstances. That she won in the 14th Congressional District against Crowley, the House Democratic Caucus chairman and a leading candidate for Speaker, is nothing short of remarkable. It was the first time Crowley faced a serious primary challenge in 14 years.
Her win is the most historic ouster of a congressional leader since former GOP Majority Leader Eric Cantor lost his Virginia seat to tea party challenger Dave Brat in June 2014.
“This is not an end, this is the beginning. This is the beginning because the message that we sent the world tonight is that it’s not OK to put donors before your community,” Ocasio-Cortez told her supporters Tuesday night.
In his concession statement, Crowley said he would support Ocasio-Cortez in November.
“The Trump administration is a threat to everything we stand for here in Queens and the Bronx, and if we don’t win back the House this November, we will lose the nation we love,” he said. “This is why we must come together. We will only be able to stop Donald Trump and the Republican Congress by working together, as a united Democratic Party.”

Ocasio-Cortez’s party Tuesday night, held at a Bronx pool hall with no stage, started small and quickly grew as it became apparent that she would defeat Crowley. In attendance was Cynthia Nixon, the actress and progressive candidate challenging New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) in the Sept. 13 primary, as well as Zephyr Teachout, the law professor running for state attorney general.
What culminated as a celebration of progressive strength, however, began largely outside the national media spotlight. She went door to door introducing herself to voters, quietly putting together the operation needed to get on the ballot in a state with notoriously byzantine election rules. Her bid caught fire among a small and intense group of progressive activists.
But most national poll watchers viewed Crowley’s re-election as a foregone conclusion.
New York’s diverse 14th District is heavily Democratic, and Ocasio-Cortez is expected to win in November. Her GOP opponent is Anthony Pappas, a St. John’s University professor.
“Our district is overwhelmingly people of color, it’s working class, it’s very immigrant ― and it hasn’t had the representation we’ve needed,” Ocasio-Cortez, a second-generation Puerto Rican, told HuffPost earlier this month. Crowley, 56, who hails from a middle-class Irish family, has been in Congress for nearly two decades.
In beating the incumbent, the progressive millennial, who has never held elected office, also scored a victory for the wave of women running for office since President Donald Trump’s election ― following other notable primary victories so far for Stacey Abrams in Georgia and Lupe Valdez in Texas.

Ocasio-Cortez’s progressive platform includes ideas like a $15 minimum wage and Medicare for all, which have become more mainstream among Democratic Party leaders in recent years, as well as more radical proposals, like abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement and having a federal job guarantee.
Ocasio-Cortez’s victory is the biggest electoral coup to date for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and his network of allied groups.
Ocasio-Cortez was an organizer for Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign, and Justice Democrats, a left-leaning group formed by former Sanders staffers, was one of her earliest boosters. Our Revolution, a group Sanders founded as a successor to his campaign, also backed her.
Ocasio-Cortez will also be the only current member of Congress who is a dues-paying member of the Democratic Socialists of America.
How will Trump's administration impact you?
The newcomer won despite her campaign coffers lagging far behind Crowley’s: She raised over $300,000, compared to about $3.4 million for Crowley.
Ocasio-Cortez touted her working-class roots and her campaign’s refusal to take corporate money in her bid to win voters over to her grassroots campaign.
“I’m not running from the left; I’m running from the bottom,” the Bronx-born candidate told HuffPost earlier this month. “I’m running in fierce advocacy for working-class New Yorkers.”
Republicans immediately gloated at the results ― even though the party has almost no shot at taking the seat.
“Democrats have spent millions rigging primaries across the country but couldn’t spare a dime for poor Joe Crowley tonight,” said NRCC spokesman Matt Gorman. “House Democrats, hoping for a post-Pelosi era, are now left leaderless. The only person happier tonight than Nancy Pelosi is the NRCC.”
RELATED COVERAGE -- How This Young Latina Candidate Is Shaking Up A New York Congressional Race
Ocasio-Cortez’s team made it a point to not take corporate PAC money, while Crowley accepted donations from corporate PACs and companies’ employees or owners. While about two-thirds of her campaign donations so far have been small, under-$200 contributions, less than 1 percent of Crowley’s funds were.
“I see people like me, who thought someone like me couldn’t be in politics,” Ocasio-Cortez told HuffPost earlier this month. “[They] now are saying, ‘Oh, wait, I don’t need to take money from corporations to run. Maybe I’ll run, too.’”
Ultimately, local politics likely played as much of a role in Crowley’s defeat as national cross-currents. Crowley is not only the fourth-highest-ranking Democrat in the House and a leading fundraiser for his colleagues.
As chairman of the Queens County Democratic Party, he is also one of the most influential figures in New York City politics. His role atop what is widely viewed as one of the last true political machines in American politics earned him the moniker “The King of Queens.”
Just as Crowley’s predecessor, Thomas Manton, tapped him to run in 1998 in a way that virtually assured Crowley’s win, Democrats hoping to rise in the populous borough had to go through Crowley.
Reporting in The Intercept documented ways in which Crowley had used his status to benefit himself and cronies. For example, attorneys tied to Crowley have won a disproportionate share of the legal business at the Queens County Surrogate’s Court, which processes the estates of Queens residents who died without wills.
The political post gave Crowley obvious advantages. As recently as last Monday, he held an official event at the Queens Library at Woodside, where other senior Queens officials praised him for helping secure an additional $6.5 million from the New York City budget to renovate the facility.
But it also bred resentment among working-class constituents who chafed at his top-down influence and harbored a sense that he had ignored their concerns about the rising cost of housing. It undoubtedly did not help matters that Crowley’s primary residence was in the Washington suburb of Arlington, Virginia.
As Ocasio-Cortez spoke at a news conference in East Elmhurst in Queens last week, several Latino supporters interjected with chants in Spanish, “Yes to the change. No to the machine.”
Speakers and attendees at the event, which announced the endorsement of the Pan-American Democratic Association in Queens, just as often cited Crowley’s role in permitting the construction of a Target facility nearby and fears of gentrification as they did his vote for the Iraq War in 2002 when explaining their support for Ocasio-Cortez.
Notwithstanding her staunch progressive views, in an interview with HuffPost after the news conference, Ocasio-Cortez insisted that she would welcome opportunities to work with Republicans. Two areas she sees as potential grounds for cooperation are the Dream Act and criminal justice reform.
Asked whether she would accept a meeting with President Donald Trump, Ocasio-Cortez was more reluctant.
“Probably not. I would probably want conditions. I would make demands,” she said with a chuckle. “I’m not gonna give him a photo-op because he wants it.”
Whitney Snyder contributed reporting.

Asylum applicant seeks news of separated 3-year-old granddaughter
The Trump administration says it is still separating a small number of immigrant children from adults. The action is reportedly taken when parental relationships cannot be confirmed, or if the adult is deemed to pose a threat to the child's safety.
CBS News correspondent Mireya Villarreal, reporting from Tornillo, Texas, spoke to a Mexican grandmother who says her granddaughter was taken away, even though she is her legal guardian.
Last week Villarreal interviewed Angelica and three-year-old Sophia, just before they crossed the border seeking asylum. Angelica was worried Sophia might be taken away, even though she is the only mother the little girl has ever known.
On Friday, her worst fear came true.
sophia-age-3-promo.jpg
Sophia, age 3, last week. The girl's grandmother tells "CBS This Morning" that immigration officials separated the two at the border despite documents proving her to be the child's legal guardian. CBS NEWS
"Sophia was pleading with her not to leave to leave her alone, not to let her go, not to leave her with the police," Villarreal reports.
Angelica told "CBS This Morning" she does not know where her three-year-old granddaughter Sophia is, ever since they were separated by immigration officials on Friday – this despite having papers proving that she is Sophia's legal guardian. Angelica said she was told the documents don't matter.
Ruben Garcia, who runs the Annunciation House in El Paso, which provides shelter and legal assistance to immigrants, is helping Angelica and other separated families.
On Sunday, Annunciation House took in 32 immigrant parents after federal authorities withdrew criminal charges for illegal entry. The parents were separated from their children, and do not know where they are.
"When this policy was implemented in the beginning, it was implemented without any plan," Garcia said at a press conference.
The Department of Homeland Security says there is a process to "ensure family members know the location of their children." There is a 1-800 number, and an email providing information. Homeland Security also says the reunification process is "well-coordinated."
But Garcia says it is not: "The system is set up that, once you take the child from the parent, the parent then is presumed to potentially not be adequate to regain their child."

Angelica says immigration officials removed her three-year-old granddaughter at border despite having documents proving her to be the child's legal guardian. CBS NEWS
Garcia also says immigrants at the Annunciation House have not found the 1-800 number to be helpful.
It's also unclear if parents detained by the government have access to e-mail or the ability to call the 1-800 number for information about their child.
Angelica says immigration officials told her it will be days before she gets any information on Sophia's whereabouts.
When asked what the hardest part of this ordeal has been, she replied, "Being away from her, separated."
The official told her that Sophia would be in a place that was safe and secure, "but there is nothing like being with family."
Angelica's asylum case is pending in immigration court.

Saudi women begin driving, pushing limits of their freedom
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia -- A new era is underway in Saudi Arabia; newly-empowered women got behind the wheel at the stroke of midnight on Sunday as the world's last ban on female drivers ended. It was an emotional moment for many women who have been fighting nearly three decades for the freedom.
A small number of brave Saudi women protested for 28 years, demanding the right to drive and risking arrest, but they didn't get anywhere until Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman decided to shake up the Islamic Kingdom with a series of reforms – allowing cinemas, music concerts, and women to finally get in the driving seat.
It was one short drive for college student Hanan al Hussein, one huge leap forward for Saudi Arabia. She's one of hundreds of Saudi women who now have their licenses, reports CBS News correspondent Holly Williams.
"I like being independent. I don't like to count on someone else to do my stuff for me," al Hussein told CBS News.
The Saudi government has set up high-tech, all-female driving schools to help others pass their tests. Women are now joining the workforce in record numbers and pushing the limits of their freedom.
Hana is a fan of extreme sports who agreed to shown us her drift driving skills.
"It's like I'm in control of where I want to go," Hana said. "This feeling, I love it."
Her family, however, prefers that she doesn't show her face on camera. It's a reminder that this remains a deeply conservative country where women need a male relative's permission to travel overseas or get married.
They've set up simulators outside a busy shopping mall to tempt more women to drive, but changing old attitudes in Saudi Arabia won't be easy.
In the last few weeks, the Saudi government has arrested several women's rights campaigners who pushed for even greater equality. They're accused of conspiring against the authorities.

Outcry after woman calls police on little girl selling water
Eight-year-old Jordan Rodgers was selling bottled water on a San Francisco sidewalk for about 15 minutes when she was confronted by Alison Ettel for not having a permit.
"She asked me where's my permit? And I didn't know what a permit was," Jordan told CBS News.
There has been a growing backlash online against Ettel, who is white, who allegedly called police on the little girl, who is black, since Jordan's mother, Erin Austin, intervened and recorded the interaction on video.
Why call the police, Ettel was asked? "Um, illegally selling water without a permit," she replied.

Austin says she is not sure if race was a factor for the woman who reported it, but said that woman was filled with hate for calling the police on such a young girl.
DeMarco Morgan reports Jordan was selling water because she wanted to go on her first-ever trip to Disneyland.
"Recently I lost my job and we were planning a trip to Disneyland before that happened," Austin said. "And so it kind of sidelined us a little bit. And my daughter just wanted to help."
In this latest instance of black people being reported to authorities for seemingly normal things, Ettel – now nicknamed by critics "Permit Patty" – has drawn comparisons to Jennifer Schulte. In April, Schulte (mocked online as "Barbecue Becky") called the police on a group of black people having a barbecue in a park.
Last month a Yale grad student called police on a classmate for napping in a common area.
And two months ago, two men were detained for using a Starbucks bathroom and sitting at a table for several minutes without ordering.
Ettel told the Huffington Post that she acted because Rodgers and her mother were screaming, but that after watching the video she feels "horrible and heart-wrenched."
