“THE TROUBLES” IN CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – THREE ARTICLES

IN THIS VIDEO, TRUMP SPEAKS AGAINST VIOLENCE “ON ALL SIDES,” WITH NO MENTION OF WHITE SUPREMACY GROUPS. I DO AGREE THAT NO ONE IN THAT CROWD SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIGHTING. PICKETING WITH SIGNS AND MARCHING IS ALWAYS ACCEPTABLE TO ME, AND WHEN BLM GROUPS OR OTHERS GET A PARADE PERMIT AND MARCH IN THE STREET, THAT'S GREAT. I DON’T BELIEVE WE SHOULD BE RESTRICTED TO CONTACTING OUR GOVERNMENTAL OFFICIALS BY LETTER OR BY TELEPHONE, OF COURSE; AND I BELIEVE IN THE RIGHT TO TRUE SELF DEFENSE WHICH CAN ONLY OCCUR WHEN WE HAVE BEEN ATTACKED PHYSICALLY. A LOUD, RUDE AND STRONGLY FELT DISAGREEMENT DOESN’T COUNT. BOTH OF THOSE GROUPS FACING OFF HAVING A CHANT OFF WOULD BE OKAY, TOO. SOUNDS LIKE FUN! BUT THIS BUSINESS OF COMING TO THE RALLY BY THE THOUSANDS AND CARRYING BASEBALL BATS OR WORSE IS UN-ACCEPTABLE.

A YEAR AGO, TRUMP ALSO REFUSED TO DECLINE THE FINANCIAL AND VERBAL SUPPORT OF DAVID DUKE OR DENOUNCE HIM; SAYING THAT HE “DIDN’T KNOW WHO DUKE WAS” AND THAT HE WAS ALSO UNFAMILIAR WITH THE KKK. THAT’S ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. HE GREW UP IN THIS COUNTRY. HOW COULD THAT BE TRUE? IT IS TRUE, THOUGH, THAT THE OPPOSING PROTESTERS CAME TO FIGHT AS WELL – AT LEAST MANY DID. BOTH GROUPS CAME FROM OUTSIDE THE CITY AND STATE. THE NEWS FOOTAGE SHOWED A TRUE FREE FOR ALL OF FIGHTING WITH FISTS, BASEBALL BATS AND ONE MAN WAS CAUGHT WITH A GUN. THIS ABC ARTICLE INCLUDES VIDEO OF THE HORRIFIC CAR ASSAULT AND THE AFTERMATH. WE ALL NEED TO WATCH IT IN ORDER TO PUT AN IMAGE OF WHAT IS OCCURRING HERE, AND WHAT WE AS A PEOPLE ARE LOSING EVERY DAY THAT THIS GOES ON.

White nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia sparks violent clashes, turns deadly
By MICHAEL EDISON HAYDEN Aug 12, 2017, 3:18 AM ET

VIDEO – Hatred in the streets, ABC News of car assault

The usually quiet university city of Charlottesville, Virginia, erupted into chaos Saturday when far-right extremists gathering for a "Unite the Right" event clashed with counter-protesters, leaving more than a dozen injured and several under arrest.

The melee turned deadly in the morning when a car plowed into a group of counter-protesters, killing a 32-year-old woman and leaving 19 others injured, five critically. The driver was charged with murder in an incident a bystander described as "the most horrible thing I've ever witnessed."

And two state troopers who were part of the response to the events in Charlottesville died when their helicopter crashed several miles outside the city.

The gathering of white nationalists was roundly condemned and a number of politicians called for the events to be called a terror attack. But president Trump drew scrutiny for issuing what some viewed as an equivocating statement that there was "hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides."

The state of Virginia declared the gathering unlawful and ordered both rallygoers and counter-protesters to "disperse immediately," but tensions boiled over in the city's streets well into the afternoon Saturday.

The Virginia State Police posted videos on Facebook of officers breaking up the Unite the Right gathering and counter-protest. Warning: The videos contain some offensive language and images.

One video shows an officer in announcing to milling crowds: "This gathering has been declared as to be an unlawful assembly; in the name of the Commonwealth, you are commanded to immediately disperse; if you do not disperse immediately you will be arrested.” Another video shows some of the crowd.

Charlottesville police reported Saturday evening that 14 people had been injured in the clashes and that more than a dozen others were injure in the vehicle ramming incident that left a woman dead in the city's downtown. Police charged James Alex Fields, 20, of Ohio Saturday night with second degree murder related to the death.

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe referenced two additional fatalities during a Saturday press conference, but did not elaborate on the nature of the deaths. President Donald Trump tweeted condolences "to the families & fellow officers of the VA State Police who died today" shortly after.

Saturday evening, the state police announced three additional arrests in relation to the planned rally, issuing charges of disorderly conduct, misdemeanor assault and battery, and carrying a concealed handgun to three individuals, respectively.

The individuals were Troy Dunigan, 21, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, arrested and charged with disorderly conduct; Jacob L. Smith, 21, of Louisa, Virginia, arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault and battery; James M. O’Brien, 44, of Gainesville, Florida, arrested and charged with carrying a concealed handgun.

The attempted rally and clashes came after a Friday night march by torch-bearing white nationalists on and near the University of Virginia campus, which resulted in brawls with protesters countering the event.

The Unite the Right event Saturday was supposed to begin at noon, but people both in support and opposed to the rally began gathering earlier and by 11 a.m. two people had been treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries after an altercation at the city's Emancipation Park, according to city officials.

McAuliffe placed the National Guard on standby in preparation for the rally, an action he took even before the clashes Friday night.

On Saturday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions released a statement condemning the violence.

"I have been in contact with our Department of Justice agents assisting at the scene and state officials," Sessions said. "We will continue to support our state and local officers on the ground in any way possible. We stand united behind the President in condemning the violence in Charlottesville and any message of hate and intolerance. This kind of violence is totally contrary to American values and can never be tolerated. I want to thank all law enforcement personnel in the area for their commitment to protecting this community and the rule of law."

Charlottesville has become a flash point for white nationalists and protesters seeking to counter them since a city council vote in February to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from a park formerly called Lee Park but renamed in June as Emancipation Park.

A group opposed to the council's decision sued, and in May a judge issued a six-month injunction against the city's removing the statue while litigation proceeds.

On Friday night, hundreds of white nationalists carrying torches and chanting "white lives matter," "you will not replace us," and the Nazi-associated phrase "blood and soil*" marched near a statue of Thomas Jefferson on the grounds of the University of Virginia, and were met by counterprotesters.

Police arrived on campus, declared it an unlawful assembly, and ordered the crowds to disperse. University police arrested one person who was charged with assault and disorderly conduct, a university statement Saturday said. "Several other members of the university community sustained minor injuries during the confrontation."

McAuliffe was direct Saturday night in his condemnation of those who arrived to attend the rally Saturday, telling the group to "go home."

"You are not wanted in this great commonwealth. Shame on you," he said. "You pretend that you're patriots, but you are anything but a patriot."

University President Teresa A. Sullivan, "strongly condemned the demonstration," the statement said, adding that the "intimidating and abhorrent behavior displayed by the alt-right protesters was wrong."

Charlottesville Mayor Mike Signer called the event "a cowardly parade of hatred, bigotry, racism, and intolerance," adding that he was "beyond disgusted by this unsanctioned and despicable display of visual intimidation on a college campus."

A mass prayer service was held at St. Paul’s Memorial Church on University Avenue that was organized in response to the rally, according to The Daily Progress, a local paper.

Cornel West, a prominent leftist philosopher and political activist, spoke at the prayer service, calling the "Unite the Right" rally the “biggest gathering of a hate-driven right wing in the history of this country in the last 30 to 35 years,” the Daily Progress reported.

A similar rally in which white supremacists carried tiki torches to protest the removal of that and other statues of Confederate leaders throughout the South took place in May.

BLOOD AND SOIL* CITIZENSHIP HAS AN OLDER MEANING THAN ITS’ USE TODAY IN CHARLOTTESVILLE; AND IS DIRECTLY CONNECTED TO THE POLITICAL THEORY OF ADOLPH HITLER’S REGIME. SEE THE INTERESTING WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE BELOW. WHENEVER A NEW GROUP BRINGS UP A SLOGAN LIKE THIS, THEY CAN SAFELY BE ASSUMED TO BE CREATING AN INTENTIONAL LINK WITH THE ORIGINATORS. IN THIS CASE IT’S THE NAZI MOVEMENT. WE SHOULDN’T BE IGNORING THE IMPLICATIONS OF THAT, JUST SO WE WON’T OFFEND ANYONE. THAT KIND OF SOCIAL CAREFULNESS IS THE REASON WHY AN UNDERCURRENT ACTIVE RACISM HAS EXISTED IN THE US SINCE THE TIME OF SLAVERY. SAYING NOTHING IN SOME CASES IS TACIT ACCEPTANCE AND EVEN AGREEMENT. WE NEED TO SEARCH OUR HEARTS.

SEE THESE TWO ARTICLES. THE FIRST EXPLAINS ITS’ USE IN OUR OWN NATIONAL LAWS; AND THE SECOND, ITS’ USE IN NAZI GERMANY. THE WORD “BLOOD” HERE ISN’T A REFERENCE TO VIOLENCE, BUT TO GENETIC BLOODLINES. BY THE WAY, THIS “LAW OF BLOOD” MUST DIRECTLY MAKE BARACK OBAMA AN AMERICAN CITIZEN, WHETHER OR NOT HE WAS BORN IN HAWAII AS HE HAS STATED, BECAUSE HE WAS CERTAINLY BORN OF AN AMERICAN CITIZEN.

SO, WHAT ARE THE LAW OF SOIL AND THE LAW OF BLOOD? THIS IS USED IN REFERENCE TO US CITIZENSHIP AS WELL AS HITLER’S GERMANY, APPARENTLY. SEE THE WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE BELOW ON THAT.

Answered by The WikiAnswers® Community

THE LAW OF SOIL (also known as "Jus Soli") is when an offspring is born in the U.S., they are granted citizenship.

THE LAW OF BLOOD (also known as "Jus Sanguinis") is when an offspring of an American citizen, you are a natural born U.S. citizen.

THERE ARE SEVERAL PHRASES IN THE WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE BELOW ON BLOOD AND SOIL THAT ARE IDENTICAL TO THINGS THAT DONALD TRUMP OR THE ALT-RIGHT HAVE USED: “THE MORAL SWAMP OF THE CITY[7];” "LOYALTY" TO “THE VOLK” OVER “ABSTRACT UNIVERSALS”; "YOU WILL NOT REPLACE US," AND THE PHRASE “BLOOD AND SOIL.” THE "MORAL SWAMP" REFERS TO THE HEALTHY COUNTRY LIFE OVER THE CHANCES TO SIN THAT EXIST IN THE CITIES; “YOU WILL NOT REPLACE US” IS A REFERENCE TO THE GENETIC SHIFTS THAT OCCUR WHEN PEOPLE OF LIGHTER SKIN AND EYES MATE WITH THOSE OF THE DARKER SHADES. EUGENICS IS KEY TO THE NAZI VIEWPOINTS.

“BLOOD AND SOIL” WAS COINED IN THE LATE 1800S AND PUBLICIZED IN A 1930 BOOK BY A NAZI NAMED RICHARD WALTHER DARRÉ, ENTITLED “A NEW NOBILITY BASED ON BLOOD AND SOIL.” UNLESS I’M MISTAKEN, THIS LOYALTY TO “THE VOLK” OVER “ABSTRACT UNIVERSALS,” WHICH PROBABLY INCLUDES THINGS LIKE LOVE, HONOR, HONESTY, KINDNESS, GENEROSITY, INDIVIDUAL HUMAN RIGHTS, EGALITARIANISM, FREEDOM OF THOUGHT AND STUDY, AND THE RIGHT TO TRY TO BETTER OURSELVES IN THE WORLD IN GENERAL; WHICH MAY BE THE TRUE REASON FOR THE DEEPLY EVIL THINGS THAT WERE DONE UNDER HITLER. THE CITIZENS HAD BEEN CONVINCED, EITHER BY EXALTATION AT THE GLORIES OF THE FUHRER, OR THE SHEER RELIEF THAT THEY THEMSELVES WERE PERSONALLY SAFE AT THE MOMENT.

I WILL ALSO MAKE ONE OTHER COMMENT. THIS EMPHASIS ON “LOYALTY” IS ALSO ECHOED TIME AND AGAIN BY DONALD TRUMP. WITHOUT WISHING TO OFFEND ANYONE, LOVE DOES NOT NECESSARILY INCLUDE “LOYALTY.” I’M MUCH TOO CONSCIOUS OF THE FACT THAT THE RIGHT TO SELF-DEFENSE IS FOR ME A NECESSITY, AS IS THE RIGHT TO SEPARATE MYSELF FROM AN ABUSER.

IN THAT BOOK DARRE ALSO PROPOSED THE “‘SYSTEMIC EUGENICS PROGRAM’ ... AS A CURE-ALL FOR ALL THE PROBLEMS PLAGUING THE STATE.” IN THAT BOOK, HE ALSO POPULARIZED THE PHRASE “THE MORAL SWAMP OF THE CITIES,” WHICH IF I’M NOT OVERREACHING, IS VERY MUCH LIKE TRUMP’S CALLING WASHINGTON AND THE GOVERNMENT “THE SWAMP.” I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT TRUMP HAS BEEN READING.

BLOOD AND SOIL
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

“Blood and Soil (German: Blut und Boden) refers to a racist ideology that focuses on ethnicity based on two factors, descent blood (of a folk) and territory. It celebrates the relationship of a people to the land they occupy and cultivate, and it places a high value on the virtues of rural living.

The German expression was coined in the late 19th century, in tracts espousing racialism and national romanticism. It produced a regionalist literature, with some social criticism.[1] . . . .

Richard Walther Darré popularized the phrase at the time of the rise of Nazi Germany; he wrote a book called Neuadel aus Blut und Boden (A New Nobility Based On Blood And Soil), in 1930, which proposed a systemic eugenics program, arguing for breeding as a cure-all for all the problems plaguing the state.[5] Darré was an influential member of the Nazi party and a noted race theorist who assisted the party greatly in gaining support among common Germans outside the cities. Prior to their ascension to power, Nazis called for a return from the cities to the countryside.[6] This agrarian sentiment allowed opposition to both the middle class and the aristocracy, and presented the farmer as a superior figure beside the moral swamp of the city.[7]

The doctrine not only called for a "back to the land" approach and re-adoption of rural values; it held that German land was bound, perhaps mystically, to German blood.[8] Peasants were the Nazi cultural heroes, who held charge of German racial stock and German history—as when a memorial of a medieval peasant uprising was the occasion for a speech by Darré praising them as force and purifier of German history.[9] This would also lead them to understand the natural order better, and, in the end, only the man who worked the land really possessed it.[10] Urban culture was decried as a weakness, "asphalt culture", that only the Führer's will could eliminate — sometimes, as a code for Jewish influence.[11] . . . .

Carl Schmitt argued that a people would develop laws appropriate to its "blood and soil" because authenticity required loyalty to the Volk over abstract universals.[14]

Neues Volk
displayed demographic charts to deplore the destruction of the generous Aryan families' farmland and claiming that the Jews were eradicating traditional German peasantry.[15] Posters for schools depicted and deplored the flight of people from the countryside to the city.[16] The German National Catechism, German propaganda widely used in schools, also recounted how farmers lost ancestral lands and had to move to the city, with all its demoralizing effects:[17]

Nazi implementation[edit]

The program received far more ideological and propaganda support than concrete changes.[18] When Gottfried Feder tried to settle workers in villages about decentralized factories, generals and Junkers successfully opposed him.[19] Generals objected because it interfered with rearmament, and Junkers because it would prevent their exploiting their estates for the international market.[20] It would also require the breakup of Junker estates for independent farmers, which was not implemented.[6]
. . . . The countryside was also regarded as the best place to raise infantry, and as having a organic harmony between landowner and peasant, unlike the "race chaos" of the industrial cities.[27] It also prevented Jews from farming: "Only those of German blood may be farmers."[28]

Blood and soil was one of the foundations of the concept of Lebensraum, "living space".[8] By expanding eastward and transforming those lands into breadbaskets, another blockade, such as that of World War I, would not cause massive food shortages, as that one had, a factor that aided the resonance of "Blood and soil" for the German population.[32] Even Alfred Rosenberg, not hostile to the Slavs as such, regarded their removal from this land, where Germans had once lived, as necessary because of the unity of blood and soil.[2] Mein Kampf prescribed as the unvarying aim of foreign policy the necessity of obtaining land and soil for the German people.[33]

Furthermore, this land, held by "tough peasant races", would serve as a bulwark against attack from Asia.[38]

. . . .

Japanese usage[edit]

An Investigation of Global Policy with the Yamato Race as Nucleus made extensive use of the term, usually in quotation marks, and showing an extensive debt to the Nazi usage.[59]

TODAY’S NEWS FOLLOWUP ARTICLE ON THE CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA SITUATION, BELOW, INCLUDES “CALLS FOR THE ACTIONS TO BE DEEMED TERRORISM,” ALTHOUGH NO SOURCE WAS NAMED FOR THAT. IF A PARTICULAR OFFICIAL OR NEWS OUTLET SAID IT, THAT MIGHT MATTER TO ME. I WOULD VERY LIKELY VOTE FOR THEM. IF MEMBERS OF OUR LEGISLATIVE BODIES, ESPECIALLY, SAID IT, PERHAPS IT MIGHT LEAD TO USEFUL ACTIONS AGAINST TERRORISTS, AND TO THE PREVENTION OF CRIME. CALLING IT BY ITS’ TRUE NAME IS A VITAL POINT ON MATTERS SUCH AS TERRORISM, ATTEMPTS TO OVERTHROW THE GOVERNMENT, THREATS OR OUTRIGHT VIOLENCE AGAINST ANYONE BASED ON MARGINALIZATION AND HATRED BY PRIVILEGED GROUPS. THAT WOULD CHANGE OUR LAWS TO STOP COSSETING CERTAIN GROUPS OF CRIMINALS; AND THEREFORE HAVE AN EFFECT ON THE APPROPRIATE PUNISHMENTS FOR ALL.

I DON’T BELIEVE THAT IT IS IN OUR BEST INTERESTS TO ALLOW VIOLENT HATE GROUPS TO HAVE FULL FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT AND INTERNET ACTIVITY, BECAUSE THAT KIND OF THING DOES NOT FIT INTO MY IDEA OF “RIGHTS,” BUT RATHER OF “CRIMES.” I THINK BULLYING SHOULD BE A CRIME. IF AN ORGANIZATION HAS BECOME NON-VIOLENT AND EGALITARIAN, AS THE KKK CLAIMS TO HAVE DONE, THAT WOULD BE ANOTHER MATTER. THE KKK HASN’T ACTUALLY STOPPED BEING VERBALLY RACIST, HOWEVER, AND THEY REMAIN ALL THE WAY OVER TO THE RIGHTIST POSITION, POLITICALLY. THOSE GROUPS TODAY ARE ACTIVE ON THEIR OWN INTERNET SITES, WITH INFLAMMATORY AND THREATENING COMMENTS ATTACHED TO THEIR WEBPAGES. THAT IS HOW THESE ALT-RIGHTERS OF ALL STRIPES GET IN TOUCH WITH EACH OTHER. SUCH A SITE MOST PROBABLY WILL BE USED TO ORGANIZE A CRIMINAL EVENT, AS THIS CHARLOTTESVILLE GROUP CERTAINLY DID. PEOPLE ARRESTED WERE NAMED IN THE NEWS STORY AS BEING FROM AS FAR AWAY AS OHIO AND FLORIDA.

THE NATIONAL LAWS MAY NOT BE STRONG ENOUGH ON TERRORISM, INCLUDING THE NEED FOR AN HONEST REVISION OF WHAT “TERRORISM” IS. TERRORISM IS AN “ISM” AND NOT AN ACTION. WAITING UNTIL THEY KILL SOMEONE OR BURN DOWN A BLACK CHURCH, SYNAGOGUE, ETC. IS TOO LATE. GROUPS LIKE THE ACLU AND ESPECIALLY THE SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW CENTER ARE DEEPLY INVOLVED IN THAT ISSUE, AND COULD CONSULT EFFECTIVELY WITH THE LEGISLATURE ON HOW LAWS SHOULD BE WORDED TO BE EFFECTIVE AND FAIR. THERE ARE UNDOUBTEDLY OTHER SUCH WATCHDOG GROUPS, WHICH ARE NOT FAMILIAR TO ME, AS WELL.

THE US GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO ACKNOWLEDGE FULLY THAT THE KKK AND ALL FORMS OF WHITE SUPREMACY ACTIVITY (OR MALICIOUS ETHNIC/RACIAL/POLITICAL ACTIVITIES OF ANY KIND) SHOULD BE DEEMED “TERRORISTIC” RATHER THAN MERELY “PROTECTED SPEECH.” THAT IS AND HAS BEEN A TREACHEROUSLY SLIPPERY SLOPE FOR AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER. THE SUPREME COURT HASN’T ALWAYS DONE ITS’ JOB THERE; BUT ALSO, IN ORDER FOR THE COURTS TO BE EFFECTIVE, LAWS NEED TO BE INCLUSIVE, CLEARLY WRITTEN, DIRECTLY TO THE POINT AND EFFECTIVE IN ALL WAYS. OFTEN WHEN A LAWYER “GETS THE CRIMINAL OFF,” IT’S BECAUSE THE LAW IS SO FULL OF LOOPHOLES THAT IT’S ABSOLUTELY WORTHLESS AS A TOOL OF JUSTICE. SO OFTEN LAWS ARE VAGUE AND GENERALIZED STATEMENTS THAT CAN BE SKIRTED OR IGNORED WITH A LITTLE BIT OF EFFORT. THEY NEED TEETH, AND THE LOOPHOLES NEED TO BE ELIMINATED.

WE MIGHT ALSO HAVE A LAW PROHIBITING THE REMOVAL OF ALL BONE FIDE HISTORICAL MONUMENTS WITHOUT A GOOD CAUSE. THAT PARTICULAR BIT OF SYMBOLISM IS ALMOST UNIVERSALLY IMPORTANT TO INDIVIDUALS AND GROUPS ALIKE. IN MANY TOWNS AND CITIES AN HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT PIECE OF SCULPTURE WILL BE IN THE MIDDLE OF A TRAFFIC CIRCLE IN THE TOWN CENTER, SO THAT IT DOESN’T PREVENT REASONABLE CONVENIENCE FOR DRIVERS, AND CAN STILL POSSESS A PROMINENT PLACE; OR PERHAPS THE STATUE OF A NORTHERN GENERAL (NOT SHERMAN!) COULD BE PLACED THERE BESIDE GENERAL LEE, SURROUNDED BY BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS, AND FITTED WITH AN APPROPRIATE PLAQUE SHOWING RESPECT AND GRATITUDE TO THE BLOOD SPILLED ON BOTH SIDES IN THE CIVIL WAR.

I THINK THAT MIGHT SMOOTH SOME FEATHERS. THAT UNHEALED DIVISION IS A VERY REAL REASON FOR THE TROUBLE WE ARE HAVING NOW. WE SHOULD ALL BE REQUIRED EVERY MONTH OR SO TO STAND TOGETHER AT THE SITE IN FRONT OF THE FLAG OF THE USA AND SAY THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE AND THE SERENITY PRAYER. IF THAT WERE DONE OFTEN ENOUGH, THAT WOULD BEGIN TO HELP HEAL THE WOUNDS, PERHAPS. IT WOULD AT ANY RATE INITIATE SOME THOUGHT ABOUT THE PROBLEMS INVOLVED. OF COURSE, IF CEREMONIES ARE ENFORCED RATHER THAN VOLUNTARY, THEY ARE NOT VERY EFFECTIVE TOWARD HUMAN CHANGE.

An Ohio man was charged with murder after a car plowed into a crowd of demonstrators following a foiled white nationalist rally Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia, killing a 32-year-old woman and leaving 19 others injured, police and officials said.

James Alex Fields, Jr. of Maumee, Ohio faces one count of second degree murder, three counts of malicious wounding and one count of hit-and-run after the incident, which sent pedestrians flying. In the wake of the crash, the Department of Justice opened an investigation into the incident.

"It was absolutely the most horrible thing I've ever witnessed," said Brittany Caine-Conley, the lead organizer with Congregate Charlottesville. "We ran to the scene and one of my friends actually tried to hold the wounds together for the woman who has passed away."

In a statement, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said that "the violence and deaths in Charlottesville strike at the heart of American law and justice. When such actions arise from racial bigotry and hatred, they betray our core values and cannot be tolerated."

White nationalist and other attendees clashed with those who arrived to oppose the demonstration, which began with a torch-wielding group marching through the city Friday evening and was intended to culminate in an event entitled "Unite the Right," set to begin at noon on Saturday.

However, the event -- which was roundly criticized on both sides of the aisle and included calls for the actions to be deemed terrorism -- was shut down by authorities early Saturday afternoon. Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency in the city and police ordered the crowds to disperse.

President Trump denounced the "egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides," but drew scrutiny for not condemning the white nationalists directly.

Dramatic video taken after the demonstration was shut down shows crowds walking along a downtown Charlottesville street as several cars move slowly along the same avenue. Abruptly, a gray Dodge rams into the back of another vehicle, slamming one or more cars ahead of it amid the crowd of protesters. The driver then rapidly reverses away from the scene.

Warning: The video contains graphic images.

The University of Virginia Health System confirmed that 20 patients were brought to UVA Medical Center and that 19 were being "assessed and treated" in addition to the woman who died. Five of the 19 individuals were listed as being in critical condition as of 7 p.m. Saturday.

Thomas identified the victim only as a 32-year-old woman, and saying her name would not be released until her next of kin were notified.

President Donald Trump tweeted his condolences to the family of the woman Saturday evening, adding his "best regards to all of those injured."

White nationalist rally in Virginia sparks violent clashes, emergency declaration

Charlottesville has become a flashpoint for white nationalists following a City Council vote in February to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from a park formerly called Lee Park.

The park was renamed Emancipation Park in June.
