CLEVELAND -- Police broke up a couple of skirmishes between groups of demonstrators a few blocks from the Republican National Convention as large crowds gathered Tuesday afternoon. There was no immediate word on any arrests or injuries.

A scuffle broke out when conspiracy theorist and radio show host Alex Jones started speaking in downtown's Public Square. Police on bicycles pushed back a surging crowd, and Jones was whisked away.

Minutes later, more officers on bicycles formed a line between an organization supporting the Communist Party and a conservative religious group.

Activists from Black Lives Matter, Westboro Baptist Church and the KKK were in the square and were said to be throwing urine at each other, CBS affiliate WOIO reported.

The crowds and the police presence were some of the largest and most raucous gatherings in downtown Cleveland since the convention got underway Monday.

Earlier Tuesday, officials said 11 members of the planning team for the California delegation to the Republican convention were recovering from a bout of norovirus, or what's commonly known as stomach flu, health officials said. No delegates appeared to be affected.

The symptoms, which can include vomiting and diarrhea, were first reported Thursday as logistics members arrived at a hotel about an hour west of Cleveland ahead of the Republican National Convention, said Pete Schade, Erie County health commissioner.

Those who got sick are keeping themselves isolated in their rooms, Schade said, and the Ohio Health Department is trying to identify the source. Norovirus can be contracted from an infected person, from contaminated food or water, or by touching contaminated surfaces.

Ohio Health Department spokesman Russ Kennedy confirmed there was at least one suspected norovirus case and said the victim was apparently infected before arriving in Ohio, based on when the person fell ill.

Cynthia Bryant, executive director of the California GOP, told delegation members to wash their hands frequently, avoid shaking hands and not to share food.

As the second day of the convention got underway, three people were arrested and charged with criminal mischief for climbing flagpoles outside the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum early in the morning and hanging an anti-Donald Trump banner. Firefighters took it down.

The museum said in statement that while the rock hall is an "icon of free speech," officials discourage "illegal actions that stress our first responders."

Also Tuesday, Cleveland's police chief said 300 officers from more than a dozen law enforcement agencies are patrolling on bicycles in downtown Cleveland during the convention. Supporters of bike patrols say they make officers more maneuverable and less threatening-looking.

On Monday, the first day of rallies outside the convention featured angry words and a small number of demonstrators openly carrying guns as allowed under Ohio law, but none of the violence many feared could erupt in this summer of violence in the U.S. and overseas.

"So far, so good," Police Chief Calvin Williams said Monday evening.

Climbing flagpoles and hanging up the anti-Trump banner, that’s just an intelligent way of making their point and having some fun at the same time. College kids after winning a ballgame do things like that all the time. Finally, about the officers using only bicycles, that’s standard procedure in England, and it’s a good way for officers to establish personal contact with community members, the better to “make peace not war”. Remember that one??

An article yesterday said sadly, that police officers have taken to going on patrol in pairs. Well, that used to be standard procedure. It provides backup and a second set of eyes to check the situation over for trouble. I have said half a dozen or so times that going in pairs will cut down on the number of officers who begin to “fear for their lives,” so that hopefully they will have a lesser tendency to be so afraid that they will shoot a 12 year old kid with a replica gun. In ALL the TV cop shows they ALWAYS go in pairs. It’s just good common sense.

“Activists from Black Lives Matter, Westboro Baptist Church and the KKK were in the square and were said to be throwing urine at each other, CBS affiliate WOIO reported.” I believe demonstrations are basically good as long as they are engaged in a maneuver to make social change rather than start a brawl, but when it comes to “throwing urine” or spitting or throwing eggs or other totally obscene things, whatever psychological value they have is lost in a flood of pure disgust! To make it worse a “conspiracy theorist” took his place on the square to rant about something insane. Unfortunately, too many who call themselves “Conservative” are essentially mentally ill, and definitely Radicals.

Obama pens open letter to America's law enforcement community

As the nation continues to reel from the recent deadly shootings of police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge, President Obama reached out Monday to the law enforcement community seeking to assure them that his administration stood by them.

"Every day, you accept this responsibility and you see your colleagues do their difficult, dangerous jobs with equal valor," Mr. Obama wrote in his letter, posted to the White House website Tuesday. "I want you to know that the American people see it, too. We recognize it, we respect it, we appreciate it, and we depend on you. And just as your tight-knit law enforcement family feels the recent losses to your core, our Nation grieves alongside you. Any attack on police is an unjustified attack on all of us."

The president addressed some of the divisive rhetoric surrounding Black Lives Matter demonstrators, police violence against African Americans, and used the moment once again to urge for a unified front.

"Some are trying to use this moment to divide police and the communities you serve," he wrote. "I reject those efforts, for they do not reflect the reality of our Nation."

Mr. Obama offered the actions of one African American officer who was killed in Baton Rouge this week as an example.

"Officer Jackson knew this," he said, "when just days ago he asked us to keep hatred from our hearts. Instead, he offered--to protestors and fellow police officers alike--a hug to anyone who saw him on the street. He offered himself as a fellow worshipper to anyone who sought to pray."

Of law enforcement officers, the president said he recognized that "we can no longer ask you to solve issues we refuse to address as a society."

"We should give you the resources you need to do your job, including our full-throated support," he said. "We must give you the tools you need to build and strengthen the bonds of trust with those you serve, and our best efforts to address the underlying challenges that contribute to crime and unrest."

"Thank you for your courageous service," the president concluded. "We have your backs."

The National Fraternal Order of Police shared the letter with its Facebook followers, echoing the call for politicians to support law enforcement and the communities they serve.

"The reason this letter has value is that we want and deserve to change the National Dialogue," they said in the social media post.

"We can and do provide the best quality law enforcement that we can but we cannot be held responsible for the social issues such as poverty, lack of mental health services, unemployment, and abject poverty," the police association post continued. "The work now is to assist our communities by continuing to recognize that we are but one spoke in the wheel and we will do our part. Now it's time for politicians and government to assist us in working in the communities we have always worked in to make life better for all Americans."

The letter comes after a week when the president gathered law enforcement officials, community activists, and academics in Washington, D.C. to address the racial disparities in the criminal justice system.

In the days following that summit, the president praised the frank conversations about race as the first steps towards solving the problem.

"We have to be able to talk about these things, honestly and openly, not just in the comfort of our own circles, but with folks who look differently and think differently than we do," he said. "Otherwise, we'll never break this dangerous cycle."

The President has said this several times lately, and he is absolutely right. We really do have to sit down in reasonably small groups in every city in the country to have those “frank and honest discussions,” which must not be shouting matches or personal or racial slurs -- but do it NOW, not next year or next month. There will be no firm progress until a healing of the breach in the human race takes place. More and more heavily armored police officers sent out to “quell” the demonstrations, is no answer. That kind of hostility, rather than meeting each other one to one in genuine respect, compassion and the desire to help is the only thing that will HEAL us.

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback:

“Serving his community, Captain Melton today made the ultimate sacrifice laying down his life in the line of duty,” said Governor Brownback. “Kansans everywhere mourn his loss, grieve with his family, and pray for his fellow brothers and sisters in blue. Every day they risk their lives to protect ours and we are grateful for their service.

"I have spoken with the Mayor to offer any assistance he may need and to express my personal condolences for this loss. I ask all Kansans to take a moment to honor the service of Capt. Melton and all officers across our state and across the nation."

Kansas Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer:

“We honor the courage and service of Capt. Melton,” said Lt. Governor Jeff Colyer, M.D. “We send our thoughts and sympathies to his family and friends. I urge all Kansans to pray for unity and healing as we mourn Capt. Melton.”

Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt:

“For the second time in only 10 short weeks, our hearts are broken by the ultimate sacrifice of a Kansas City, Kansas, police officer. We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with all in the law enforcement community and share in Kansas City’s sorrow. My prayers and deepest sympathies remain with the men and women of the KCK Police Department, with all officers who protect and serve with honor, and with the family and friends of Captain Melton.”

“Police said they have two people in custody. Officials held a news conference about the shooting Tuesday afternoon. Police departments and officials offer prayers, support. Following Zeigler's tweet, multiple local police departments tweeted out their thoughts and prayers for the officer who was shot.” This story does not sound to me like police overkill, as too many do, but simply the dangers of pursuing suspects. It does remind me, though, of the cases of “ambushes” when a group of police or Fire Department personnel are lured into the area and then attacked. That’s pure evil, whatever the skin colors involved.

Did you watch the Republican Convention last night?

We did. And we’re really nervous.

Donald Trump walked out to THUNDEROUS applause and support… and predicted our worst nightmare:

TRUMP: Republicans are "going to win big"

The worst part? It could actually happen.

It’s more clear than ever that we cannot let Trump anywhere near the White House.

A group of all-star Democrats has agreed to match all gifts, but only if we hit $1,OOO,OOO during the GOP Convention!

MILLION DOLLAR MATCH: PENDING

Suggested Support: $4

Will you pitch in $4 now to fight back against Trump and his Republicans?

Subject: Bernie Sanders for Vice President 2016

INSTEAD OF SENDING ME ENDLESS REQUESTS FOR MONEY (I'M POOR, YOU IDIOTS) WHAT I WANT AND, YES, ADVISE YOU TO DO IS GET UP OFF YOUR RESPECTIVE DUFFS AND BESEECH BERNIE SANDERS TO RUN FOR VP IN NOVEMBER. HE'S THE FIRST PERSON IN YEARS NOW TO STAND UP FOR TRULY PROGRESSIVE PRINCIPLES, AND PEOPLE HERE ARE HUNGRY FOR IT.

YOU THINK THAT BY BECOMING MORE AND MORE CAUTIOUS AND MEALY MOUTHED YOU WILL GAIN GROUND. WITH SOME VOTERS THAT MIGHT BE TRUE, BUT YOU WILL ALSO LOSE THOUSANDS OF US WHO HAVE BEEN LOYAL DEMOCRATS SINCE THE 1960S AND 70S. IN ADDITION, STOP TAKING MONEY FROM THE RIGHTIST BUSINESSES LIKE THE KOCH BROTHERS AND COME CLEAN. AS SOMEONE STATED RECENTLY, WE CAN'T BEAT THE REPUBLICANS BY BECOMING REPUBLICANS!!

IF YOU DO NOT MAKE THIS STEP, YOU CAN EXPECT MASSIVE WITHDRAWALS FROM THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY MEMBERSHIP ROSTER AS SOON AS THE ELECTION IS OVER. SOME OF US ARE HOLDING OUT ON THAT BECAUSE THE DRUMPF IS WAITING IN THE WINGS, BUT SOME OF THOSE YOUNG ONES ARE PREPARED TO JUST LET HIM WIN. IF YOU DO ROLL OVER AND PLAY DEAD ON THIS MATTER AS YOU HAVE ON SO MANY OTHER THINGS, I FOR ONE, WILL NO LONGER BE WITH YOU, AND YOU CAN REST ASSURED THAT THE YOUNG PEOPLE WON'T BE.

THE GREEN PARTY AND THE INDEPENDENTS ARE READY AND WAITING FOR US TO COME IN. THE GREEN PARTY LEADER HAS ALREADY PUBLICLY INVITED SANDERS TO RUN IN HER PLACE ON THEIR TICKET. THAT SHOULD TELL YOU SOMETHING.

AFTER YOU HAVE HIS AGREEMENT, ANNOUNCE HIS PLACE ON THE BALLOT AS VP IMMEDIATELY AT A NEWS CONFERENCE, AND THEN AFTER A FEW DAYS TAKE SOME MORE POLLS. I THINK THERE WILL BE A MAJOR CHANGE. OF COURSE THE YOUNGER ONES OF US MAY BE PERMANENTLY ALIENATED, BUT MOST OF US WON'T BE, I DON'T THINK.

BEST TO YOU ALL.
