Sanders backers take over California Democratic Party
BY REID WILSON - 01/19/17 10:20 AM EST

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) turned out en masse at ordinarily sleepy party caucuses earlier this month, electing a slate of delegates who could be poised to take over the largest Democratic Party organization outside of Washington, D.C.

As final vote totals trickled in, Sanders backers claimed to have elected more than 650 delegates out of 1,120 available seats chosen at this month’s caucuses. Those delegates will choose the next state Democratic Party chairman, along with other party officials.

Sanders supporters say they hope to change the very nature of the Democratic Party.

“One of the issues we’re looking to do is transform the party,” said Shannon Jackson, executive director of Our Revolution, the organization that grew out of the Sanders’s presidential campaign. “This is the first step in that process.”

Our Revolution ran an on-the-ground get-out-the-vote effort to make sure supporters attended caucuses in each of the state’s 80 assembly districts. The group sent out more than 100,000 emails and delivered 40,000 text messages, Jackson told The Hill. More than 800 Sanders supporters signed up to run for delegate seats.

Longtime Democratic activists, used to low-turnout caucuses in which only party regulars show up, were stunned by the long lines they faced this year. One party strategist in Sacramento said he waited 45 minutes in line before being able to vote, when he was used to walking in and out in the span of five minutes.

The surge in turnout, and Sanders backers’ success, caught the attention of elected leaders in Sacramento.

“There’s a lot of energy in the party right now. We need to move really quickly to harness this energy,” state Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D) said in an interview, marveling at the turnout in his Los Angeles-area district.

California’s legislature has been at the vanguard of some of the most liberal policy programs in the nation, on everything from climate change to immigrant rights. Sanders supporters hope to leverage their newfound power to convince Democratic majorities in the state Assembly and state Senate to embrace even more aggressive progressive positions.

“This is to basically force the issues that we vote on onto the legislators for action. So it’s a very serious sea change,” said RoseAnn DeMoro, who heads National Nurses United and the California Nurses Association, groups that backed Sanders during his 2016 presidential primary.

The first test of the new Sanders bloc of voters will come in May, when California Democrats choose a replacement for outgoing state party Chairman John Burton. The nurses union backs Kimberly Ellis, a San Francisco-area party activist who runs Emerge California, a group that trains Democratic women to run for office.

Ellis will face Eric Bauman, who heads the Los Angeles Democratic Party and who backed former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election. Sanders’s group has not made an endorsement in the race, though Jackson said Our Revolution would consider weighing in.

California is not the only state in which Sanders backers are trying to take over Democratic parties. The group is also organizing in Florida, Iowa, Colorado and Michigan, Jackson said.

“Hopefully, within a year or two, we’ll have a majority of the states covered,” Jackson said.

The bids to seize control of state Democratic parties is reminiscent of similar moves by fans of former Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), who engineered takeovers of state Republican parties in Nevada and Arizona, among others, after Paul’s bid for president in 2012.

But Democrats find themselves in deeper minorities, both in Congress and in state legislative chambers across the country. The party is poised to elect a new national chair person in February.

Trump speaks with top Dem about high drug prices
BY PETER SULLIVAN - 01/21/17 12:48 PM EST

President Trump told Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) at an inaugural luncheon Friday that the two needed to meet about the high cost of prescription drugs, according to a Cummings aide.

Cummings is one of the most outspoken lawmakers in favor of government action to fight high drug prices. Trump’s apparent willingness to work with him on the issue is a further sign that the new president is upending the usual GOP position against government action on drug prices.

The conversation between Trump and Cummings was first reported by April Ryan of American Urban Radio Networks.

Cummings has repeatedly teamed up with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) to introduce legislation to fight high drug prices. In 2015, the two lawmakers introduced a bill to allow Medicare to negotiate drug prices and encourage the importation of lower-cost drugs from Canada.

Trump has echoed some of those calls himself.

At a press conference earlier this month, Trump attacked pharmaceutical companies and repeated his call for Medicare to negotiate prices, a position most Republican lawmakers oppose.

"The other thing we have to do is create new bidding procedures for the drug industry, because they’re getting away with murder," Trump said then.

"PhRMA, PhRMA has a lot of lobbyists and a lot of power and there’s very little bidding on drugs," he added, calling out the drug companies.

It is unclear, though, what legislation on drug prices could actually get through Congress, given Republican control.

Women's march brings higher Metro ridership than inauguration
BY MAX GREENWOOD - 01/21/17 12:08 PM EST

Washington's Metro says it's seeing higher ridership for Saturday's Women's March on Washington than it saw a day before for President Trump's inauguration.

As of 11 a.m. on Saturday, about 275,000 trips had been taken on the mass transit system, compared to about 193,000 the day before, the agency tweeted.

Trump’s inauguration drew a smaller crowd to the Metro than the past three presidential swearing-in ceremonies. In 2013, former President Barack Obama’s second inaugural event registered 317,000 trips by 11 a.m.

Obama’s first inauguration in 2009 drew even more — about 513,000. And in 2005, during former President George W. Bush’s second inauguration, WMATA counted about 197,000 trips.

The women’s march in D.C. is one of a number of similar demonstrations taking place in 50 states and more than 60 countries on Saturday.

Many protesters are gathered to oppose Trump, who has frequently drawn criticism for making disparaging remarks about women.

President Obama has commuted the sentence of Chelsea Manning, the former Army intelligence analyst who is serving 35 years for giving classified information to WikiLeaks, the White House announced Tuesday.

The decision, made in the last days of Obama's presidency, means that Manning can be freed May 17, seven years into a prison term that has been marked by two suicide attempts and a hunger strike aimed at obtaining sex reassignment surgery.

"I think justice was finally done today," Manning's lawyer, David Coombs, told NBC News. "Thirty-five years was not an appropriate sentence. Seven years is still too long, but at least Chelsea now will be able to return to her life, return to her family and to the people who love her."

In addition to shaving 28 years off Manning's sentence, Obama granted 208 other commutations and 64 pardons — including one for retired Gen. James Cartwright, who was accused of lying to the FBI during another leak investigation.

The Manning commutation, which will undoubtedly be controversial, was not a complete surprise.

NBC News reported last week that she was on the president's short list. And at a briefing last week, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said that Manning's actions were not as "dangerous" as those of fugitive leaker Edward Snowden. Earnest also noted that Manning had answered for her actions in court, and admitted wrongdoing.

More than 117,000 people signed a petition asking the White House to consider the commutation. Snowden, whose supporters had petitioned for clemency, tweeted that if Obama could only free one person, it should be Manning.

WikiLeaks tweeted last week that founder Julian Assange would agree to be extradited to the U.S. if Obama granted clemency to Manning, but the status of that offer was unclear.

White House officials said Wikileaks' statement played no role in the decision. They noted that Manning had accepted responsibility, expressed remorse and served time.

Evan Greer of Fight for the Future, the organization that sponsored the petition, said she was "overjoyed" at the news.

"I think her freedom and this news today is a testament to the power of grassroots organizing," Greer said. "I think Chelsea showed incredible courage herself and that inspired her supporters to persevere even when it seemed like freedom was completely impossible."

House Speaker Paul Ryan called the commutation "outrageous" and said it set "a dangerous precedent that those who compromise our national security won't be held accountable for their crimes."

Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., blasted the decision.

"When I was leading soldiers in Afghanistan, Private Manning was undermining us by leaking hundreds of thousands of classified documents to WikiLeaks," he said.

"I don't understand why the president would feel special compassion for someone who endangered the lives of our troops, diplomats, intelligence officers, and allies. We ought not treat a traitor like a martyr."

Manning — then known as Bradley — was locked up in 2010 after swiping 700,000 military files and diplomatic cables and giving them to WikiLeaks. No document was classified higher than secret and her defenders say no one was endangered by the leaks.

At trial, prosecutors said she was a dangerous traitor, while her lawyers portrayed her as a naive whistleblower. The day after her sentencing, she announced she was a transgender woman.

Three years ago, Manning applied for a presidential pardon and was rejected. In her petition this November to have her sentence commuted, she said she understood her earlier request was "too soon" and "too much."

"I should have waited. I needed time to absorb the conviction, and to reflect on my actions. I also needed time to grow and mature as a person," she wrote.

"I take full and complete responsibility for my decision to disclose these materials to the public. I have never made any excuses for what I did. I pleaded guilty without the protection of a plea agreement because I believed the military justice system would understand my motivation for the disclosure and sentence me fairly. I was wrong."

In her plea to Obama, she said she has not been able to get proper treatment for an anxiety-producing condition called gender dysphoria while incarcerated at the military prison in Leavenworth, Kansas.

"The bottom-line is this: I need help and I am still not getting it. I am living through a cycle of anxiety, anger, hopelessness, loss, and depression. I cannot focus. I cannot sleep. I attempted to take my own life," she wrote in her petition.

A PROPHECY? MICHAEL MOORE: "As bad as we know it's going to be, it's actually going to be worse. A lot worse," Moore said about the Trump presidency.”

http://insider.foxnews.com/2016/12/28/michael-moore-five-ways-keep-donald-trump-out-office

December 28, 2016

Filmmaker Michael Moore is calling for mass demonstrations and disruptions to the Jan. 20 inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.

The outspoken liberal filmmaker suggested on Facebook his "5 Things You Can Do Right Now About Donald J. Trump," outlining a plan for sustained resistance to Trump's agenda.

The five steps were:

1) Making your presence known.

2) Writing to the DNC.

3) Forming your own rapid response team.

4) Attending the inauguration weekend protests.

5) Running for office yourself.

Moore called Trump's victory a "mindf**k," since Hillary Clinton received nearly 3 million more votes.

"As bad as we know it's going to be, it's actually going to be worse. A lot worse," Moore said about the Trump presidency.

Moore called on his followers to attend mass demonstrations in Washington D.C. during the Jan. 20 inauguration.

He called for civil disobedience and for protesters to non-violently disrupt the 58th Presidential Inauguration.

Tell us what you think of Moore's call to action in the comments section.

TRUMP HAS MADE THE MISTAKE OF ATTACKING BLACKS, BROWNS, ISLAMIC BELIEVERS, THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY, AND OTHERS, AND NOW ALL OF THEM ARE VERY ANGRY AT HIM – TRULY “PO” STYLE ANGRY. NOBODY REALLY THINKS THAT THE INTERFERENCE OF THE RUSSIANS IN HILLARY’S CAMPAIGN WAS DONE WITHOUT THE COOPERATION OF TRUMP HIMSELF, AND I THINK WE’LL SEE MORE ABOUT THAT LATER – UNLESS HE MANAGES TO BLOCK CONGRESS AND THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT FROM INVESTIGATING FURTHER, THAT IS. EVERY TIME A NEWS REPORT BLAMES HIM FOR ANYTHING AT ALL LATELY, HE CRIES OUT “FAKE NEWS!!” NOW THE BIRTHER STORY THAT TRUMP SPREAD BROADLY, AND AT LEAST ONE REPORT SAID HE STARTED THE RUMOR, THAT WAS A TRUE CASE OF “FAKE NEWS.” REPORTING TRUMP’S INDISCRETIONS IS NOT.

TODAY’S DISQUIETING DEMONSTRATIONS CAPTURED IN THE VIDEO BELOW REMIND ME OF THOSE IN CITIES ACROSS THE WHOLE COUNTRY THAT TERRIBLE DAY WHEN MARTIN LUTHER KING WAS KILLED. DID TRUMP’S PEOPLE SNATCH THE INFORMATION AS CLAIMED?

SNOPES -- CLAIM: Donald Trump removed the terms "LGBT" and "climate change" from the White House web site.

MIXTURE

WHAT'S TRUE: The terms "LGBT" and "climate change" were absent from WhiteHouse.gov immediately after Inauguration Day 2017.

WHAT'S FALSE: The majority of content on WhiteHouse.gov was transferred to ObamaWhiteHouse.gov on Inauguration Day, and the terms "LGBT" and "climate change" were not specifically removed by Donald Trump.

ORIGIN: As Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the United States on 20 January 2017, many people noticed some considerable changes to the official White House web site at WhiteHouse.gov web site, such as the seeming removal of the terms "LGBT" and "climate change":

It is true that searching for these terms immediately after the inauguration returned no related results:

However, it's inaccurate to say that these terms were specifically scrubbed from the site by Donald Trump. On 17 January 2017, WhiteHouse.gov issued an announcement explaining the digital transition that would take place on Inauguration Day. For instance, all of the messages posted by Barack Obama under the @POTUS handle on Twitter were transferred to a new @POTUS44 account, giving Donald Trump the opportunity to take over the previous presidential Twitter account @POTUS.

In the same way, the content related to the Obama administration on WhiteHouse.gov was migrated to a new web site, ObamaWhiteHouse.Archives.gov:

Content regarding the terms "LGBT" and "climate change" are still readily available on ObamaWhiteHouse.gov.

As of this writing, Whitehouse.gov is sparsely populated. Its blog currently hosts one post (about the inaugural address), while pages for Press Briefings, Statements, Nominations, and Presidential Actions are all blank:

One of the new pages that has since gone up up on Whitehouse.gov (titled "An America First Energy Plan") suggests that the Trump administration will be targeting previous climate initiatives in order to help boost domestic oil and gas industries:

Interior Department reactivates Twitter accounts after shutdown following inauguration

The Interior Department reactivated its official Twitter accounts early Saturday after an abrupt shutdown following two shares of tweets that were unsympathetic to President Trump during his inauguration.

Thomas Crosson, a spokesman for the National Park Service, the Interior agency whose employee retweeted the offending tweets, said the action was “inconsistent with the agency’s approach to engaging the public through social media.”

“The Department of Interior’s communications team determined that it was important to stand down Twitter activity across the Department temporarily, except in the case of public safety,” Crosson said in an email.

“Now that social media guidance has been clarified, the Department and its bureaus should resume Twitter engagement as normal this weekend.” With one exception, Crosson said: No social media posts on the policy priorities of the new Interior secretary, because Trump nominee Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-Mont.) has not yet been confirmed.

It’s safe to assume that the Park Service won’t be estimating the crowd size of Saturday’s Women’s March on Twitter.

The reinstatement capped a frantic day of tweets, retweets and internal memos to contain the damage after an employee in the social media division apparently risked embarrassing the new administration.

But the incident made the Park Service a hero to some Americans who don’t like Trump. “The National Park Service’s Twitter Has Gone Rogue” someone tweeted Saturday. Others defended the agency for telling the public the truth.

The first share was of a tweet noting the new president’s relatively small inaugural crowd compared with the number of people Barack Obama drew to the Mall when he was sworn into office in 2009. The second missive was about several omissions of policy areas on the new White House website.

“All bureaus and the department have been directed by incoming administration to shut down Twitter platforms immediately until further notice,” said an email circulated to thousands of Interior employees.

[From Obama to Trump: How the inaugurations looked in 2009 and 2017]

The email, obtained by The Washington Post, described the stand-down as an “urgent directive” and said social media managers must shut down the accounts “until further directed.”

Interior has dozens of official Twitter accounts at its multiple offices and 10 bureaus, which include the Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Geological Survey.

The shared crowd tweet from New York Times reporter Binyamin Appelbaum (@BCAppelbaum) pictured the mass of attendees at Obama’s inauguration next to Friday’s gathering on the Mall.

“Compare the crowds: 2009 inauguration at left, 2017 inauguration at right,” Appelbaum wrote. The second tweet came from another Twitter user with a message about climate change, civil rights and health-care issues being removed from the Obama White House website.

A government official familiar with the stand-down said the agency needed to investigate whether the retweets were purposeful, “errant” or “whether we’ve been hacked.”

The Park Service tweeting ban was first reported by Gizmodo.com.

A retweet is a sharing of another person’s tweet. Seen straightforwardly, it’s a way to share an interesting piece of information. In the government’s case, the agency doing the retweeting must have a policy that agrees with the information.

In this case, the Park Service didn’t. Or someone was nervous that the retweets would be seen as endorsements of a relatively low crowd estimate and rankle the new Trump administration.

Crosson declined to say whether the Park Service employee had been identified. But the offending shares from @NatlParkService were removed from the agency’s Twitter feed.

Crosson said that it is against Park Service policy to estimate the size of crowds at events, because they are often inaccurate.

“Due to the difficulty in accurately assessing crowd estimates for large events, most notably following 1995’s Million Man March, the National Park Service no longer makes it a practice to provide crowd estimates for permitted events,” he said in an email.

“While we make internal estimates for staffing, security and emergency response purposes, it is left to the discretion of event organizers to make a determination of the event attendance.”

The Interior Department was ordered Friday to shut down its official Twitter accounts — indefinitely — after the National Park Service shared two unsympathetic tweets during President Trump’s inauguration.

The first noted the new president’s relatively small inaugural crowd compared to the number of people former president Barack Obama drew to the National Mall when he was sworn into office in 2009. The second tweet noted several omissions of policy areas on the new White House website. A Park Service employee retweeted both missives on Friday.

“All bureaus and the department have been directed by incoming administration to shut down Twitter platforms immediately until further notice,” said an email circulated to Park Service employees Friday afternoon.

The email, obtained by The Post, described the stand-down as an “urgent directive” and said social media managers must shut down the accounts “until further directed.”

Interior has dozens of official Twitter accounts at its multiple offices and 10 bureaus, which include the Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Geological Survey.

As Trump’s inauguration ceremony got underway Friday, a Park Service employee involved in social media officially retweeted a tweet from New York Times reporter Binyamin Appelbaum (@BCAppelbaum) that pictured the crowd at Obama’s inauguration next to Friday’s gathering on the Mall.

“Compare the crowds: 2009 inauguration at left, 2017 inauguration at right,” Appelbaum wrote. The Park Service Twitter account then shared a second tweet from someone else with a message about climate change, civil rights and healthcare issues being removed from the Obama White House website.

A government official familiar with the stand-down said the agency is investigating whether the retweets were purposeful, “errant” or “whether we’ve been hacked.”

“They were not reflective of Park Service policy,” said the official, who requested anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the directive. The stand-down was “precautionary” until the agency completes a review of its Twitter accounts, the official said.

It was unclear who at Interior made the decision to ban tweeting for now. The agency is being led temporarily by a team of career civil servants while the Senate considers Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-Mont.), Trump’s nominee for secretary.

It was unclear Friday if the retweeting Park Service employee had been identified. But the offending shares from @NatlParkService had been removed from the agency’s Twitter feed.

National Park Service spokesman Thomas Crosson declined to comment on the tweeting ban. But he said that it is against Park Service policy to estimate the size of crowds at events, because they are often inaccurate.

Donald Trump inauguration: US civil rights history deleted from White House website under new President

The page has been deleted and none of the new webpages under Donald Trump appear to give any reference to the US civil rights movement

The White House’s webpage on civil rights has been deleted, just hours after Donald Trump was inaugurated as President.

Previously a page marking the history of civil rights in the US the page has now been removed. The page appears to have been replaced by one entitled ‘Standing Up For Our Law Enforcement Community’ which states there is a “dangerous anti-police atmosphere in America” as well as a “tide of lawlessness associated with illegal immigration”.

The move will risk infuriating more of his predecessor’s supporters, as Mr Obama’s election as the first African American President is considered a major milestone in civil rights progress in the US.

Trump: 'America first, America first'

No new page on civil rights appears to have been posted elsewhere on the site as a replacement for the old webpage.

The new webpage states: ”One of the fundamental rights of every American is to live in a safe community. A Trump Administration will empower our law enforcement officers to do their jobs and keep our streets free of crime and violence. The Trump Administration will be a law and order administration. President Trump will honor our men and women in uniform and will support their mission of protecting the public. The dangerous anti-police atmosphere in America is wrong. The Trump Administration will end it.”

It continues: “President Trump is committed to building a border wall to stop illegal immigration, to stop the gangs and the violence, and to stop the drugs from pouring into our communities. He is dedicated to enforcing our border laws, ending sanctuary cities, and stemming the tide of lawlessness associated with illegal immigration.

“Supporting law enforcement also means deporting illegal aliens with violent criminal records who have remained within our borders.”

The webpage is one of a number which has been deleted from the White House website immediately after Mr Trump assumed office. Other pages include those on climate change and LGBT issues, other topics with which Mr Obama was closely associated during his presidency and which his successor has been deeply critical of.

Mr Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the United States in the traditional ceremony, accompanied by his family. He told supporters: Today we are not merely transferring power from one administration to another- but transferring it from Washington DC and giving it back to you the people.

“For too long a small group in our nation's capital has reaped the rewards of government while the people have borne the cost.

”Washington flourished but the people did not share in its wealth. Politicians prospered but the jobs left and the factories closed.

During Barack Obama’s presidency, if you typed whitehouse.gov/lgbt into your browser, you reached a page highlighting the administration’s victories and policy changes regarding LGBT rights. It outlined historic court victories and even featured campaigns like the It Gets Better Project to help LGBT youth.

Today, however -- just hours after President Donald J. Trump took the oath of office as the United States’ 45th president -- if you type in whitehouse.gov/lgbt, you are redirected to a new “transitionsplash” page.

The new page simply invites people to “sign up for updates from President Donald J. Trump.” It makes no mention of LGBT rights. In fact, it appears the White House’s LGBT rights feed has disappeared completely.

Vice President Mike Pence is, of course, a highly controversial figure among the LGBT community. He publicly opposed the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. He famously voted against The Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which would have prohibited discrimination against LGBT people in the workplace. And he spoke out against gay marriage; arguing in a 2006 speech that “societal collapse was always brought about following an advent of the deterioration of marriage and family.”

Donald Trump, however, was endorsed by the Log Cabin Republicans in October 2016; the top LGBT Republican group calling him “perhaps the most pro-LGBT presidential nominee in the history of the Republican Party.”

So, while it’s unclear whether the White House’s LGBT rights page will ultimately be replaced by a new feed with the mark of this new presidency, many Americans view the disappearance of the former page as an unsettling sign of things to come.

When the White House transitions from one president to the next, both its social media accounts and its digital assets -- like this LGBT rights page -- undergo a transition as well. As part of that, all content posted on the WhiteHouse.gov webpage during Obama’s presidency has been moved to ObamaWhiteHouse.gov.

So, technically, the White House LGBT rights page being discussed here still exists. It’s just no longer on the official White House website.

All climate change references deleted from WhiteHouse.gov as new chapter begins

“We are working to ensure that the next president and administration -- regardless of party -- can continue to use and develop the digital assets we have created to connect directly with the people they serve,” Kori Schulman, the White House’s deputy director of digital strategy, explained of the process in a blog on October 31, 2016.

The question now becomes whether or not the absence of an official White House LGBT rights page is temporary or permanent.

ABOUT THOSE SAFETY PINS, WHAT’S WITH THAT? YOU CAN TELL I’M OLD. SEE THIS ARTICLE BELOW FOR THE GIST.

CRYSTAL LEWIS2 MONTHS AGO
Why Are People Of Color Upset About The Safety Pins People Are Wearing Post-Trump?

Ever since Donald Trump's election, people have begun wearing safety pins. The safety pins symbolize that the wearer is an ally to women, the LGBT community, immigrants, and people of color who are afraid of what Donald Trump's presidency will mean for them. But as much as the media is trying to make it seem like everyone is in on this movement, let's face it: like eating rice crackers, this is a white people thing. For people of color, the safety pins aren't actually a helpful way to help marginalized groups. Here's why people of color are upset about the safety pins people are wearing post-Trump.

Over at The Huffington Post, Christopher Keelty explained that the safety pins do little more than "making white people feel better." He argues that the pins allow white people to think of themselves as allies even though they're doing nothing to help marginalized groups.

People in the comments have defended the pins against the belief that they are a sign of white privilege. One person wrote in the comments that she didn't vote for Trump, but will "wear that freaking safety pin, proudly, without guilt," because she has family members who are gay, biracial, or have special needs. OK, from this point, I'm going to talk to the cis, straight white people out there — the "allies" who are truly defending these pins. So, wearing the pin shows support for people you know and love who are marginalized. Sure. But how does wearing the pin help your Muslim friend when she's being harassed? How does having a safety pin keep your African-American friends from being threatened with violence? It doesn't.

Other people have questioned why the pins represent white privilege because everyone, not just whites, can wear them, and, those people are seriously missing the point. The safety pins (or the fact that you were able to shell out a whopping $4 for a pack of 200 of them) aren't a privilege — your white skin is the privilege. The fact that you don't have to face taunts of "go back to your country!" that people with brown skin (whether they're immigrants or not) have had to deal with since Trump's election is the proof of your privilege. You haven't been harassed because you're gay, or black, or whatever else that makes you a walking target.

The pins are supposed to be a sign for people of color, women, LGBT people and immigrants that you are a "safe space" they can go to if they are being harassed. But what if a person in need mistakes someone wearing a safety pin as an ally when they were wearing a pin simply to hold their shirt in place? Or what about if Trump supporters start wearing the pins to pretend to be allies? And, as activists have noted, why is the sign that you're an ally so quiet? Wouldn't it be more helpful to actually, say, write, volunteer, donate, or scream that you're an ally rather than to have to search for a tiny pin somewhere on your body?

And I hate to say this. But all of this attention being paid to safety pins is a way to make an issue that will predominately hurt people of color about white people.

So if you must wear the safety pins because you believe in the message behind it, go ahead. But that cannot be where your role as an ally stops. When you see your gay or immigrant or Muslim friend being bullied, you intervene. Stand up for them. Go to protests against Trump or people who condone his rhetoric about Mexican immigrants, Muslims, and women. Taking action is the main step that actually matters to us, because it can make a difference. Because a symbol of solidarity is just that: a symbol.

WASHINGTON -- Protesters registered their rage against the new president Friday in a chaotic confrontation with police who used pepper spray and stun grenades in a melee just blocks from Donald Trump’s inaugural parade route. Scores were arrested for trashing property and attacking officers.

Officers arrested 217 protesters, CBS affiliate WUSA reports. Six police officers were hurt during the protests, including three who were hit in the head with flying objects. All of them have minor injuries.

A video on social media shows District of Columbia police pepper-spraying a group of protesters - including an elderly woman and a man on crutches, as well as those trying to help them to move out of the way.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police Department declined to immediately provide comment. It was unclear what happened just before the video began.

The video shows a woman screaming “my child” as she runs with her crying son in her arms. Others are hunched over or coughing as plumes of pink spray waft over hundreds of people in the street. Toward the end of the video, protesters appear to be breaking up cement blocks and some people are seen throwing objects toward police.

Several spirited demonstrations unfolded peacefully at various security checkpoints near the Capitol as police helped ticket-holders get through to the inaugural ceremony. Signs read, “Resist Trump Climate Justice Now,” ‘’Let Freedom Ring,” ‘’Free Palestine.”

But about a mile from the National Mall, police gave chase to a group of about 100 protesters who smashed the windows of downtown businesses including a Starbucks, a Bank of America, a Wells Fargo and a McDonald’s as they denounced capitalism and Mr. Trump. Police in riot gear used pepper spray from large canisters and eventually cordoned off protesters at 12th and L streets in northwest Washington.

The confrontation began an hour before Mr. Trump took the oath of office and escalated several hours later as the crowd of protesters swelled to more than 1,000, some wearing gas masks and with arms chained together inside PVC pipe. One said the demonstrators were “bringing in the cavalry.”

When some crossed police lines, taunting, “Put the pigs in the ground,” police charged with batons and pepper spray, as well as stun grenades, which are used to shock and disperse crowds. Loud booms echoed through the streets about six blocks from where Mr. Trump would hold his inaugural parade.

Some protesters picked up bricks and concrete from the sidewalk and hurled them at police lines. Some rolled large, metal trash cans at police.

At 13th and K streets, police moved in on a crowd after a limo was set on fire, CBS News homeland security correspondent Jeff Pegues reports. The fire department responded to the blaze and put it out.

Pegues didn’t see anyone injured at the scene. After the police moved in, some in the crowd removed bricks from the ground and threw them at officers, Pegues reports.

According to a police spokesman, around 95 people had been arrested by 2 p.m., CBS News senior investigative producer Pat Milton reports. The charges include rioting and vandalism.

Two officers were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, Milton reports.

Police said in a statement that the group damaged vehicles, destroyed property and set small fires while armed with crowbars and hammers. Peter Newsham, the interim police chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, said the group caused “significant damage” along a number of blocks.

Before Inauguration Day, the DisruptJ20 coalition, named after the date of the inauguration, had promised that people participating in its actions in Washington would attempt to shut down the celebrations, risking arrest when necessary.

Earlier in the day, as guests were going in to the ceremony, lines for ticket-holders entering two gates stretched for blocks at one point as protesters clogged entrances.

Trump supporter Brett Ecker said the protesters were frustrating but weren’t going to put a damper on his day.

“They’re just here to stir up trouble,” said the 36-year-old public school teacher. “It upsets me a little bit that people choose to do this, but yet again, it’s one of the things I love about this country.”

At one checkpoint, protesters wore orange jumpsuits with black hoods over their faces to represent prisoners in U.S. detention at Guantanamo Bay. Eleanor Goldfield, who helped organize the Disrupt J20 protest, said protesters wanted to show Mr. Trump and his “misguided, misinformed or just plain dangerous” supporters that they won’t be silent.

Black Lives Matter and feminist groups also made their voices heard.

Most Trump supporters walking to the inauguration past Union Station ignored protesters outside the train station, but not Doug Rahm, who engaged in a lengthy and sometimes profane yelling match with them. “Get a job,” said Rahm, a Bikers for Trump member from Philadelphia. “Stop crying, snowflakes, Trump won.”

Outside the International Spy Museum, protesters in Russian hats ridiculed Mr. Trump’s praise of President Vladimir Putin, marching with signs calling Mr. Trump “Putin’s Puppet” and “Kremlin employee of the month.”

Demonstrations in Washington were not the only ones Friday. In San Francisco, thousands of demonstrators formed a human chain on the Golden Gate Bridge and chanted “Love Trumps hate.” In the city’s financial district, a few hundred protesters blocked traffic outside an office building partly owned by Mr. Trump.

In Atlanta, protests converged at City Hall and a few hundred people chanted and waved signs protesting Mr. Trump, denouncing racism and police brutality and expressing support for immigrants, Muslims and the Black Lives Matter movement.

In New York, Democratic Councilman Jumaane Williams and other protesters were arrested outside Trump Tower in Manhattan after sitting on Fifth Avenue. Other demonstrators chanted loudly but the event remained peaceful.

And in Nashville, half a dozen protesters chained themselves to the doors of the Tennessee Capitol. Hundreds also sat in a 10-minute silent protest at a park while Mr. Trump took the oath of office. Organizers led a prayer, sang patriotic songs and read the Declaration of Independence aloud.

In Washington, the “Festival of Resistance” march ran about 1.5 miles to McPherson Square, a park about three blocks from the White House, where a rally featured the filmmaker and liberal activist Michael Moore.

“We have to perform an intervention,” Moore said, according to CBS affiliate WUSA-TV. “It helps us that he has such a thin skin. He can’t stand the fact that people don’t like him. He wants to be loved.”

Friday’s protests weren’t the first of the inauguration. On Thursday night, protesters and Trump supporters clashed outside a pro-Trump event in Washington. Police used chemical spray on some protesters in an effort to control the unruly crowd.

The demonstrations won’t end when Mr. Trump takes up residence in the White House. A massive Women’s March on Washington is planned for Saturday. Christopher Geldart, the District of Columbia’s homeland security director, has said 1,800 buses have registered to park in the city Saturday, which could mean nearly 100,000 people coming in just by bus.

Moore Calls for Civil Disobedience, Disruption of Trump's Inauguration
As seen on Fox & Friends
by Fox News Insider
December 28,2016

'Comey acted in an outrageous way during the campaign': Bernie Sanders suggests FBI director should resign
Maxwell Tani
Jan. 15, 2017, 10:27 AM

Sen. Bernie Sanders suggested FBI Director James Comey should resign over how he conducted the FBI's investigation of Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while serving as secretary of state.

"He should take a hard look at what he has done. And I think it would not be a bad thing for the American people if he did step down," Sanders told ABC's "This Week" on Sunday.

Sanders argued that Comey was wrong to publicize the new evidence about Clinton about a week before the general election in November, only to announce days later that it did not change the department's previous decision not to charge the former secretary of state for mishandling classified information.

"Comey acted in an outrageous way during the campaign," Sanders said. "No one can say that this was the decisive and this was what elected Trump, but clearly his behavior during the campaign in terms of what he said in the week or two before the election was unacceptable. And it is interesting that he is not doing investigations about the possible ties between Trump's campaign and the Russians."

Sanders comments came just days after the FBI's independent internal watchdog, the Office of the Inspector General, announced it would review Comey's actions and rule whether there was misconduct in the way the department handled Clinton's email investigation.

After the election, Clinton herself partially blamed Comey for her loss to President-elect Donald Trump.

"There are lots of reasons why an election like this is not successful," Clinton said on a call with donors in November. She added: "Our analysis is that Comey’s letter raising doubts that were groundless, baseless, proven to be, stopped our momentum."

Indeed, on Thursday many of the former secretary of state's top campaign staffers heralded the OIG's move to examine Comey's conduct.

"We need the FBI to be independent, to not have a reputation for behaving in a partisan manner, but I think that all of that was really called in the question in the way that the FBI handled this matter in the closing weeks of the campaign," former Clinton press secretary Brian Fallon told MSNBC last week.
