Donald Trump just claimed he invented 'fake news'

(CNN)Donald Trump has a grandiose view of himself and his centrality to, well, everything.
He is the first mover. He comes up with things. Like the idea of putting the words "fake" and "news" together.
"The media is really, the word, one of the greatest of all terms I've come up with, is 'fake,'" Trump told Mike Huckabee in an interview for the two-time Republican presidential candidate's new show on the Trinity Broadcasting Network. "I guess other people have used it perhaps over the years but I've never noticed it. And it's a shame. And they really hurt the country. Because they take away the spirit of the country."
This is not satire. Even though it does sound exactly like Dr. Evil's memory of his father in "Austin Powers": "He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark."
It's not entirely clear from the quote above whether Trump is claiming that he invented the word "fake" or just that he was the first person to use the phrase "fake news."
Either way, he's wrong.
The word "fake" originates in the early 19th century. "'Fake,' in the sense of something being bogus or counterfeit, apparently began life a little over 200 years ago among the 'flash' language used by criminals in 18th- and 19th-century England," according to this totally-fascinating Mental Floss piece in March 2017.
Trump is on slightly stronger footing if he is claiming that he popularized the term "fake news." But he isn't really saying that. He's saying he came up with it. Which he didn't.
"Fake news appears to have begun seeing general use at the end of the 19th century," according to Merriam Webster -- citing several references to "fake news" in newspapers in 1890 and 1891.
But Trump may well be responsible for dictionary.com's decision to add the term "fake news" this fall. The definition? "False news stories, often of a sensational nature, created to be widely shared online for the purpose of generating ad revenue via web traffic or discrediting a public figure, political movement, company, etc."
That definition does not really cover the way Trump uses the phrase. Trump calls things "fake news" not because they are, in fact, fake, but rather because he doesn't agree with them or they paint him in a bad light.
That is something very different from what we now know Russia did in the 2016 election when the foreign agents purposely created totally made-up "news" stories to drive voters away from Hillary Clinton and toward Trump.
Does Trump know the difference? Probably. Does he care? Almost certainly not.
Either way, Trump didn't create the phrase "fake news." Which makes his boast to Huckabee fake news.
BERNIE’S PLAN OF ENCOURAGING HIS SUPPORTERS TO RUN FOR OFFICE FROM THE LOCAL TO THE STATE AND NATIONAL LEVELS IS SHOWING AT LEAST SOME IMPROVEMENT IN THE NATIONAL SITUATION. SANDERS ISN’T POPULAR JUST BECAUSE HE IS AN EXTREMELY GIFTED AND POWERFUL SPEAKER, BUT BECAUSE HIS IDEAS ARE GOOD AND HUMANE. “DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISM” IS THE WAY WE HELP THOSE WHO HAVE DIFFICULTIES COMPETING IN THE LAW OF THE JUNGLE WORLD THAT WE HAVE SET UP IN THE USA. MANY PEOPLE AROUND THE COUNTRY LIKE HIM -- NOT JUST THE DIE-HARDS. I THINK WE’LL SEE MORE OF THIS NOW.

So how did the Bernie Sanders-style progressive movement fare in Tuesday’s special Assembly election in Los Angeles?
Great. Or, maybe not so great. It all depends on how you look at it.
The question matters in this progressive stronghold of northeast and east-side Los Angeles neighborhoods that strongly favored Sen. Bernie Sanders in the presidential primary last year, yet leaned toward traditional party candidates in a recent special election for Congress.
At the surface, it appears like a straight-up victory for the progressive arm of California’s Democratic party, which has been gaining power since Sanders’ presidential run last year — and came close to winning the chairmanship of the state Democratic Party a few months ago. Both of the top two vote getters in the race for this legislative seat have legitimate progressive claims.
Wendy Carrillo is the front-runner at the moment with 21% of the vote. (Ballots are still being counted, but with such low turnout it is unlikely it will change the projected winners.) She was one of a handful of “Berniecrats” who ran unsuccessfully this spring to replace Xavier Becerra in Congress after he was appointed state attorney general. Coming in second with 19% of the vote is Luis Lopez, a Planned Parenthood board member who also swings progressive, supporting issues such as single-payer healthcare and curbs on corporate money in politics. He also had the distinction of being endorsed by the East Area Progressive Democrats club.

Yet both Carrillo and Lopez have “establishment” connections as well. Carrillo’s race was supported by an expenditure of $314,000 by the Service Employees International Union. SEIU is influential in the state Democratic Party. And Lopez supported Hillary Clinton in the presidential primary.
Meanwhile, another, and perhaps “purer” progressive candidate, Ron Birnbaum, came in just fifth (again, so far) in this contest despite the support of the California Nurses Assn., one of the unions pushing the state party left especially in regard to single-payer healthcare, as well the endorsement of the Feel the Bern Democratic Club of Los Angeles. He received about 10% of the vote, which was not enough to get him in the Dec. 5 runoff but still an impressive showing for a doctor who only jumped into local politics less than a year ago.
Perhaps this was not the decisive victory the progressive movement hoped for. But it seems to me that when the candidates in a safe Democratic seat are working hard to out-Bernie each other that’s a win nonetheless.
A LITTLE MORE ABOUT BERNIE SANDERS AND HIS BIG BROTHER

Larry Sanders (politician)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lawrence Sanders (born 25 April 1935)[1][2] is an American-British academic, social worker, and Health Spokesperson of the Green Party of England and Wales. Sanders is the elder brother of United States Senator and 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.
Early life, education, and family
Larry Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Dorothy (born Glassberg) and Eli Sanders.[3][4] Sanders' father was a Jewish immigrant whose family was killed in the Holocaust,[3][5][6] while his mother was born in New York City, to Jewish immigrant parents, on 2 October 1912.[7][8][9] His father Eli – born in Słopnice, Galicia, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now part of modern-day Poland) on 19 September 1904[10] – emigrated from his birthplace to America in 1921 aged 17,[11][12] and supported his family by selling paint.[13] Sanders describes his childhood as his family never lacking for food or clothing, but major purchases, "like curtains or a rug", being difficult to afford.[13] Sanders' mother died in June 1959 at the age of 46.[6] Sanders' father later died on 4 August 1962, at the age of 57.[10] Both he and his younger brother attended James Madison High School in Brooklyn.[14] Sanders described both of them as post-World War II, young Jewish radicals, but were part of the crowd, not yet leaders.[15]
Sanders attended Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, received his J.D. degree from Harvard Law School and obtained a master's degree in social work from the University of Oxford.[16]
Sanders migrated to the United Kingdom in 1968[17] or 1969.[18][19] He became a university lecturer at the University of West London, then at Oxford in the department of social administration.[20] He was an employee and trustee of the Oxfordshire Carers' Forum and Oxfordshire Community Care Rights from 1996.[citation needed]
His son, Jacob Edward "Jake" Sanders (born 26 November 1968), was elected to Oxford City Council in 2000, and was a Green Party parliamentary candidate in the Oxford East constituency at the 2005 general election.
Political career[edit]
Sanders was active in the Labour Party in Oxford in the 1980s.[20] He left the Labour Party in 2001 because he felt that it had moved too far to the right under Tony Blair, and defected to the Green Party as a result.[21]
First elected in 2005, Sanders was a Green Party county councillor representing the East Oxford division in the Oxfordshire County Council, until he retired from the Council in 2013.[22][23] His main focuses in county politics were social and health care services. He resigned from the board of the Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust in October 2005 in a principled stand amid concerns that proposed cuts to services would leave vulnerable patients at greater risk.[citation needed]
He became chairman of the Oxford Community School's Board of Governors in September 2009, following the resignation of the previous chairman, Chris Ballinger, and six other board members.[24] In December of the same year, the Department for Children, Schools and Families approved an application by Oxfordshire County Council to disband the Board of Governors and replace them with an interim executive board. On hearing the decision, Sanders stated that he was "dreadfully disappointed".[25]
Sanders ran as a Green Party candidate for Oxford West and Abingdon in the 2015 British general election and came in fifth place, receiving 2,497 votes, or 4.4% of the overall vote.[19][26]
In February 2016 he was appointed Health Spokesperson of the Green Party of England and Wales.[27]
Sanders was elected as a pledged delegate for Bernie Sanders to the 2016 Democratic National Convention at the Democrats Abroad Global Convention in Berlin in May 2016. He tearfully spoke at the convention on 26 July of his intention to cast his vote for his brother.[28]
Sanders was selected as the Green Party candidate for the Witney by-election following former Prime Minister David Cameron's resignation as an MP in September 2016.[29] He finished in fourth place with 1,363 votes (3.54%).[30] He was selected for Oxford East in the 2017 general election.[31]

What Happens In Vegas
October 6, 2017
Today when I went out to do my steps, it was after seeing President Trump speak at the Las Vegas Police Department in the aftermath of that city’s unspeakable atrocity. My heart was heavy when I went outside, and even though the autumn sun was shining brightly, I found no solace in it. And then I remembered a song by Glen Campbell, may he rest in peace. I’m sure that if I wrote the lyrics into this blog, someone would come chasing after me to let me know that I had violated a copyright. So I’m not copying down the words to Let Me Be A Little Kinder, but I’m including a link: Let Me Be A Little Bit Kinder lyrics.
And as I walked and hummed and worked my way back through those simple lyrics, I remembered a kinder gentler time when we spent our evenings watching variety shows on our old black and white TV sets. Back then Glen Campbell’s music was always … well … Gentle on My Mind. In those days there wasn’t a relentless twenty-four hour news cycle with people from one side of the fence or the other yelling at one another and absolutely refusing to see any validity in the other person’s point of view.
And so, walking and singing, I found myself thinking about those thousands of concert goers, standing as one with their phone flashlights pointed skyward and with their voices raised together singing God Bless America! At the time they sang those words, none of them had any inkling of the tragedy that would befall them little more than an hour.
Those people were truly innocents at the slaughter. And yet, in the ungodly reign of terror that followed, ordinary men and women showed extraordinary courage. They put themselves in harm’s way, saving loved ones and saving complete strangers. They lifted a wheelchair bound woman down from a raised dais where she would surely have died. They lifted one another over fences; dragged people to safety; loaded people into cars and trucks to take them to hospitals, all the while binding wounds, supplying first aid, and giving comfort.
And the cops! Oh my, oh my as Detective Joe Kenda would say. They went into the face of death when others were fleeing for their lives. There were no safe spaces for them, and they stood their ground. They guided victims to safety. For the people trapped in that killing field, the ordeal of death and destruction must have lasted forever, but it was only ELEVEN minutes from the time the first shots were fired before police officers broke into the room and found the shooter dead by his own hand. ELEVEN MINUTES!! And how did they locate him that fast? They were aided by alert people on the ground who helped triangulate and identify his exact location.
It is difficult to fathom such evil. My heart aches for the people who have lost loved ones forever and for patients still in hospitals dealing with life changing injuries. I hurt for the people who, on a seemingly carefree night of music and fun, were caught up in that horrific nightmare where, out of nowhere, the person seated next to them suddenly took a bullet in his head. Those scenes will be forever etched in survivors’ hearts and minds. They will never go away.
President Trump said that, as a nation, we’ll all be dealing with the aftermath of this event for a very long time, but for the people who were there on the ground—the survivors; the first responders; the cops; the crime scene investigators; the overwhelmed doctors and nurses at the hospitals—those folks will be carrying the bulk of this burden for the remainder of their lives.
The point of terrorism is to terrify us—to get us to go home, lock the door, hide in the closet, climb under the bed, and stay there. Terrorists want us to forget about doing the things we love to do or being the people we want to be. They want us to be afraid.
Let’s not let what happens in Vegas stay in Vegas. Let’s honor the courage of those ordinary but utterly amazing folks on the ground—the ones who reached out to help others in need, putting their own lives on the line in the process. Let’s rejoice that they stood up in the face of terrible evil and did what had to be done. Let’s remember those incredibly brave people every single day.
And while we’re at it? Yes, let’s all be a little kinder.
Please.

Feinstein: 'America is a gun-happy country'

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said during an interview that aired Sunday that the U.S. is "gun-happy."
During an interview on NBC's "Meet The Press," Feinstein was asked about her call for legislation that would ban "bump stocks," a device that allows semi-automatic weapons to fire more rapidly.
"What does that say about the state of the gun debate that basically the best you thought you could do here is just to simply introduce a loophole closing?" host Chuck Todd asked.
"The state is sad. America is a gun-happy country," Feinstein said.
Feinstein said guns have their place in the country, adding that she doesn't have a problem if they are used properly.
"But what I have seen over the decades is a growth of substantial improper use of weapons," she added.
She referenced several mass shootings that have occurred over the pass several years before bringing up the Las Vegas shooting last weekend.
"Now you see a great American classic, which is country music, people by the thousands out in a safe place, with a big hotel in the background," she said.
"And somebody comes along. He has been legal. He's gotten his weapons legally," she continued.
"He has 40 weapons. He has 12 of these bump stocks. They are on the weapons. And he begins to fire a weapon that fires similar to a machine gun out of two broken hotel windows."
More than 50 people were killed and more than 500 injured when a gunman opened fire last weekend at a county music festival in Las Vegas.
Several lawmakers have renewed their push for gun control in the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

Feinstein: No law would have stopped Las Vegas gunman

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said in an interview broadcast Sunday that no law could have stopped the suspected shooter, Stephen Paddock, who was behind last week's mass shooting in Las Vegas.
Feinstein spoke on CBS News’s “Face the Nation” about gun legislation in the wake of the attack launched from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel targeting a country music concert.
“Could there have been any law passed that would've stopped him?” Host John Dickerson asked the senator.
“No, he passed background checks registering for handguns and other weapons on multiple occasions,” Feinstein replied.
Feinstein’s remark comes as Republicans have started to express interest in a conversation about regulations for bump stock devices, which were found in the hotel room of the suspected gunman. The devices increase the possible rate of gun fire on semi-automatic weapons.
The National Rifle Association (NRA) following last week’s mass shooting said devices like bump stocks “should be subject to additional regulations,” though it did not call for new gun legislation.
Feinstein, who is pushing legislation to ban bump stocks, said there is “Republican interest” in the bill.
“We have Republican interest. I have nobody lined up, we have 38 cosponsors, they're all Democratic. We've had individuals that have indicated an interest and particularly for a hearing,” she said.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in 2010 found that bump stock devices were a part, rather than a firearm, concluding that they were not subject to regulation like a weapon.

Some questioned whether Hill violated, or had previously violated, ESPN’s Twitter policy. Hill is known for being outspoken about current political events.
ESPN’s policy previously encouraged sports journalist to refrain from “political editorializing, personal attacks or ‘drive-by’ comments” directed at then-candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Three months after Trump was elected, the policy was adjusted to allow commentators like Hill to express their views if the topic is “related to a current issue impacting sports.”
Hill’s tweets come at a time when news sites, most recently Politico, have spoken out about potential job-candidates' political opinions on social media. Politico said they throw-out “dozens” of potential hires because of “partisan or puerile tweets” that they feel are “revealing insight into how people write” and cover stories.
At a conference in June, Hill claimed that mixing sports and politics is unavoidable in the current political climate.

Kid Rock Fires Back at Critics, Stresses 'I Love Black People'
"My track record in Detroit and Michigan speaks for itself, and I would dare anyone talking trash to put theirs up against mine," singer wrote
By Ryan Reed
September 11, 2017
Kid Rock fired back at critics in a lengthy Facebook post Monday, claiming the recent controversy regarding his past use of Confederate flags onstage is a distraction created by the "extreme left" in an an [sic] attempt to "stir the pot" due to his potential, and presumably fake, Senate run in 2018.

"My track record in Detroit and Michigan speaks for itself, and I would dare anyone talking trash to put theirs up against mine," the singer said, responding to the backlash after he was selected to headline the first six shows – launching Tuesday, September 12th – at the city's new Little Caesars Arena.
Some publications, including Detroit Free Press, and civil rights groups have called the Kid Rock bookings an insult to the city, which has an 80 percent black population. The performer began using Confederate flags during concerts in 2001 but stopped the practice a decade later after receiving a NAACP Great Expectations Award.
Prior to the NAACP event, roughly 50 protesters gathered at the Cobo Center, the site of a corresponding awards dinner. But the ceremony moved forward, and the singer accepted his award, which recognized his ongoing support for the city. "I love America, I love Detroit and I love black people," he said during his speech.
Now the musician claims the reinvigorated protest is politically motivated, citing his past concerts in the city as proof. "Pretty funny how scared I have them all and their only agenda is to try and label people / me racist who do not agree or cower to them!!" he wrote. "No one had a word to say when we sold out the 6 shows at LCA back in January! My track record in Detroit and Michigan speaks for itself, and I would dare anyone talking trash to put theirs up against mine. I am also a homeowner and taxpayer in the city of Detroit, so suck on that too!"
Kid Rock, who dubbed himself the "King of Detroit Love," pointed the finger at local charities who failed to support him during the media cycle, writing, "I will focus my philanthropy efforts on other organizations besides the others I supported in the past." He also stood by his criticism of NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who, during numerous pre-game performances of national anthem, famously took the knee in protest against police discrimination.
"To be clear - Fuck ANYONE who takes a knee or sits during our national anthem!" he fumed. "Pretty sure if Russell Wilson or Tom Brady were doing it they would have no problem finding a job playing for any team they wanted in the NFL! So cut the bullshit!"
Before ending his note with a climactic "God bless," the rap-rock artist added, "I know I should probably not even have posted anything about these bottom feeders but I will always stand up for myself, my family, my friends, my fans, my city, my state, my country and the good in human nature! P.P.P.P.P.S. I LOVE BLACK PEOPLE!!"
Kid Rock unveiled his Kid Rock For Senate website in July. While many critics wrote off the unveiling as a promotional stunt for new music, Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren warned that history could repeat itself.
"I know a lot of people are thinking: this is some sort of joke, right?" the Democrat wrote in an email to supporters with the subject line "Senator Kid Rock (R-MI)." "Well, maybe this is all a joke – but we all thought Donald Trump was joking when he rode down the escalator at Trump Tower and announced his campaign, too."

Far right's Richard Spencer returns to Charlottesville, tiki torch in hand

Photograph -- The terms alt-right, neo-Nazis, and white supremacists are often used interchangeably, but to members of those groups, there's a difference. Valeria Merino/Courier-Journal.
Far-right white nationalist Richard Spencer and his supporters convened Saturday night in downtown Charlottesville, Va., chanting “You will not replace us!” as they encircled a statue of Robert E. Lee with tiki torches.
The rally appeared to draw about two dozen men in khaki pants and white shirts, according to social-media posts of people who attended or witnessed the event. The display had no sign of the violence that marked the Aug. 11-12 Unite the Right rally in the city that is home to the University of Virginia.
Spencer headlined that rally, which left one woman dead during clashes with counter-protesters.
► Oct. 5: 'White Lives Matter' rally planned Oct. 28 for Tennessee
► Oct. 1: Protesters heckle white supremacist gathering
► Sept. 30: White supremacist summit convenes in Tennessee
The Charlottesville statue of the Confederacy's most famous general has become a flash point for clashes between far-right groups, including the Ku Klux Klan and white nationalists, and counter-protesters often known as “Antifa,” an anti-fascist umbrella organization.
Charlottesville's Lee statue has been draped in black following vandalism and Charlottesville City Council's effort to have it removed and the park where it is located renamed. That removal is on hold pending a court challenge.
The Saturday night rally appeared to be the first of a new string of Spencer-connected rallies and speeches across the South in the next month, including a planned Oct. 19 appearance at the University of Florida. As a sign of the sensitivity of the issue, the university set up a webpage providing detailed information about the event — and saying the school's decision was based on First Amendment grounds, The News Service of Florida reported.
► Sept. 29: White nationalist flyers removed from university campus
► Sept. 29: Church shooting suspect had note referencing Charleston massacre
Spencer was supposed to speak at the university in September, but the event was delayed because of security concerns and then followed with a free-speech lawsuit.
As a state entity, UF must allow the free expression of speech,” the university said in a statement posted to its website earlier this week. “We cannot prohibit groups or individuals from speaking in our public forums except for limited exceptions, which include safety and security.
Our decision to disallow the September event was based on specific threats and a date that fell soon after the Charlottesville event. Allowing Spencer to speak in October provided additional time to make significant security arrangements.
Another white supremacist rally is scheduled Oct. 28 in Shelbyville, Tenn., organized by the Nationalist Front.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia—White supremacist Richard Spencer suddenly reappeared on Saturday night with torch-bearing supporters, two months after he organized an infamous hate march here.
Spencer and his 50 or so followers gathered around a statue of Robert E. Lee in Emancipation Park chanting white supremacist slogans.
“They were shouting ‘You will not replace us,’ ‘Russia is our friend,’ ‘the South will rise again,’ ‘we'll be back,’” said a University of Virginia faculty member, who wished not to be named for fear of retribution.
“I saw a bunch of guys filing in with what appeared to be torches and then the shouting started. I decided that I wasn't going to avoid them and I got right up in their faces,” the faculty member said.
Spencer, who advocates for “peaceful ethnic cleansing” of non-whites, made a brief speech through a bull horn.
“We are here to represent white America’s interest,” Spencer shouted, claiming Charlottesville residents have a “false sense of community,” according to the faulty member.
Police arrived about 30 minutes after Spencer and his followers left.

Sullivan has been under fire for failing to stop Spencer’s march on August 11 when hundreds of white supremacists bearing torches gathered around a statue of Thomas Jefferson chanting racist slogans including “Jews will not replace us.”
The next day, white supremacist James Fields killed protester Heather Heyer by ramming his car into a crowd demonstrating against the “Unite the Right” rally.
Following Heyer's death, President Donald Trump blamed “many sides” for violence in Charlottesville, though only white supremacists have been charged by for violence, including Fields.
Christopher Cantwell was charged with a felony for spraying a protester. Alex Ramos and Daniel Borden were arrested for beating a black man, allegedly breaking his wrist and lacerating his head. Richard Preston, a member of the Ku Klux Klan, was arrested for illegally discharging a firearm.
The Lee statue was covered with black tarps by the city since shortly after August's violence, while the city tries to find a legal means of removing it. The statue is off-limits, surrounded by orange plastic fencing. A Charlottesville spokesperson said the Spencer assembly was protected by the First Amendment.

White Nationalists Reappear in Charlottesville in Torch-Lit Protest
By MATT STEVENS OCT. 8, 2017
Photograph -- A group of white nationalists briefly protested in Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday night, eight weeks after a rally there turned violent.
The prominent white supremacist Richard B. Spencer was a featured speaker at a rally on Saturday in Charlottesville, Va., where demonstrators reprised their chant of “You will not replace us!” and asserted that the South would “rise again.”
The gathering, which occurred eight weeks after a “Unite the Right” rally resulted in the death of a 32-year-old woman, was considerably smaller than the one in August, instead resembling a group of protesters who descended on the park in May.
The Charlottesville Police Department said in a statement that Saturday’s rally began around 7:40 p.m., included 40 to 50 people and lasted no more than 10 minutes.
“No disorders occurred during this rally,” the police said. Mr. Spencer then boarded a bus, which was followed by police officers “to ensure that the group was leaving the city,” according to the statement.
It added, “Our department is conferring with city leadership and the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office to determine what legal action may be taken in response to this event.”
On Twitter, Mayor Mike Signer of Charlottesville urged the demonstrators to “Go home!”

ONE MORE TRULY BIZARRE TRUMP FACT, THOUGH I’M SURE THIS ONE REALLY IS A TYPO BY A DATA ENTRY CLERK, IF THERE STILL ARE SUCH POSITION IN THE WORLD OF WORK. IF HE HAD MEANT TO DO THAT, HE WOULD HAVE CHANGED HIS NAME FROM JARED TO SOMETHING MORE FEMININE TO GO WITH HIS NEW IDENTITY. ON THE OTHER HAND, HE DOES HAVE A VERY SMALL BONED STRUCTURE. (SORRY. THAT WAS HOSTILE.)

Kushner registered as male voter, board says, correcting error
BY MEGAN R. WILSON - 09/27/17 10:51 AM EDT
The New York Board of Elections on Thursday corrected information suggesting President Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, had listed his gender as “female” on a voter registration form.
Kushner, now a White House adviser, did check the box for “male” on his original registration form, the board said, but the information was entered incorrectly in a database.
“It does happen from time to time,” Board of Elections Executive Director Michael Ryan told The New York Daily News. “I wouldn’t call it a common occurrence.”
Reports about Kushner registering as a female vote went viral after the Democratic opposition research firm American Bridge found data in a voter database that said he had checked the box for “female.”
The voter registration data was found through Nexis. The Hill and other news outlets confirmed the information, which was first reported by Wired.
New York voter registration forms require registrants to check a box to denote their gender, M or F, and the Daily News found that Kushner clearly checked the box signifying he is a male voter.
The correction, marked CORRECTED GENDER, appeared Wednesday in the AVID database, which is accessible only from a board of election's office.
When registered to vote in New Jersey, prior to 2009, Kushner's gender was labeled as "unknown," which Ryan said could have contributed to the mix-up.
American Bridge pounced on the apparent mistake, pointing to Kushner having to update his federal security clearance forms multiple times to amend with unreported contacts with foreign officials.
Kushner told congressional investigators that those mistakes have been due to a “miscommunication” with his assistant.

Steve Wynn: Las Vegas shooter's behavior 'would have triggered a whole bunch of alarms here'
BY JULIA MANCHESTER - 10/08/17 09:22 AM EDT
Las Vegas hotel and resort owner Steve Wynn said on Sunday that the behavior of the suspected shooter who opened fire on a country music festival would have put his employees on high alert.
"The scenario that we're aware of would have indicated that he didn't let anyone in the room for two or three days, that would have triggered a whole bunch of alarms here," Wynn told Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday."
"And we would have — on behalf of the guests, of course, investigated for safety and it would have been provocative situation. I'm sure that the same is true in other hotels but in this hotel, a 36-hour, a 24-hour, 36-hour 'Do Not Disturb' on a room is a predicate for investigation," he added.
Wynn's comments come a week after the suspected gunman, identified as Stephen Paddock, opened fire on an outdoor concert on the Las Vegas strip, killing 58 people and leaving hundreds injured.
The shooting has ignited debates over gun control and hotel security.
Wynn, who has said in the past that Las Vegas is a target for terror attacks, added that his properties have added various increased security measures in recent years.
"We had to recruit and expand security by tens of millions of dollars to cover every entrance, to retrain the entire workforce, from housekeeping and room service, and people are in the tower and observing people," he said.
"We had to cover every exit and every aspect of the building to see if we could identify and preempt any kind of terroristic or violent action. It is never perfect, of course, but what you can do, to use local vernacular, you can change the odds, I guess," Wynn continued.

Judge Blocks Texas From Giving Voting Information To Trump Voter Fraud Probe
The judge said cooperating with the federal commission could violate voter privacy and chill free speech.
By Sam Levine
A Texas judge has temporarily blocked the state from handing over voter information to President Donald Trump’s commission on voter fraud, saying doing so could jeopardize privacy.
State District Judge Tim Sulak on Tuesday granted a League of Women Voters request for a temporary restraining order, blocking Texas Secretary of State Rolando Pablos (R) from disclosing information sought by the federal probe.
The Trump commission requested voter data from all 50 states on June 28, setting off a wave of concern from election officials about surrendering the sensitive data. Some states refused to comply, while others said state laws prevented them from cooperating. So far, 19 states and one county in Hawaii have turned over information to the commission, according to documents filed in a separate lawsuit.
“The injury resulting from such acts will be irreparable,” Sulak wrote in his order blocking Texas from disclosing voter data. “If the private information contained in the Texas Computerized Voter Registration List is transmitted without appropriate safeguards, it is likely to become public.” Releasing that information, the judge added, could violate the plaintiffs’ privacy rights and lead to “chilling of their First Amendment rights.”
The ruling is a victory for the League of Women Voters of Texas and the state conference of the NAACP, which brought the lawsuit, as well as other voting advocates who say Trump’s commission will try to twist the data to create an exaggerated picture of voter fraud in the United States. Several studies and investigations have shown it is not a widespread problem.
Sam Taylor, a spokesman for the Texas secretary of state, declined to comment on the restraining order, citing pending litigation. He noted the office receives hundreds of requests for voter information each year.
The voter fraud commission didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Andrew Kossack, the commission’s designated federal officer, said in a court filing Friday that voter information provided to the commission would not be made public to safeguard personal privacy.
Texas election law sets certain qualifications for when election officials can release voter information. They cannot disclose any information containing a voter’s Social Security number to anyone who plans to use it for a commercial purpose.
“Texas must do what is required under state law and protect voter information in their possession,” said Elaine Wiant, president of the League of Women Voters of Texas, said in a statement.
In addition to a handful of lawsuits at the state level, Trump’s commission is facing several lawsuits in federal court. Some of those lawsuits argue that the commission didn’t perform a necessary review for collecting state data. So far, federal judges have declined to block the commission from collecting information.
The commission has indicated it plans to match voter data with a Department of Homeland Security database of non-citizens to identify voter fraud. That method has been used in the past and has produced unreliable results.
A hearing in the Texas lawsuit is scheduled for Oct. 16 in Austin.

NRA's LaPierre: Feinstein wants to turn gun control debate into 'Christmas tree on the Hill'

National Rifle Association (NRA) Chief Executive Officer Wayne LaPierre in a Sunday interview repeatedly criticized Sen. Dianne Feinstein for pushing gun control legislation, saying the California Democrat wants to turn the debate "into a Christmas tree on the Hill."
During an interview with CBS News’s “Face the Nation,” host John Dickerson asked LaPierre what Republicans supporting the NRA should want in the wake of the recent mass shooting in Las Vegas.
“I think you want to tell ATF to do its job. It’s an interpretive issue. And they need to get the job done,” LaPierre said, referring to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
“But not let Dianne Feinstein, which is what she wants to do, turn this all into some Christmas tree on the Hill where she brings all her anti-gun circus, she’s been trying to do for years, into this.”
LaPierre reiterated the NRA’s call for the ATF to re-evaluate bump stock devices, which increase the rate of gunfire on semi-automatic weapons and were found in the hotel room of the suspected Las Vegas shooter
He again slammed Feinstein, who has long been an advocate for gun control legislation, saying the senator is pushing for a “utopian world without guns.”
“There’s not a gang member in Chicago, who’s going ‘hey I’m going to get you, but first I have to go through Dianne Feinstein’s background checks.’ It’s nonsense,” he said in the interview.
