On Wednesday, The Rachel Maddow Show released leaked audio of House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes that was recorded at a private fundraiser for his Republican colleague, Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers. The recording shows Nunes’ commitment to using the power of his office to obstruct Robert’s Mueller investigation of Donald Trump, with the congressman acknowledging his aim to protect the president from investigators to ensure the GOP remains in power.

“If [Attorney General Jeff] Sessions won’t unrecuse and Mueller won’t clear the president, we’re the only ones,” Nunes said to the crowd of Republican donors. “Which is really the danger. That’s why … we have to keep all these seats. We have to keep the majority. If we do not keep the majority, all of this goes away.”

These private remarks are the opposite of shocking given what Nunes has said and done in public. Since Trump took office, Nunes has publicized classified information meant to support a claim by Trump that Barack Obama had personally “tapped” his phones without revealing that his source was the White House itself; hyped and produced a memo, which Trump’s own Justice Department described as misleading, that was meant to discredit the FBI; prematurely closed the House Intelligence Committee’s Russia investigation and reached conclusions that contradicted the findings and beliefs of the intelligence community and even some of the committee’s Republican members; campaigned to publicize classified information that intelligence officials have described as directly threatening intelligence-gathering sources and methods; and spent the last few months building a campaign to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in a way Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan called “cavalier.”

There is one way, though, in which Nunes’ fundraiser comments might reveal something important: They show his belief that he has the support of Republican leadership in his campaign to shield Trump. For her part, McMorris Rodgers, the chair of the House Republican Conference, seemed to indicate he is correct in that view.

Rep. Adam Schiff, the ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee, told me last week that he felt that Ryan has at least tacitly “endorsed” Nunes’ “malfeasance.” Ryan has portrayed the situation as otherwise, publicly distancing himself from the efforts to impeach Rosenstein and pressing his colleagues to back off that attempt after articles of impeachment were submitted last week.

Hardline Republicans, however, have promised that impeachment options “remain on the table.” Rosenstein has become the top target of the president’s defenders, because he has ultimate authority over the Mueller probe that Trump has so vocally and consistently declared to be a “witch hunt.” (On Thursday, he called it a “rigged witch hunt.”)

Nunes’ comments reveal that his current plan is to wait until Brett Kavanaugh has been confirmed to the Supreme Court by the Senate and then to return to trying to get Rosenstein impeached. Here’s the relevant portion of audio:

Audience member: “But also, on things that came up in the House on Rosenstein impeachment thing. And it appears from an outsider that the Republicans were not supported.”

Nunes: “Yeah, well, so it’s a bit complicated, right? And I say that because you have to, so we only have so many months left, right? So if we actually vote to impeach, OK, what that does is that triggers the Senate then has to take it up. Well, and you have to decide what you want right now because the Senate only has so much time. Do you want them to drop everything and not confirm the Supreme Court justice, the new Supreme Court justice? … I’ve said publicly Rosenstein deserves to be impeached. I mean, so, I don’t think you’re gonna get any argument from most of our colleagues. The question is the timing of it right before the election.”

McMorris Rodgers: “Also, the Senate has to start –”

Nunes: The Senate would have to start, the Senate would have to drop everything they’re doing and start to, and start with impeachment on Rosenstein. And then take the risk of not getting Kavanaugh confirmed. So it’s not a matter that any of us like Rosenstein. It’s a matter of, it’s a matter of timing.

Nunes states that the Rosenstein impeachment is merely being delayed, not entirely tabled. McMorris Rodgers, too, seems to acknowledge that the dynamics of the Senate, which is hoping to hold hearings on Kavanaugh’s nomination next month, prevent a Rosenstein impeachment from going ahead right now.

It’s unclear whether McMorris Rodgers is speaking for the House Republican leadership. It’s possible McMorris Rodgers is patronizing Nunes. It’s also possible she’s serious about giving him the chance to impeach Rosenstein. Given the persistence of Trump’s House supporters and the timing of Kavanaugh’s Senate confirmation, we’ll likely have answers to these questions very soon.

Wednesday night, MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow aired audio leaked from a fundraiser hosted by Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) for Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers’ (R-WA) reelection campaign. Per Maddow, the audio was obtained by a progressive group called “Fuse Washington*” and comes from a closed-door, private event for donors in Spokane.

A spokesman from Nunes’ office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Here are the four biggest revelations from Nunes’ speech:

1)Nunes is worried that without the blind and unconditional protection of a Republican majority, the President will be in serious legal jeopardy from Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe.

“This puts us in such a tough spot. If Sessions won’t unrecuse and Mueller won’t clear the President, we’re the only ones, which is really the danger…We have to keep all these seats, we have to keep the majority. We do not keep the majority, all of this goes away.”

2) Though their attempts seem to have petered out for now, there is still will from at least some faction of the Republican caucus to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

“The Senate would have to drop everything they’re doing and start with impeachment on Rosenstein, and then take the risk of not getting Kavanaugh confirmed. So it’s not a matter that any of us like Rosenstein, it’s a matter of timing.”

3) Nunes stated strongly that a politician disseminating stolen information given to him or her by a foreign entity is a crime (which sounds an awful lot like what the President, his family members and his associates may have done). In his hypothetical, Nunes is using Portugal as the foreign entity and Rodgers as the receiver.


“So Cathy was getting secret information from the Portuguese—that may or may not be unusual. But ultimately, let’s say that the Portuguese came and brought her some stolen e-mails and she decided to release those. Okay now we have a problem, right? Because somebody stole the emails, gave them to Cathy, Cathy released them. Well if that’s the case, that’s criminal.”

4) On a less serious note: Even Nunes, one of Trump’s most stalwart defenders, sometimes cringes at the President’s tweets:

“…you know you have a mixed bag on the tweets right? Sometimes we love the President’s tweets and sometimes we cringe on the President’s tweets, but they’re trying to make a political—this is all political as to why that story ran the “New York Times” on the tweets.”

While progressives hoping for tide-shifting victories by progressive insurgents such as Dr. Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan and Cori Bush in Missouri were forced to watch their hopes dashed late Tuesday as their candidates came up short against more moderate rivals, is the real takeaway from the series of Midwestern primaries that it was a "fantastic night for centrist Democrats" or that progressives cannot win running on bold, visionary platforms?

Because while El-Sayed and Bush did not find pathways to victory against their rivals—the former losing to state Senate leader Gretchen Whitmer (endorsed by both the powerful United Auto Workers union and Emily's List) in Michigan's gubernatorial primary and the latter to Congressman Lacy Clay (a 7-term incumbent who inherited the seat from his father) in Missouri's 1st Congressional District—progressive groups like the Bernie Sanders-inspired Our Revolution and unabashedly progressive Justice Democrats still had numerous other victories of their endorsed candidates to celebrate on Tuesday.

In addition to numerous down-ballot wins, both groups applauded James Thompson in Kansas' 4th District and Rashida Tlaib in Michigan's 13th:

And even for those progressive insurgents who came up short, it remains clear to many that the energy within the Democratic Party and among prospective voters is squarely with those who—in addition to opposing President Donald Trump and his Republican Party—are shifting their policy agendas to more forcefully address the needs and concerns of working people, the planet, and under-served communities.

In a pair of tweets on Wednesday, Ocasio-Cortez said that political defeats are also part of political progress, but that "you can't be afraid of loss," because "[f]ear keeps people from accomplishing great things."

Responding to El-Sayed's defeat, Lisa Changadveja, the state and local director for MoveOn.org, which had endorsed his candidacy, argued that his loss did nothing to diminish the accomplishments and importance of his campaign.

"The strength of Abdul El-Sayed's campaign in Michigan has shown the nation what kind of politics is possible when we put the challenges facing students, working people, and people of color front and center in our dialogue," she said in a statement. "Abdul has activated an entirely new coalition of voters, and brought new people into the political process, both enormous achievements worth celebrating."

Despite others framing his loss as proof that a less progressive and visionary candidate is the key to future victories, Changadveja emphasized the importance of Democrats and other voters sick and tired of the regressive, hateful, and destructive policies of the Republican Party coming together to regain control of Congress and the nation's other democratic institutions.

"While Michigan MoveOn members voted to endorse Abdul," Changadveja concluded, "they also understand the importance of wrestling governors' mansions across the country away from the grip of reactionary politicians. That's why we will do everything in our power to elect Gretchen Whitmer as Michigan's next governor, and end the Republican-led assaults on communities across the state."

And so while it was a night of ups and downs for those championing the progressive insurgency within the Democratic Party, The Intercept's Ryan Grim, David Dayen, and Zaid Jilani note in their detailed accounting of Tuesday's results that regardless of every victory and loss, it is clear that the "progressive organizing still paid dividends."

Fox & Friends Poll Designed to Discredit Medicare for All Explodes in Their Face

When President Donald Trump's favorite right-wing television program "Fox & Friends" launched a Twitter poll asking whether the benefits of Medicare for All "outweigh the costs," they likely didn't expect 73 percent of the nearly 32,000 respondents to answer yes—but that's precisely what happened. "Bernie Sanders' 'Medicare for all' bill estimated to cost $32.6 trillion, new study says. Would the benefits outweigh the costs?" the survey asked, referencing a recent Koch Brothers-funded study that found Sen. Bernie Sanders' (I-Vt.) universal healthcare program would save $2 trillion over ten years—a fact that "Fox & Friends" conveniently neglected to mention in both its poll and its coverage of the new analysis.

Despite the misleading framing "Fox & Friends" deployed, the results of the unscientific survey were overwhelming.

Bonnie Castillo, executive director of National Nurses United, responded to the poll results on Twitter, when just 13,000 people had voted:

The failed attempt by "Fox & Friends" to falsely document Medicare for All as unpopular—despite recent surveys showing that progressive policies like single-payer are experiencing unprecedented support, including among Republicans—fits an emerging pattern of right-wing media outlets falling face-first in their attempts to discredit commonsense, straightforward, and bold ideas.

As Common Dreams reported, right-wing Daily Caller editor Virginia Kruta attended a rally last week featuring a speech by democratic socialist congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. In an appearance on Fox News, Kruta recounted the "truly terrifying" experience of hearing Ocasio-Cortez advocate policies that "everybody wants, especially if you're a parent."

"They talk about education for your kids, healthcare for your kids, the things that you want," Kruta said of democratic socialists like Ocasio-Cortez.

Responding to Kruta's remarks, journalist Sarah Jaffe asked, "Does Fox know that they're unwittingly creating commercials for socialism?"

THERE ARE THOSE AMONG THE DEMS, ALSO, WHO ARE ADAMANTLY AGAINST SANDERS NOW, ESPECIALLY CERTAIN BLACK WOMEN, BECAUSE HE PUT UP A FIGHT FOR THE LEADERSHIP. THE WAY CLINTON AND OTHERS STUBBORNLY HELD ONTO WHAT THEY CONSIDERED TO BE CLINTON’S “RIGHT” TO BE THE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE BECAUSE SHE HAD “LET OBAMA” TAKE THAT POSITION IN 2008 ON THE PROMISE THAT SHE WOULD UNDOUBTEDLY BE “THE CHOSEN” IN 2016. SANDERS HAD COME TO A POINT, HOWEVER, OF MAKING A STAND, AND HE IS STILL STANDING RESOLUTELY, WITH MANY THOUSANDS OF OTHERS. THAT’S WHAT I NEED IN A LEADER. A “HARD RESET” IS EXACTLY WHAT THE DNC NEEDS, ALSO. THEY HAVE BECOME A PARTY THAT I DON’T TRUST, NOR DO I BELIEVE IN THE DIRECTION THAT THEY WANT TO GO. WE TRULY DO NEED A NEW REDISTRIBUTION OF THE WEALTH AND CLASS STRUCTURE TO BE MORE OPEN AND FAIR, AND WE SANDERS BELIEVERS NEED TO PUSH THAT THROUGH. REMEMBER, THE ISRAELITES WOULD HAVE BEEN JUST ANOTHER SHEEP-HERDING TRIBAL PEOPLE WITHOUT MOSES, AND BERNIE SANDERS IS VERY MUCH LIKE A MOSES. HE’S ALSO JUST A DECENT, CREATIVE, WARM, CARING MAN. I DON’T MERELY ADMIRE HIM, I LIKE HIM. WE NEED MORE LIKE THAT.

THE CYNICAL, OVERLY POLISHED, WEALTHY DEMOCRATS ARE NO LESS CLASS-CONSCIOUS THAN THE SAME TYPE OF REPUBLICANS ARE. WE NEED TO REFORM OUR THINKING AND SELF-IMAGE. BEING WEALTHY AND EDUCATED WITHOUT BEING WILLING TO LET OTHERS IN AND GIVE THEM A PLACE AT THE TABLE IS THE NEGATION OF WHAT THE DEMOCRATS USED TO BE, AND SHOULD BE AGAIN. AMERICA WITHOUT GENEROSITY IS NOT AMERICA AT ALL.

Even 20 years after her death, Princess Diana’s voice is still resounding worldwide. Here are some fascinating facts you might not have known about the Princess of Wales.

Soon after Princess Diana’s renown marriage and subsequent divorce with Prince Charles, she found herself entangled in a web of tabloid lies and public scrutiny. In an attempt to clarify her side of the story, she spilled the details on a series of audiotapes in May 1991. After entrusting the information to her close friend Dr. James Colthurst, she had him proceed to hand-deliver the package (by bike at that) from Kensington Palace to a UK journalist named Andrew Morton.

Morton then took the tapes to a café, where he listened to Diana finally elucidating her darkest secrets about the Camilla scandal, her ongoing battle with bulimia, and even her developing thoughts of suicide. Diana’s closest confidantes worked with Morton throughout the book’s production. Her participation in the novel was initially kept secret, but Morton decided to tell the public after her unexpected overpass death in 1997.

The bombshell biography, DIANA: Her True Story – In Her Own Words, based off the tapes, was finally published in 1992. Diana wrote to Colthurst six months before the book was published to relay her anxiety of the public frenzy that the release would entail, and ultimately, relief that her voice would be heard.

The life of a princess was assumed by the mass public to be a royal fairy tale, but the jarring reality was revealed to be very far from that. In the tapes, Princess Diana famously calls Camilla Parker Bowles the “third person” in her marriage. Even more surprisingly, Prince Charles didn’t try to suppress his blatant affections for Camilla throughout their marriage. Check out some of the most inspiring quotes from Princess Diana.

Although Diana and Camilla were initially friends, repeating incidents continued to feed Diana’s suspicions about a potentially clandestine romance. Charles and Camilla supposedly had nicknames for each other, Fred and Gladys. Two weeks before he married Diana, Charles had gifted a personalized bracelet to Camilla (a blue disc with “G and F” on it). He was also seen wearing gold cufflinks engraved with interwoven Cs to a formal dinner. His clear affections for Camilla understandingly stirred skepticism and jealousy for Diana, and she even told her sisters she couldn’t go through with the wedding. To that, they told her she had no choice.

Sally Bedell Smith claims in her biography, Prince Charles: The Passions and Paradoxes of an Improbable Life, that Charles even cried the night before his wedding as he couldn’t get over his infatuation for his ex-girlfriend Camilla Parker Bowles.

According to her personal account, Diana reports she once overheard Charles talking to Camilla on the phone while he was in the bath. After hearing him tell her, “Whatever happens, I will always love you,” Diana confronted Charles about the relationship. His response? The two “had a filthy row.”

As if that’s not heartbreaking enough, the princess also revealed that she witnessed a photograph of Camilla falling out of Charles’ diary.

According to Diana, the stress induced by their failing marriage is what instigated her eating disorder, which she said began after they got engaged. According to the book, Diana reports, “My husband put his hand on my waistline and said: ‘Oh, a bit chubby here, aren’t we?’ and that triggered off something in me.'

It wasn’t until 1994 that Prince Charles admitted to his adultery with Camilla for the first time. Princess Diana famously stated, “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.” The two royals filed for divorce in 1996. Diana died a year later.

The couple’s stark age difference and Diana’s crumbling mental state is said to have been the primary culprits of the failed marriage, in conjunction with Diana’s reluctance to take prescribed medication and keep up with therapy.

Charles later issued a statement shortly following Diana’s death that he had “no intention of remarrying,' but proceeded to wed Camilla in 2005.

In the updated edition of DIANA: Her True Story – In Her Own Words, journalist Andrew Morton recounts the phenomenal story that led to the revolutionary book publication in 1992 and unveils how he was able to get his hands on her story. These are the secrets about Princess Diana that no one knew until after her death.

But every scandal will inevitably leave behind a cookie crumb trail of clues, and closer inspection indicates that their union was doomed for catastrophe from the get-go. One interaction seems to say it all; in a foreboding clip that People uncovered, Prince Charles and Princess Diana are seen talking to a reporter during the announcement of their engagement in 1981. In response to the reporter’s inquiry of their being in love, Princess Diana firmly responds, 'Of course.'
