FLAKE SPEECH AT HARVARD YESTERDAY

Sen. Jeff Flake Unloads on Trump in Harvard Commencement Speech: ‘Bottomless Appetite for Destruction’
by Josh Feldman | 5:34 pm, May 23rd, 2018

Senator Jeff Flake, one of President Trump‘s toughest Republican critics, unloaded on him again today in remarks to Harvard Law grads.

CBS News reports that Flake unloaded not just on the Commander-in-Chief but also Congress for not doing enough to conduct proper oversight:

“Our presidency has been debased. By a figure who has a seemingly bottomless appetite for destruction and division. And only a passing familiarity with how the Constitution works,” Flake said, according to prepared remarks obtained by CBS News ahead of the speech. “And our Article I branch of government, the Congress (that’s me), is utterly supine in the face of the moral vandalism that flows from the White House daily.”

He called Congress “willing accomplices to this calamity” and at one point he even said, “We may have hit bottom.”

Flake has made a few speeches on the Senate floor in the past year denouncing the President, and just this week he slammed Trump’s “demand” to the DOJ:

Jeff Flake

@JeffFlake
Determining who or what is investigated by the DOJ is not the President's call. Deputy AG Rosenstein's referral to the Inspector General is the right move. The White House should in no way hinder or impact the ongoing work of Special Counsel Mueller

Trump just woke up and launched into a 9-tweet conspiracy theory tantrum
BY ROBERT HAFFEY
PUBLISHED ON MAY 23, 2018

President Trump woke up this morning, rolled out of bed, flipped on his television to watch Fox News and immediately slipped into full tinfoil hat mode.

Of course, conspiracy theory peddling is nothing new for the man who appeared on The Alex Jones Show, started the racist birther movement that claimed our first black president hadn’t been born in the United States, and implied that Senator Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) father helped assassinate JFK. Even with that résumé in mind, the tweet storm Trump unleashed this morning was erratic and unhinged.

He started by once again attacking the FBI and his favorite bugaboo the “Deep State,” which is just his way of impugning the reputations of the career bureaucrats, intelligence officers, analysts, and diplomats who keep our country humming along behind the scenes, and whose devotion to the rule of law and democratic institutions is a direct threat to a man as corrupt as Trump.

The president insisted that the FBI investigation into his campaign’s possible collusion with Russia is “phony” and a “made up scam,” this despite the fact that Special Counsel Robert Mueller has already handed down numerous indictments and seems to be turning up more damning evidence every day.

“What goes around, comes around!” Trump added at the end of the tweet, in what can only be construed as some kind of cryptic threat aimed at the FBI.

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump
Look how things have turned around on the Criminal Deep State. They go after Phony Collusion with Russia, a made up Scam, and end up getting caught in a major SPY scandal the likes of which this country may never have seen before! What goes around, comes around!

Trump then sent out several tweets complaining about the fact that the FBI had an informant in his campaign. He wants to cynically paint it as a partisan effort by the Obama administration to undermine his election chances, but in reality it just means that the bureau had evidence at the time that made them think Trump or someone close to him was engaged in criminal activity.

He also coined the term “Spygate,” an absurd phrase that he will almost certainly begin to throw around more and more in an attempt to create outrage in his base and distract from the reality of the situation.

The president also gave a shoutout to Fox’s latest blonde bigot Tomi Lahren, a woman who has grown famous for her ability to tap into the racial resentment of the Republican Party with her large assortment of dog whistles and angry tirades. Then, in a demonstration of how short his attention span, Trump pivoted to talking about trade with China, something which he has repeatedly shown he understands very little about. Trump touted his party’s plans to repeal elements of the landmark Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, a scheme that, if successful, will almost certainly lead to another financial crisis. WASHINGTON (AP) — White House adviser Jared Kushner — who's President Donald Trump's son-in-law — has been granted a permanent security clearance.

That's according to a person with knowledge of the decision but wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

Kushner lost his access to the nation's deepest secrets when White House chief of staff John Kelly downgraded Kushner's clearance due to questions that arose during Kushner's background briefing.

Kushner has been operating under a temporary security clearance for several months.

Kushner is married to Ivanka Trump, the president's oldest daughter.

TO MR. BLOOMBERG, OPRAH, AND OTHERS WHO ARE TRYING TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE DIRECTION OF OUR PEOPLE, THANK YOU FOR THESE COMMENTS. WE NEED TO THINK ABOUT THE FACT THAT A GROUP CONSCIENCE FORMED FROM LIES, GREED, SOCIAL LAZINESS AND PURPOSEFUL ABUSES WILL BE THE KIND OF DEEP AND INTERTANGLED WEBS THAT WE ARE ALREADY SEEING NOW IN AMERICA. HOW CAN ANOTHER NATION TRUST US?

THIS TRUMP MOVEMENT IS THE NEWEST FACE OF CORPORATISM, IN THE FORM OF OUR VERY OWN FULLY FORMED OLIGARCHY AND THE NATIONALIST DEHUMANIZATION THAT IS CLEARLY NEO-NAZISM. AND SOUTHERN LADIES, BEING NON-CONFRONTATIONAL IS NOT GOING TO SOLVE OUR PROBLEM, SO STOP LETTING YOUR HUSBAND TELL YOU WHAT TO THINK, SAY OR VOTE FOR; AND AS FOR BEING DEMURE, IF THERE’S A MAN AROUND TO ATTRACT, GO FOR IT, BUT OTHERWISE STEP DOWN FROM THAT PEDESTAL OF SOCIETAL EXPECTATIONS AND WORK FOR A JUST NATION ALONG WITH THE OTHER FREEDOM LOVING CITIZENS.

TRUMPISM HAS TO BE FOUGHT, NOT WITH KNIVES AND GUNS, BUT WITH IDEAS, BECAUSE IT IS A DISEASE OF IDEAS. THIS BLOOMBERG ARTICLE GIVES SOME OF THE LEGAL, SPIRITUAL AND PASSIONATE WEAPONRY THAT WE WILL NEED. IF YOU ARE WAITING FOR THE CALL TO ARMS, LISTEN TO THE SPEECH THAT SENATOR JEFF FLAKE GAVE AT HARVARD LAST WEEK; AND RACHEL MADDOW’S INTERVIEWS WITH CONGRESSMAN ADAM SCHIFF AND DAN COATS OF MAY 23.

BLOOMBERG SPEAKS HERE AGAINST THE DIVISION IN OUR SOCIETY RIGHT NOW AS “THE PROBLEM,” BUT IT ISN’T THE PRIMARY PROBLEM TO ME. IT’S THE A POWER GRAB FOR ALL THINGS VALUABLE ECONOMICALLY AND THE POWER THAT GOES WITH THEM, WHICH IS THE REAL PROBLEM. AS LONG AS THE INCREASINGLY AGGRESSIVE OLIGARCHS ARE ALLOWED TOTAL CONTROL, WE CAN’T HAVE PEACE.

OF COURSE, JUST GOING ON THE INTERNET AND RAVING OBSCENELY AND INCOHERENTLY AT EACH OTHER IS NOT THE WAY TO DO IT. THAT REALLY IS HARMFUL; MAKING RATIONAL POINTS IS VERY USEFUL, HOWEVER. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE SOME ONLINE TOWN MEETINGS, OR RATHER MORE OF THEM AND WELL ADVERTISED AHEAD, WHOSE DIALOG IS WATCHED FOR FOUL LANGUAGE OR WORSE. THE LEADER OF THE TOWN MEETING COULD THEN ANSWER QUESTIONS. I KNOW BERNIE SANDERS HAS DONE SOME, AND IF ALL THE HONEST RIGHT LEANING POLITICIANS WOULD DO THAT, TOO, WE WOULD HAVE LIGHT ALONG WITH THE HEAT.

I WANT TO BE A PART OF A POSITIVE CHANGE IN THE PUBLIC MIND, AND THE OPEN FORUM OF THE NET IS OUR BEST PATH TO THAT, NOW. ON MY FACEBOOK PAGE I DO SOMETIMES ENTER INTO INTERACTIONS OVER ISSUES I CARE ABOUT, BUT I TRY TO PULL UP MY BEST WORD SKILLS RATHER THAN BEING A TROLL, THOUGH. I AM USUALLY ABLE TO DO IT WITH REASON AND GOOD INTENTION. MY VIEW IS THAT THOSE WHO THINK WE HAVE “TOO MUCH DISCORD” USUALLY MEAN THAT THEY SEE TOO MANY THINGS THAT THEY PERSONALLY DISAGREE WITH. I SAY A DEMOCRACY WITHOUT DISAGREEMENT IS DEAD. I DO AND WILL TRY TO KEEP IT CIVIL AND PRODUCTIVE.

I HAVE CHOSEN THE BERNIE SANDERS ROUTE BECAUSE THAT’S WHERE THIS COUNTRY NEEDS TO BE ECONOMICALLY AND SOCIALLY, AND I THINK HE’S STRONG AND INTELLIGENT ENOUGH TO DO THE JOB. HE’S ALSO AS DECENT, HONEST, CARING, INDIVIDUALISTIC, GENTLE AND IDEALISTIC AS THEY COME. HE’S ONE OF THE HALF DOZEN BEST PUBLIC SERVANTS IN MY VIEW AS WE’VE HAD IN A LONG TIME. AS FOR HIS HEALTH, IT SEEMS TO BE GOOD, SO I’M IN HIS BOAT SOLIDLY. MAY THE HIGHER POWER KEEP HIM SAFE. WE NEED HIM.

THIS MATTER OF THE “ALTERNATE REALITIES” MENTIONED BY BLOOMBERG WORRIES ME MUCH MORE THAN ANY ORDINARY GREED-BASED DECEIT DOES. THE SIMPLEST EXPLANATION FOR A GREAT DEAL OF WHAT WE’VE SEEN IS THE RUSSIAN TROLL FARM INPUT, BECAUSE SOME OF WHAT I’VE SEEN IS REALLY BIZARRE. IT TOOK ME TOTALLY BY SURPRISE, BECAUSE A CAMPAIGN BASED ON SHEER STUPIDITY TO THIS DEGREE SHOULDN’T HAVE TAKEN HOLD IN US SOIL.
I HOPE I’M NOT BEING SHOCKINGLY “EXTREME” IN SAYING THIS, BUT I DO BELIEVE THAT SPREADING DANGEROUS LIES OF ANY KIND SHOULD BE CRIMINALIZED. WE NEED TO TAKE A CLOSE AND VERY HONEST LOOK AT THE CONSTITUTION AND THE MAIN LAWS WITH AN EYE TOWARD A REWRITE, I TRULY DO BELIEVE. BUT THAT’S A STORY FOR ANOTHER NIGHT.

FACE THE NATION (DURATION 6:12.)
CBS/AP May 12, 2018, 11:32 AM
Michael Bloomberg: Americans facing "epidemic of dishonesty"

NEW YORK -- Americans are facing an "epidemic of dishonesty" in Washington that's more dangerous than terrorism or communism. That's according to former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who warned in a commencement speech on Saturday at Texas' Rice University that "an endless barrage of lies" and a trend toward "alternate realities" in national politics pose a dire threat to U.S. democracy.

The 76-year-old billionaire, who flirted with an independent presidential run in 2016, did not call out any politicians by name.

Although he derided Donald Trump as "a con" and a "dangerous demagogue" before his election, in an interview before the speech Bloomberg refused to comment specifically on the Republican president's troubled history with the truth. Fact checkers have determined that Mr. Trump has made hundreds of false and misleading statements since entering the Oval Office.

"This is bigger than any one person. It's bigger than any one party," he said in the interview.

In the speech, Bloomberg evoked the legend of the nation's first president, George Washington, who as a boy said he could not tell a lie when asked if he cut down a cherry tree.

"How did we go from a president who could not tell a lie to politicians who cannot tell the truth?" Bloomberg asked Rice graduates and their families gathered in Houston.

He blamed "extreme partisanship" for an unprecedented tolerance of dishonesty in U.S. politics. People are committed more to their political tribes than the truth, he said, suggesting that the nation is more divided than any time since the Civil War.

"There is now more tolerance for dishonesty in politics than I have seen in my lifetime," Bloomberg said. "The only thing more dangerous than dishonest politicians who have no respect for the law is a chorus of enablers who defend their every lie."

For example, he noted that Democrats spent much of the 1990s defending President Bill Clinton against charges of lying and personal immorality just as Republicans attacked the lack of ethics and honesty in the White House. Just the reverse is happening today, he said.

In one jab at Mr. Trump, he noted that the vast majority of scientists agree that climate change is real. Mr. Trump and his Republican allies have repeatedly called climate change a hoax promoted by America's adversaries.

"If 99 percent of scientists whose research has been peer-reviewed reach the same general conclusion about a theory, then we ought to accept it as the best available information -- even if it's not a 100 percent certainty," Bloomberg said. He added: "That, graduates, is not a Chinese hoax."

He warned that such deep levels of dishonesty could enable what he called "criminality." Asked what specifically he was talking about, Bloomberg noted "lots of investigations" going on, but he declined to be more specific.

Several Trump associates are facing criminal charges as part of a federal probe into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election. Three have already pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI. Federal investigators want to interview Mr. Trump himself, although the president's legal team has resisted so far.

"When elected officials speak as though they are above the truth, they will act as though they are above the law," Bloomberg told Rice graduates. "And when we tolerate dishonesty, we get criminality. Sometimes, it's in the form of corruption. Sometimes, it's abuse of power. And sometimes, it's both."

Bloomberg wasn't the only commencement speaker to discuss a culture of untruths this week. On Friday, Oprah Winfrey encouraged graduates of the University of Southern California's (USC) Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism to keep people who disparage news as "fake" in check.

"You are in a position to keep all those who now disparage real news, you are going to be the ones who keep those people in check. Why? Because you can push back and you can answer false narratives with real information. You can set the record straight," Winfrey said. "You also have the ability and power to give voice who desperately now need to tell their stories and have their stories told."

Winfrey encouraged graduates to challenge those from the political left, right and center, holding them accountable.

"When you see something, say something. And you say it with the facts and the reporting to back it up," she said. "You make the choice everyday to exemplify honest because the truth exonerates and it convicts, it disinfects and it galvanizes. The truth has always been, and will always be, our shield against corruption, greed and despair -- the truth is our saving grace."

Obama just publicly humiliated Trump over his scandal-ridden presidency
BY SALVATORE NICHOLAS
PUBLISHED ON MAY 24, 2018

Former President Barack Obama has many traits worth emulating, both in the world of politics and in the world of business. For that reason, he was recently invited to a Las Vegas tech conference to discuss his decision-making process during his tenure in the Oval Office.

Business Insider reports that Obama’s final guideline to the conference goers was simple: insist that people deliver bad news quickly and are not punished for honest mistakes.

“No one in my White House ever got in trouble for screwing up as long there wasn’t malicious intent behind it,” he said.

It’s a rule President “Art of the Deal” should consider trying, at least according to Obama, because he attributes that final piece of his process to his scandal-free White House – and used it as an opportunity to mock the current occupant of that historic building.

“And there wasn’t any malicious intent, which is why I didn’t have scandals, which seems like it shouldn’t be something you brag about. But actually, if you look at the history of the modern presidency, coming out of the modern presidency without anybody going to jail is really good. It’s a big deal.”

The rest of Obama’s points made at the Wednesday conference hosted by identity security company Okta was no kinder to Trump or his governing style – but it’s not because Obama was roasting the orange buffoon.

It’s because Trump thrives in chaos whereas Obama functions in order.

For example, Obama believed in listening to his constituents before making decisions, a tact Trump claims to employ but it’s all for show and never in action.

“Before you start wanting to change everything,” Obama instructed, “spend time talking to people you want to change or whose lives are going to be disrupted.”

He also reminded those in attendance that there is never a singular right answer to a problem, a stark contrast to Trump who deals exclusively in absolutes:

“I used to describe the nature of the presidency as having to make decisions about issues that nobody else could solve or are basically insolvable or at least not perfectly solvable. By definition, if a problem had an obvious solution to it, somebody else would have solved it before it got to me.”

Trump could really benefit from listening to Obama instead of unravelling eight years of accomplishments. After all, Trump is embroiled in scandal after scandal, to the point where “breaking” news concerning him is when he shows an ounce of humanity.

Obama, as he pointed out in his tech speech, ran a scandal-free White House for two terms. Except for the tan suit – never forget the day the world fell apart because of Obama’s early-90’s wardrobe flashback.

Thank goodness he never carried on multiple affairs with various adult film actresses while his third wife was pregnant with his fifth child. Maybe then Obama’s legacy would mean something to the “family values” conservatives out there.

(CNN) - President Barack Obama on Thursday took some questions in the White House press briefing room about serious subject matters - ISIS, Iraq, Syria, Russia.

But the reaction on Twitter was largely focused on his rarely worn tan suit.

Within seconds of stepping into the room, tweets were already firing off about Obama's pre-Labor Day attire. And by the end of the news conference, a few Twitter handles had been created in honor of the suit.
