NEWS AND VIEWS

NO WONDER THE SUDDEN AGITATION ABOUT SPIES AND WIRETAPS, ETC. THERE WAS SOMETHING TO BE DISCOVERED, IT SEEMS. READ THE TWO COMMENTS ABOUT TRUMP JR “AND “CONSERVATIVE ACTIVISTS” AND THEN AGAIN, “OTHER AMERICAN POLITICAL FIGURES,” SOUNDS LIKE A SCENARIO WHICH I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL TIMES, OR SO IT SEEMED TO ME. CONSERVATIVES ARE PRONE TO SEEKING TWO THINGS, MONEY AND POWER. IT SO HAPPENS THAT SO IS RUSSIA, SO IT’S A MARRIAGE MADE IN HEAVEN. RIGHT? ADDITIONALLY, THE REASON JEFF SESSIONS RECUSED HIMSELF FROM THE RUSSIA INVESTIGATION WAS THAT HE HAD HAD “BRIEF” CONTACTS WITH ONE OR MORE RUSSIANS, ADMITTEDLY.

THAT WAS QUITE A WHILE AGO, SO THAT’S ALL I REMEMBER, BUT THE SPEED WITH WHICH OUR REPUBLICAN LEGISLATORS TURNED AWAY FROM THEIR INITIAL POSITIONS AGAINST TRUMP ALSO SEEMS SUSPICIOUS TO ME. AS I HAVE COMMENTED BEFORE, REPUBLICAN POLITICIANS ALL “SAY THE PASSWORD” IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS. ONE IN PARTICULAR IS THE WAY THEY ALL STATED THAT THEY “DIDN’T KNOW” ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING. IT IS INFURIATING TO ME WHEN OUR LEADERS BEHAVE THAT WAY. THAT’S WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE ASK A DISHONEST MAN AN HONEST QUESTION. IT’S AS THOUGH WE HAVE HANDED HIM A RATTLESNAKE TO HOLD.

'Trump’s son should be concerned': Wiretaps show Trump Jr. met with Putin ally
Michael Isikoff, Yahoo News • May 25, 2018

The FBI has obtained secret wiretaps collected by Spanish police of conversations involving Alexander Torshin, a deputy governor of Russia’s Central Bank who has forged close ties with U.S. lawmakers and the National Rifle Association, that led to a meeting with Donald Trump Jr. during the gun lobby’s annual convention in Louisville in May, 2016, a top Spanish prosecutor said Friday.

Jose Grinda, who has spearheaded investigations into Spanish organized crime said that bureau officials in recent months requested and were provided transcripts of wiretapped conversations between Torshin and Alexander Romanov, a convicted Russian money launderer. On the wiretaps, Romanov refers to Torshin as “El Padrino,” his godfather.

“Just a few months ago, the wiretaps of these telephone conversations were given to the FBI,” Grinda said in response to a question from Yahoo News during a talk he gave at the Hudson Institute, a conservative think tank in Washington. Asked if he was concerned about Torshin’s meetings with Donald Trump Jr. and other American political figures, Grinda replied: “Mr. Trump’s son should be concerned.”

The comments by Grinda were the first clear sign that the FBI may be investigating Torshin, possibly as a part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Torshin — a close political ally of Vladimir Putin — had multiple contacts with conservative activists in the United States during the election, seeking to set up a summit between the Russian president and then-candidate Trump. Although the summit never transpired, Torshin did meet briefly with the president’s son at a private dinner in Louisville during the May 2016 annual convention of the NRA. A member of the NRA since 2012, Torshin has been a regular attendee of the group’s conventions in recent years and hosted senior members of the group in Moscow.

PUTIN RUES THE RESULT OF HIS FINELY CONSTRUCTED COUP. HE FAILED TO COUNT ON THE NATURE OF AN AMERICAN FLASHBACK REACTION TO SUCH THINGS. HE WANTS SMALLER SANCTIONS? BAD MOVE, THEN. I BELIEVE HE WON IN 2016 AT TOO HIGH A COST TO HIMSELF AND RUSSIA, AS WELL AS OURSELVES, OF COURSE. I DON’T BELIEVE THERE WILL BE NUCLEAR WAR, BUT A NEW COLD WAR IS ALREADY HERE AMONG MANY OF US.

Putin: We’re held hostage to political strife around Trump

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia — Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday bemoaned troubled relations with the United States, saying Russia wants to improve them but is effectively held hostage by the disputes surrounding President Donald Trump.

Putin’s comments in a meeting with top editors of international news agencies underlined how Russia’s once-high hopes for improved relations under Trump have eroded. Although the Trump administration has imposed sanctions on Russia and expelled scores of its diplomats, Russian politicians generally portray Trump as blocked by domestic opposition from fulfilling his campaign promises of improving relations with Moscow.

Earlier in the day, speaking at an annual economic forum, Putin sharply criticized Trump’s decision to pull out of the Iranian nuclear deal, saying it could trigger dangerous instability.

The Russian leader said the U.S. withdrawal from the 2015 agreement came even as the international nuclear watchdog confirmed that Tehran was fulfilling its obligations. “What should it be punished for, then?” Putin asked.

Trump’s administration has demanded that Iran stop the enrichment of uranium and end its involvement in Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and Afghanistan in order to negotiate a new deal.

“If international agreements are revised every four years it would offer zero horizon for planning,” Putin said. “It will create the atmosphere of nervousness and lack of trust.”

In the meeting with editors, Putin declined to assess relations between Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, but said the United States should not try to take a hard line with the country.

“In order to talk about a full denuclearization of North Korea, I believe we should give North Korea a guarantee of their sovereignty and inviolability,” the Russian president said. “I am deeply convinced that if you don’t impose anything, if you don’t behave aggressively and if you don’t corner North Korea, the result that we need will be achieved faster than many would think, and at less cost.”

Putin also expressed frustration at having little contact with Trump and faulted the investigation into whether there was collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia and whether Russia tried to interfere with the 2016 U.S. election.

“We are hostages to this internal strife in the United States,” Putin said. “I hope that it will end some day and the objective need for the development of Russian-American relationships will prevail.”

At the economic forum, Putin also engaged in a tongue-in-cheek exchange with French President Emmanuel Macron, saying with a smile that Russia could help protect Europe if its rift with the U.S. widens over Iran.

“Don’t you worry, we will help ensure your security,” Putin said. Macron responded on a serious note that France and its allies could stand for themselves.

In his speech at the forum and during talks with Putin on Thursday, Macron called for closer ties between France and Russia despite their differences.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also spoke at the forum and called for closer cooperation with Russia.

The presence of Macron and Abe and their statements in favor of cooperation were important for Putin, indicating that the U.S.-led efforts to isolate Russia face increasing obstacles.

The U.S. and its allies have hit Russia with several waves of sanctions that badly hurt its economy.

Putin sharply criticized the sanctions, saying they signal “not just erosion but the dismantling of a system of multilateral cooperation that took decades to build.”

Putin told the editors that he would observe constitutional term limits that would prevent him from running for a new term in 2024. However, some observers have suggested he might seek to have the constitution changed.

On tensions with Britain over allegations that Russia was behind the March poisoning of a Russian former spy in Britain, Putin said there should “either be a joint, full-value, objective investigation or simply stop talking about this subject because it doesn’t lead to anything except worsening relations.”

Russia has repeatedly demanded that Britain let it take part in investigating the case.

DAVID HOGG HAS BEEN BADLY ABUSED BY RIGHTIST GROUPS AND INDIVIDUALS, BUT HE HAS JUST WON AGAIN. SEE BELOW. THE “DIE IN” AT A PUBLIX STORE IS VERY GOOD. LOOK AT THE TWEETED PHOTOS OF THE YOUNG PEOPLE DOING THEIR THING SO WELL. AT THIS DAY OF TRUMP DRUMS SOUNDING ON THE BORDER, I AM DELIGHTED WITH THE POWER OF THE INTERNET.

David Hogg and the Parkland students just scored another huge win against the NRA
BY SALVATORE NICHOLAS
PUBLISHED ON MAY 25, 2018

Do not mess with the kids from Parkland.

After another week of gunsanity in the United States where more innocent children were slaughtered, the activists from Parkland, Florida were appalled to find that the majorly-popular, Florida-based grocery store chain Publix had donated $500,000 to Republican gubernatorial candidate Adam Putnam, who receives kickbacks from the National Rifle Association. That’s when Hogg decided to take action.

Here’s what went down.

On Thursday, Hogg issued this challenge to Publix on Twitter when he learned of their donation: (PHOTOS OF A SYMBOLIC “DIE IN.”)

David Hogg

@davidhogg111
I call on @Publix to donate double the money they gave to Putman to the Stoneman Douglas Victims fund, $1,000,000. And never support an A rated NRA politician again.

The tweet was majorly engaged by Hogg’s following, but was ignored by Publix.

Undeterred, Hogg pressed on with his activism. On Friday, he and his fellow advocates staged a die-in at a Publix parking lot to publicly protest their donation to the NRA-beholden senator:

Early this morning @davidhogg111 teamed up with @ChangeTheRef to create an art instillation outside of @publix in protest of the corporation and their support of Adam Putnam. 17 chalk outlines in multiple parking spots were drawn and wrapped in caution tape. #msd #neveragain

The morning proceeded with no reaction from Publix. Simultaneously, another school shooting was barely avoided at the Noblesville West Middle School in Indiana when teacher Jason Seaman managed to disarm a potential shooter before his students became the latest victims of the NRA.

The silence from the right and Publix was deafening, and some began to wonder whether Hogg had lost his power of persuasion. Vice President Pence ignored Hogg’s call against Publix and instead issued more hollow prayers to the victims of the shooting in his home state with no acknowledgment of the need to change the country’s out-of-date gun laws.

As morning turned to afternoon with no word from Publix, Hogg issued one more tweet, taunting the grocery giant:

David Hogg

@davidhogg111
.@Publix I’m shaking in my boots awaiting your DM.

Looks like they slid into his DM’s after all, as not long after, Hogg hit pay dirt.

The Orlando Sentinel reported that Publix has suspended “political donations,” in another victory for the same teenager who brought Laura Ingraham’s Fox News Ingraham Angle to its knees when he called on a national boycott costing her over 20 high-level sponsors.

Although it does not conform to Hogg’s original request for a donation to the Stoneman Douglas Victim’s fund, it’s still a fairly significant victory for progress, especially after the NFL’s first amendment crushing vote to fine any teams which allow their players to protest during games, a vote they attributed to pressure from the president.

While Trump clearly abused the office of the presidency to push his agenda, corporate America has been able to do the same for the last eight years thanks to Citizens United, a landmark ruling which said billion-dollar corporations had the same rights as minimum-wage earning people. The decision turned campaign finance on its head and made it easier for candidates with corporate sponsorships to move forward and near-impossible for publicly funded campaigns to get off the ground.

The government has thus far failed to bring forth a vote to repeal Citizens United, but Hogg’s two victories suggest, small as they may be, a bit of hope in reclaiming the country for the people and not the corporations.

A TERRIBLE INCIDENT HAS OCCURRED AND FOR NO IMPORTANT OR LOGICAL REASON. THE BORDER PATROL IN GENERAL HAS HAD A SPOTTY REPUTATION FOR ITS’ POLICING DURING THE SEVERAL YEARS THAT I HAVE BEEN SELECTING AND POSTING THESE ARTICLES, BUT ALSO FOR THEIR NEED FOR MORE FINANCING. THEY ARE UNDERSTAFFED. IT’S A LONG BORDER AND HARD TO PATROL, I HAVE NO DOUBT. THERE HAVE BEEN MYSTERIOUS KILLINGS BEFORE. THIS ONE WAS MORE OPEN AND VISIBLE. NOTE HOW THE OFFICIAL STORY SHIFTS FROM POINT A TO POINT Z IN A FEW DAYS. FOR THE PRESUMABLY ACCURATE VERSION, GO TO THE CNN ITEM AND ESPECIALLY THE VIDEO.

THE MORE TRUMP EXCITES THE ANTI-IMMIGRANT FEELING, THOUGH, THE WORSE THESE HAPPENINGS WILL GET. IT IS CLEAR FROM VICENTE’S WORDS ECHOING TRUMP’S OWN TAUNT, REFERRING TO THEM AS “ANIMALS,” THAT IT IS TOO MUCH LIKE “THE SHOT HEARD ROUND THE WORLD.” REMEMBER THAT ONE? IT WAS LIKE A SPARK HITTING DRY FUEL. SUCH THINGS ARE DANGEROUS FOR US AS A COUNTRY, AS WELL AS FOR OTHERS WHO DO COME HERE TO LIVE. BOTH ARTICLES ARE POIGNANT AND CONTAIN SOME VARIETY OF INFORMATION, SO I HAVE KEPT BOTH. THE VIDEO IS SUPPOSEDLY IN THE LAST, BUT I CAN’T FIND IT HERE OR IN ANY OTHER ARTICLE. WHAT’S HAPPENING? NOTHING NEFARIOUS, I HOPE.

'Not animals': Guatemala family mourns niece killed by U.S. Border Patrol

GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) - The family of a 19-year-old Guatemalan woman killed by a U.S. border patrol officer called on Friday for the United States to dial-back its rhetoric on migrants, after President Donald Trump described gang members entering the country as "animals."

The woman, identified by her family as Claudia Gomez, was shot on Wednesday in south Texas by an officer who opened fire after several people "rushed him," the Border Patrol said in a statement on Friday. The agency, alternately describing them as "illegal aliens" and "a group of suspected illegal aliens," said Gomez was among them.

The Border Patrol said in an earlier statement that the people attacked the agent with blunt objects, and that Gomez was among the assailants.

"To the government of the United States, (I ask) that you do not treat us like this - like animals - just because you are a powerful and developed country," Dominga Vicente, Gomez's aunt, told reporters in Guatemala City.

The young woman from the Guatemalan highlands had left her home in search of work and education opportunities, Vicente said.

On Thursday, the Guatemala foreign ministry said the rights of migrants must be respected. "Guatemala laments any act of violence and excessive use of force by the border patrol," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

A seven-minute video posted online and viewed thousands of times appears to show the aftermath of the incident on a residential street. In the video, a woman calls out in Spanish, "Why did you shoot the girl? You killed her!"

Trump said last week that he was referring to criminal gangs when he called some illegal immigrants "animals."

He defended his statement on Wednesday, adding that he was working on a plan to reduce aid to countries that he said do nothing to stop MS-13 gang members from crossing into the United States.

The notorious criminal group has a presence across El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala.

BORDER SHOOTING – SEE THE VIDEO THAT IS WITH THIS ONE OR SO IT SAYS. I HAVE NOW LOOKED AT THREE OF THESE AND NOT ONE HAS A LINK TO A VIDEO THAT I CAN SEE. I DO HOPE THAT THIS ISN’T THE BIG C UNFOLDING HERE. GIVEN ALL ELSE THAT HAS HAPPENED, IT SEEMS ALL TOO POSSIBLE TO ME, AND SAD. PRES. TRUMP, HAVE YOU CENSORED OUR US ACCESS TO THIS INFORMATION? THAT KIND OF THING WON’T HELP YOU. IT WILL JUST CAUSE MORE ANGER HERE AND AROUND THE WORLD AS WELL. WHERE IS THAT ACCURSED VIDEO?

IN POKING AROUND SOME MORE, AND THIS TIME USING SEARCH PHRASE “BORDER PATROL AGENT,” I HIT A MORE PRODUCTIVE SET OF STORIES, THIS TIME FROM TRUMP’S ARCH ENEMY CNN. THEY WILL BE NEXT BELOW THIS FROM REUTERS.

THE VIDEO IS HERE, AND A GRUDGINGLY AMENDED STORY FROM THE BORDER PATROL AS WELL, BOTH FROM CNN. THE VIDEO IS EXCELLENT. IT ALSO INCLUDES THE “ANIMALS” COMMENT. HE’S SAID THAT SAME THING AT LEAST ONCE SOME MONTHS BACK AS I RECALL, TOO. I THINK HE DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO USE THE LESS EXPLOSIVE VOCABULARY OF THE WORLD STAGE, OR MORE LIKELY, HE JUST DOESN’T WANT TO CURB HIS ENTHUSIASM TO THAT DEGREE. I’M SIMILAR IN THAT I DON’T WANT TO CONSTANTLY AVOID BEING ENERGETIC SO AS TO APPEAR DEMURE OR TOTALLY LADYLIKE. I GREW UP IN THE SOUTH, AND I KNOW ABOUT IT. I JUST HATE THAT FORM OF FEMININITY AS A REQUIREMENT FOR ME JUST BECAUSE I’M NOT A MAN.

IN THE CONTEXT, HOWEVER, OF USING SUCH A TERM AS ANIMALS TO TALK ABOUT MOSTLY HUMBLE PEOPLE WHO CAN’T DEFEND THEMSELVES AGAINST HIS NEGATIVE AND YET POWERFUL POSITION, THAT INFURIATES ME. THAT IS BULLYING, PURE AND SIMPLE, AND I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT SHARE A DESIRE TO TREAT PEOPLE THAT WAY. I WANT TO BE GENTLE TO THE NEEDY AND ACCEPTING OF PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES LIKE SKIN COLOR, RELIGION OR LANGUAGE.

THE WORST THING ABOUT IT, THOUGH, IS THAT IT IS NOT BY ANY STRETCH OF THE IMAGINATION AN ISOLATED INCIDENT, AND IT IS CONTRIBUTING TO A NATIONAL AND, I BELIEVE FROM WHAT I’VE READ, INTERNATIONAL RISE OF WHAT CAN ONLY BE CALLED FASCISM. I HOPE THE PRESIDENT WILL MAKE SOME OVERTURES TO THE FAMILY OF THE GIRL AT THE VERY LEAST. INTERNATIONAL HATRED STARTS LIKE THIS, I’M AFRAID. HE SHOULD APOLOGIZE TO THE VICENTE FAMILY AT THE VERY LEAST, AND SEND SOME GOOD OLD TRUE VANILLA REPUBLICAN PRAYERS AND THOUGHTS AS WELL.

Border Patrol slightly changes account of undocumented woman's fatal shooting
By Ray Sanchez, Martin Savidge and Tristan Smith, CNN
Updated 10:59 PM ET, Fri May 25, 2018

(CNN)United States Customs and Border Protection on Friday released a slightly different account of a border agent's fatal shooting of an undocumented migrant near Laredo, Texas, raising new questions about what actually happened.

After initially reporting the agent was attacked by migrants armed with "blunt objects," the federal agency on Friday said only that the group "rushed" the officer after ignoring orders to get on the ground.

But its latest version of events makes no mention of blunt objects described in an agency statement issued after Wednesday's shooting in the border town of Rio Bravo.

Additionally, the Border Patrol at first reported that a round from the officer's gun "fatally wounded one of the assailants" but the latest statement refers to the gunshot victim as a "member of the group."

Customs and Border Protection on Friday canceled a new conference on the shooting and instead released its updated statement.

An agency spokesman declined to comment further, saying the shooting was being investigated by the FBI and the Texas Rangers. An FBI spokesman also said the agency had no comment due to the ongoing investigation.

LINKED: The US border is bigger than you think

The woman who was killed was identified as Claudia Patricia Gomez Gonzalez, 20, of San Juan Ostuncalco in Guatemala, Webb County Medical Examiner Corrine Stern said Friday. The cause of death was not released.

The victim's family held a news conference in Guatemala and asked for justice. "It's not fair that they treat them like animals, just because they come from countries less developed," Gomez's aunt said.

The family said the young woman had just turned 20, had graduated after studying accounting, and had headed to the United States when she could not find a job in Guatemala.

According to the family, the victim had a phone number with her of a family in the US, and the Border Patrol called that number to report that Gomez was dead. The family that received the call in the US then called her family in Guatemala to let them know.

Marta Martinez, who lives near the scene of the shooting, told CNN that she ran out of her home after hearing a gunshot. She said she didn't hear yelling or orders to stop or a commotion before the shot rang out.

Martinez later saw an officer turn over the body of a young woman, in her early 20s, who was face-down in the ground. she said.

The Webb County medical examiner has identified the 20-year-old victim from the CBP shooting as Claudia Patricia Gomez Gonzalez. Her family released this photo.

The young woman's face was covered with dirt on one side and blood on the other, according to Martinez, who recorded the aftermath of the shooting on her cell phone and posted videos on Facebook Live.

Martinez said she later saw a Border Patrol statement claiming the migrants tried to the hit the agent with "a two-by-four," referring to a piece of lumber.

"There are no two-by-fours there," she said. "It's only grass and some branches."

In the video, a uniformed man is seen giving someone on the ground chest compressions but Martinez said the woman appeared to be dead.

In a vacant lot near her home, Martinez said an agent captured two men who ran from the scene after the shooting. Martinez said she heard the officer tell the men: "This is what happens. You see?"

The Border Patrol said agents arrested three undocumented immigrants.

In her video, Martinez can be heard yelling in Spanish at the officer who led the men to his vehicle: "Why do you mistreat them? Why did you shot the girl? You killed her. He killed the girl. She's there. She's dead. I saw you with the gun, bro."

Martinez said she was afraid because Border Patrol agents have been stopping outside her home since her posts appeared on Facebook.

"I recorded," she said. "I went viral everywhere. I don't know but I'm scared they could do something to us."

RELATED: Is Border Patrol work dangerous? Not compared to being a cop
Martinez said an FBI agent came to speak with her about the shooting.
The name of the agent who fired the shot has not been released.

The Border Patrol said the agent, a 15-year veteran, was responding to a report of illegal activity near a culvert and discovered a group of undocumented immigrants about 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Texas branch of the American Civil Liberties Union has called for all border agents to begin wearing body cameras.

Rio Bravo is on the border with Mexico, about 170 miles south of San Antonio.

The shooting occurred a month after President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of National Guard troops as part of his crackdown on unauthorized immigration across the US-Mexico border.

CNN en EspaƱol's Jaqueline Hurtado contributed to this report.
