NEWS AND VIEWS

THERE IS NO ALLEGATION OF PHYSICAL ABUSE WHILE DE LA ROSA WAS IN CUSTODY, BUT HE WAS FACING DEPORTATION. IT ALSO DOESN’T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT HIS FAMILY BACKGROUND, OR HISTORY OF DEPRESSION. DE LA ROSA IS THE 8TH SUICIDE IN ICE DETENTION. I REALLY WOULD LIKE TO SEE A MORE INDEPTH ARTICLE ON ALL OF THE KNOWN SUICIDES.

ICE: Immigration detainee dead in apparent suicide

CUTHBERT, Ga. -- A Mexican man held at a south Georgia immigration detention center has died in an apparent suicide, according to authorities. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a news release Thursday that 40-year-old Efrain De La Rosa was pronounced dead around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday after staff at the Stewart Detention Center in the city of Lumpkin found him unresponsive in his cell.

He died at a hospital in Cuthbert after efforts to revive him failed. ICE said the case is under investigation but the "preliminary cause of death appears to be self-inflicted strangulation."

De La Rosa is the eighth person to die in ICE custody in fiscal year 2018, according to the news release. The agency said deaths in ICE custody are "exceedingly rare."

De La Rosa was handed over to ICE on March 11 by law enforcement in Wake County, North Carolina, after a March 9 felony conviction for larceny. He was in deportation proceedings at the time of his death.

ICE said senior leadership will conduct an agency-wide review. ICE has advised Mexican consular representatives who have notified De La Rosa's next of kin about the death, the news release said.

THIS ARTICLE SHOWS A LITTLE SLICE OF LIFE ON THE BOYS AND THEIR ORDEAL.

"Stateless" boy who emerged as leader in Thailand cave was key to rescue

The 12 boys rescued from a cave in Thailand are reported to be feeling better Thursday morning. The boys and their soccer coach have been hospitalized since their 18-day ordeal ended earlier this week and are expected to spend at least a week at the hospital, followed by 30 days at home.

The British divers who found the boys also had a helper inside the cave: A student who was able to take a leadership role by translating for them. Staff at his school told CBS News' Anna Werner, that's not surprising. He's a boy who has already faced significant challenges in his life and overcome them.

Final group was pulled from Thai cave just before water pump malfunction

Teacher Kru Nice says 14-year-old Adun Sam-On has always been a leader, despite the fact he doesn't have his parents with him or even an official home. Since Adun's parents slipped him out of Myanmar eight years ago to escape the ethnic conflicts there, he's become one of many students at this school considered "stateless." He's not a citizen of any country. Yet in Thailand, Adun is a top student and a standout athlete.

Kru told us she was so worried when she learned Adun was trapped in the cave. But Adun's proficiency in languages – he speaks four – proved key inside the cave, as he acted as translator for the British divers during the complicated rescue.

They were given anti-anxiety medication to keep them calm. In some portions of the journey, the boys were put into harnesses lying down. Rescuers used a rope system and high lines to pull them through the caverns.

Before they were found, a family member told CBS News the boys worked together to survive for nine days in the cave. When the boys entered the cave they each had a flashlight along with one watch and one mobile phone with light until the batteries died. They were able to check a watch for the time for the first three days. They slept close together for warmth and took turns digging in the cave to try and redirect the water that had trapped them.

Now, the boys are in the hospital where new video shows them sitting up in their beds, their relieved parents watching them through a window. It's the result Adun's teacher has been waiting for.

"He's a miracle boy," she told us. "I'm so happy he's safe."

CBS News has learned all of the boys want to become monks for a short period of time after they are released from the hospital. Sources also told us the boys have been asking about their cleats and when they can get back on the soccer field.

Thai Airways is providing round-trip tickets and an all-expenses-paid weeklong trip for all of the international volunteers who worked on this rescue. The tourism authority is also giving them all a five-year visa. Thai officials said they plan to create an interactive museum at the cave that will feature items such as the clothing worn by rescuers. But for now, the cave is closed.

I WANT POLICE DEPARTMENTS OF ALL KINDS TO HIRE BASICALLY EDUCATED OFFICERS ONLY, AND TO REQUIRE THE KIND OF FAIR, APPROPRIATE AND RESPECTFUL SERVICE THAT OUR COUNTRY NEEDS FROM THEM. IN SOME CASES, THEY BEAT OR BROWBEAT AN INDIVIDUAL, AND IN OTHERS THEY DO NOTHING TO HELP THEM. THERE IS ALSO A MIDDLE GROUND IN WHICH OFFICERS ARE RESPONSIVE TO PEOPLE AND HELPFUL. RACE AND ETHNICITY ARE INVOLVED IN THIS CASE, OBVIOUSLY, AS THEY SO OFTEN ARE. I’M GLAD THIS OFFICER IS “VERY REMORSEFUL,” BUT THE FACT THAT HE THINKS HE DID THE RIGHT THING DOESN’T SOUND LIKE REMORSE TO ME. IT SOUNDS LIKE FEAR OF PUNISHMENT. SAD, SAD, SAD. WHAT IS GOOD AND WHAT IS EVIL? CAN WE DISTINGUISH BETWEEN THEM AND ACT ON THE DISTINCTION? DO WE EVEN CARE?

Police shed light on cop who resigned after dispute over Puerto Rico flag shirt

VIDEO -- CBS News' Erin Donaghue and David Begnaud contributed to this report.

Authorities have shed light on a police officer who resigned this week amid an investigation into his response to a woman who said she was being harassed in a Chicago forest preserve for wearing a shirt with the Puerto Rican flag. Arnold Randall, general superintendent of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, said Thursday that the officer, previously identified as Patrick Connor, resigned of his own accord, and that he didn't resign in good standing. He left with a disciplinary review pending.

The harassment incident was captured in a June 14 video. It shows an irate man approaching a woman, B Mia Irizarry, as she waited for her family at a picnic area in the Forest Preserves of Cook County to celebrate her 24th birthday. The man told Irizarry to not wear a T-shirt celebrating Puerto Rico if she's an American citizen -- despite the territory being part of the U.S.

"You should not be wearing that in the United States of America," he said. "Are you a citizen?"

"Yes I am," Irizarry replied.

"Then you should not be wearing that. You should be wearing United States of America flag," he said.

An officer -- Connor -- arrived, but the video shows he didn't intervene even as the man invaded Irizarry's personal space and continued to harangue her. Irizarry is seen in the video filing a formal complaint and says that the initial responding officer did "absolutely zero."

Connor was placed on desk duty on June 26, after apparently taking a pre-scheduled vacation shortly after the incident.

The local police chief said Connor was very remorseful and that Connor thought he handled the incident appropriately.

Cook County Commissioner Luis Arroyo called the video showing the incident "appalling, gut wrenching, and a real wake-up call to everyone." Arroyo said the situation could have escalated but that the victim kept her composure.

The officer "embarrassed many of our law enforcement officers and tarnished the whole department with his failure to act," Arroyo said.

On Thursday, Randall said he is "outraged" and "sincerely sorry this happened."

Papa John's founder John Schnatter resigns as chairman of board after using racial slur

Papa John's Pizza's founder John Schnatter may have resigned as chairman of the restaurant chain's board of directors following news that he used a racial slur in a conference call, but he still owns a substantial stake in the company.

Schnatter owns roughly 30 percent of Papa John's. As of March 12, his stake was worth $622 million, though a recent decline in the company's stock price now values it at $479 million as of the close of trading on Wednesday.

Other major stockholders include asset management firm BlackRock, with a 9 percent stake; hedge fund Eminence Capital (6.5 percent); and investment advsier Vanguard (6 percent).

Schnatter resigned as chairman on Wednesday amid a growing uproar about his comments, but he will remain on the board. Papa John's shares, which fell nearly 5 percent on Wednesday, were up 12 percent on Thursday.

Schnatter, long the face of Papa John's through his TV commercials, acknowledged using a racial slur during a May conference call. He also apologized following a media report that said he had graphically described violence against minorities.

"News reports attributing the use of inappropriate and hurtful language to me during a media-training session regarding race are true," Schnatter said in a statement released Wednesday by the company.

"Regardless of the context, I apologize. Simply stated, racism has no place in our society," Schnatter's statement said.

The media-training company working with Papa John's opted to end its business relationship with the pizza company after the call, according to Forbes. The publication reported the objectionable behavior took place on a conference call intended as a role-playing exercise for Schnatter on avoiding racially charged mishaps in the future.

Papa John's initially declined to confirm or deny the report, but said in an emailed statement that the company "condemns racism and any insensitive language, no matter the situation or setting."

The controversy comes only seven months after Schnatter relinquished his CEO role after criticizing National Football League players for kneeling during the national anthem, blaming the outcry surrounding their protests for slowing sales growth at Papa John's, at the time an NFL sponsor and advertiser.

On the May call, Schnatter reportedly said the N-word while complaining that a legendary fast-food chain founder had used the word in the past without being subjected to public backlash. He also reflected on his childhood in Indiana, saying people used to drag African-Americans from trucks until they died, according to Forbes.

The Forbes report prompted protest from the Louisville NAACP, which said Schnatter should either step down or be removed from the University of Louisville's board of trustees by the city's NAACP.

The request was complied with quickly, as Schnatter did resign from the board he'd served on for two years, its chairman, J. David Grissom, said in a statement, which also thanked the executive for his "generous" support.

"After speaking with John, I'm confident that his comments, while inappropriate, do not reflect his personal beliefs or values," said Grissom, who added the board did not condone "racism or insensitive language regardless of the setting."

On Thursday, Major League Baseball indefinitely suspended its Papa Slam promotion, CNBC and Yahoo Sports reported. The Miami Marlins is also ending its Papa John's promotions, the team said on Twitter.

While pizza fans around the world debate whether or not pineapple is a legitimate topping, neo-Nazis and white supremacists are adding their own flavor to the mix: hatred.

The Daily Stormer, a neo-Nazi website whose name is an homage to the Nazi newspaper Der Sturmer, declared Papa John's the official pizza of the alt-right, following comments made by the popular US pizza chain's CEO.

Papa John's, an official NFL sponsor, was widely criticized on social media after CEO John Schnatter blamed the company's lackluster third-quarter earnings in part on the NFL's bad leadership which has allowed players to sit out or kneel during the US national anthem in protest against police brutality.

"This should have been nipped in the bud a year and a half ago," Schnatter said, referring to the protests. "The controversy is polarizing the customer, polarizing the country."

Even though Schnatter never mentioned race, his comments earned Papa John's some new fans on the alt-right.

BERNIE SANDERS’ GENUINE STAND ON THE RUSSIAN ANNEXATION OF CRIMEA, VS PLETKA’S MISSTATEMENT OF IT.

Was Bernie Sanders fine with Russian annexation of Crimea? No
By Louis Jacobson on Wednesday, July 11th, 2018 at 2:54 p.m.

Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea is poised to resurface as President Donald Trump prepares for his first summit with Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

Virtually the entire global community, including President Barack Obama’s administration, refused to recognize the annexation, which was the first such takeover in Europe since the end of the Cold War. But given Trump’s friendliness to Putin, some foreign policy specialists are wondering whether the president might soon change the U.S. position on the annexation of territory that belonged to Ukraine.

During the July 8 edition of NBC’s Meet the Press, Danielle Pletka*, the senior vice president for foreign and defense policy studies at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, equated the Russia-friendly comments of Trump with the stance of the 2016 Democratic presidential runner-up, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

"The Crimea thing highlights something much more important, which is this awful meeting of sort of the Bernie bros and the Trump people on this question of eating away at other country's sovereignty," Pletka said. "You know, ‘Oh no, that's fine, what do we care? Crimea, they've got a lot of Russians anyway.’ Bernie Sanders took that position, President Trump takes that position. I don't understand why it is that the center-right and the center-left are not more forceful on this issue."

There’s a problem with this assertion: Sanders has consistently opposed the Russian annexation of Crimea. Here are some of his comments (with bold emphasis by us):

• On March 17, 2014, Sanders wrote in an official statement, "The entire world has got to stand up to Putin. We've got to deal with sanctions."

• On Feb. 4, 2016, during an MSNBC Democratic primary debate, Sanders said, "I worry about Putin and his military adventurism in the Crimea and the Ukraine." (Sanders did go on to say that he ranked the "isolated" nation of North Korea as the most serious national security threat to the United States, above Russia, without minimizing Russia’s threats.)

• Feb. 11, 2016, during a PBS Democratic primary debate, Sanders said, "Right now, we have got to do our best in developing positive relations with Russia. But let's be clear: Russia's aggressive actions in the Crimea and in Ukraine have brought about a situation where President Obama and NATO — correctly, I believe — are saying, you know what, we're going to have to beef up our troop level in that part of the world to tell Putin that his aggressiveness is not going to go unmatched, that he is not going to get away with aggressive action. I happen to believe that Putin is doing what he is doing because his economy is increasingly in shambles and he's trying to rally his people in support of him. But bottom line is: The president is right. We have to put more money. We have to work with NATO to protect Eastern Europe against any kind of Russian aggression."

When we contacted Sanders’ office, they said the senator stands by the positions in these quotes.

The closest potential evidence suggesting that Sanders was copacetic with the annexation of Crimea was his vote against legislation that would tighten sanctions on Russia. The bill, called the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, passed with only three nay votes in the House and two in the Senate, including Sanders, before it was signed by Trump in August 2017.

However, Sanders made clear that his objection to the bill had to do with its policies toward Iran, not the sanctions on Russia.

In June 15, 2017, statement, Sanders said, "I am strongly supportive of the sanctions on Russia included in this bill. It is unacceptable for Russia to interfere in our elections here in the United States, or anywhere around the world. There must be consequences for such actions." However, Sanders continued that on Iran, "these new sanctions could endanger the very important nuclear agreement that was signed between the United States, its partners and Iran in 2015." (Trump subsequently dropped United States support for the Iran nuclear agreement.)

Russia specialists we contacted agreed that Sanders has been consistent in opposing the annexation of Crimea.

"I don’t think there is evidence that Sanders or his supporters were ever in support of Russian annexation of Crimea," said Yoshiko Herrera, a University of Wisconsin-Madison political scientist. "Both center-left and center-right supported sanctions and punishment of Russia over Crimea annexation."

Dan Nexon, an associate professor of government and foreign service at Georgetown University, agreed.

"The Sanders campaign considered the annexation of Crimea illegal and illegitimate," said Dan Nexon, an associate professor of government and foreign service at Georgetown University. "He did have a more calibrated position that sought to balance, on the one hand, deterrence and pressure with, on the other hand, avoiding unnecessary escalation. But it was never that he said, ‘That’s fine. What do we care?’"

Pletka told PunditFact that she may have conflated some past research she had done on the issue, inaccurately attributing the views of some left-wing Democrats to Sanders, who did not share them.

Our ruling

Pletka said Sanders was indifferent to Russia's annexation of Crimea because he felt "they have a lot of Russians anyway."

We found no evidence to support that assertion. To the contrary, we found that Sanders has consistently criticized the annexation since it occurred and supported measures to punish Russia. We rate the statement False.

MAJORITY OF DEMOCRATS WANT CANDIDATES TO BE MORE LIKE BERNIE SANDERS, POLL FINDS
BY TIM MARCIN ON 7/11/18 AT 1:19 PM

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders might have lost his 2016 bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, but he certainly won a number of supporters along the way.

To wit: A new poll released Wednesday by YouGov showed that a majority of Democrats want candidates in 2018 to be more like the independent, democratic socialist candidate.

The polling firm asked: "Do you wish the candidates who run for Congress this year will be more or less like Bernie Sanders?"

A full 57 percent of Democratic respondents said "more like Bernie Sanders" in response. Sixteen percent said less while 27 percent responded "not sure." Not surprisingly, Sanders was less popular with conservatives. Only 13 percent of Republicans said they wanted candidates to be more like Sanders, while 74 percent said less. Independents were split. Twenty-seven percent said more like Sanders, while 35 percent said less, and 38 percent said "not sure."

The survey from YouGov interviewed 1,500 U.S. adults from July 8 through July 10. It had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

A number of Sanders-style candidates have already found success after his 2016 bid fell short. The Vermont senator's grassroots campaign garnered momentum by eschewing corporate donations, railing against Wall Street and condemning the vast income inequality in America. As The Independent reported, progressive candidates backed by Our Revolution—the group that was sparked by Sanders's campaign—have made great strides and won races in primaries.

There was perhaps no win as surprising and important as democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez beating longtime New York congressman Joe Crowley. She relied on a straightforward message of supporting working families and has since won much support on the left.

"Starting off the campaign, I didn’t know everything I was getting into, but I knew the kind of campaign that my opponent was going to run: a standard DCCC [Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee], corporate Democrat campaign," Ocasio-Cortez told Jacobin magazine in an extended interview. "Usually those campaigns don’t focus on the field. I was coming into this race with a background as an organizer. From the beginning, I was always focused on organizing people, building a coalition, and deepening that coalition with other organizers. The campaign was almost entirely focused on physical organizing and digital outreach to reinforce that physical organizing."
