News and Views

FIRST, SEE MY COMPANION SINGLE SUBJECT BLOG FOR TODAY: “‘WHEN AMERICA STOPPED BEING GREAT’ – A BBC TAKE ON THE CURRENT TIMES.” THE REST OF THE NEWS IS A SIGN OF THE SICKNESS OF SOME – TOO MANY – OF THE CITIZENS HERE IN THE USA. WHO WE ARE IS CHANGING SO RAPIDLY THAT I DON’T RECOGNIZE OUR COUNTRY ANY MORE.

ANOTHER TERRIBLE EVENT HAS OCCURRED, THIS TIME IN A SMALL TOWN IN TEXAS. THE SUSPECT HAS BEEN SHOT AND KILLED, BUT THERE ARE MANY PARISHIONERS WHO WERE KILLED BY THE GUNMAN. THIS IS THE LATEST STORY ON IT THAT I’VE SEEN, AS OF 8/5, SUNDAY AT 7:28 PM. SINCE THESE ARTICLES COME FROM DIFFERENT TIMES DURING THE DAY AND DIFFERENT SOURCES, SCAN THROUGH THEM TO SEE WHAT YOU MAY HAVE MISSED.

THE ONE INTERESTING AND POSSIBLY IMPORTANT THING THAT I SEE IS THAT, JUDGING FROM PHOTOS OF SOME OF THE CHURCH MEMBERS, IT IS NOT A SEGREGATED CHURCH, BUT MIXED RACE. THAT VERY THING COULD BE WHY THE CHURCH WAS TARGETED FOR THE KILLING. AS SOME OF THE COMMENTERS WITH THIS YAHOO ARTICLE HAVE SAID, WHY ISN’T THIS BEING CALLED DOMESTIC TERRORISM? WE ARE SO BUSY STICKING TO OUR PARTY LINE THAT WE CAN’T LOOK CLOSELY AND HONESTLY AT THE SITUATION.

THIS IS PART OF THE ALT-RIGHT ACTIVITY. SOMETIMES THEY BECOME VISIBLE IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA, BUT THEY ARE ALWAYS IN THE BACKGROUND SPREADING THEIR LIES AND HATRED. THE JANUARY ARTICLE BELOW ON THE FEDERAL HATE CRIME BY DYLAN ROOF, WHO ALSO KILLED MULTIPLE CHURCH PEOPLE IN SOUTH CAROLINA, HAS ONE PIECE OF HOPEFUL NEWS. ROOF WAS GIVEN THE DEATH PENALTY – THE FIRST DECISION OF THAT SORT IN THE USA.

I HOPE THAT IT WILL BE THE FIRST STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION, TO BE FOLLOWED BY MANY MORE. WHAT WOULD HAPPEN, I WONDER, IF ALL OF THESE PEOPLE WERE STRIPPED OF THEIR AMERICAN CITIZENSHIP OR SIMPLY DECLARED AN UNLAWFUL ORGANIZATION, AND IMPRISONED FORTHWITH. I KNOW. WE JUST CAN’T DO ANYTHING LIKE THAT. MAYBE THE TIME WILL COME WHEN THE CONSTITUTION WILL BE CHANGED TO ALLOW IT, THOUGH. THE PROBLEM IS CONSIDERABLY MORE WIDESPREAD THAN I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT EVEN TWO YEARS AGO, AND GROWING.

Computer image of map: At least 26 dead, 20 injured in shooting at rural Texas church

At least 26 people were killed and 20 others injured when a gunman stormed a church in rural Texas with a rifle this morning, said Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Victims' ages range from five to 72, authorities said.

The alleged shooter, a 26-year-old man, is also dead following the massacre in Sutherland Springs, about 40 miles southeast of San Antonio, bringing the total number of fatalities to 27, authorities said.

The shooter allegedly fled the scene in a vehicle and was later found dead in the vehicle in Guadalupe County, according to the sheriff and the Department of Public Safety. It's not yet clear if he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound or if he was shot by another person, officials said at a press conference this afternoon at Stockdale City Hall, near the church.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called this the largest mass shooting in Texas history.

14-year-old girl among the victims

Among those killed at the First Baptist Church was a 14-year-old girl named Annabelle Renee Pomeroy, according to her father, Frank Pomeroy, who is a pastor at the church.
Annabelle “was one very beautiful, special child,” Pomeroy told ABC News by phone.

Pomeroy said he was in Oklahoma this morning -- a rare weekend that he wasn't at the church.

The other victims are all close friends of his, he said.

A woman who said she works at a gas station across the street from the church told ABC News she heard rapid gunfire around 11:15 a.m.

Congregants fled the church and ran to the station cowering for cover, she said.

“We heard several shots and we all started running inside the store,” said the woman, who said she is 49 but declined to give her name.

“It lasted about 15 seconds," she said. "I yelled, ‘Get down! Get inside!’ and we all went into hiding.”

Within minutes of the gunfire, emergency personnel arrived at the scene, she said.

She said the gas station locked its doors and has not reopened.

A church turns into a crime scene

Police formed a perimeter around the First Baptist Church and flooded its grounds with emergency and police vehicles, according to ABC affiliate KSAT-TV in San Antonio. Agents from the FBI and ATF have responded to the scene.

Paul Buford, a pastor at another church in Sutherland Springs, told KSAT-TV that his congregation was in the middle of their service at River Oaks Church when they started getting calls about the shooting.

Members of his church who are first responders rushed out while the rest of the congregation immediately started praying.

A portrait of the shooter emerges

Authorities identified the shooter as Devin Kelley, 26, of New Braunfels, Texas, which is about 35 miles from Sutherland Springs, federal and state law enforcement sources told ABC News.

The investigation into his background is unfolding. The suspect’s Facebook profile appeared to show a picture of an AR-15 –style gun. A LinkedIn account that is believed to be associated with the shooter suggested that he had a military background.

Trump and Texas officials react

Trump has been briefed “several times” and is continuing to receive regular updates, said White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders.

Gov. Abbott said in a statement, "Cecilia and I want to send our sincerest thoughts and prayers to all those who have been affected by this evil act. I want to thank law enforcement for their response and ask that all Texans pray for the Sutherland Springs community during this time of mourning and loss."

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said in a statement, "The thoughts and prayers of all Texans are with the people of Sutherland Springs as tragic reports come out of First Baptist Church."

"Please join Angela and me as we pray for those impacted by this horrific shooting,” Paxton said.

3 church shootings in 3 years

The massacre in Texas is at least the third deadly shooting at a U.S. church in the past three years.

In June 2015, white supremacist Dylann Roof shot and killed nine black churchgoers during a Bible study at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina. In Jan. 2017, Roof was sentenced to death.

In Sept. 2017, a gunman allegedly stormed the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ in Antioch, Tennessee, fatally shooting a woman in the parking lot before entering the church sanctuary, shooting and wounding six people.

Last Sunday, Pomeroy delivered a sermon at the church, encouraging parishioners to "lean on the Lord," even when circumstances don't make sense.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not rely, or lean, on your own understanding," he said. "You see God's understanding is far greater and there may be things that are taking place that you don't understand but you still need to do what God's calling you to do."

Blaming the GOP, the NRA, liberals, Muslims.....I've got news for you people, the blame falls squarely on all of us for letting our country rot from the core, something is very, very wrong here. I grew up in the 1950s-60s when nearly every single home, even in the city where I grew up, had at least one firearm for hunting or maybe Dad's gun leftover from the war, our televisions were full of westerns where people shot each other all the time, yet I can't recall one mass shooting happening here in those years (I'm sure youall will correct me if I'm wrong). This is more then guns, immigrants or political parties, this problem starts in our homes, our families, etc. We need to wake up.

PHOTOGRAPH -- Law enforcement officials gather near the First Baptist Church following a shooting on November 5 in Sutherland Springs, Texas.

Police say a 26-year-old Texas man who once taught Bible study shot and killed at least 26 people and injured 20 more inside of a church Sunday. Devin Patrick Kelley, who lived in New Braunfels, a San Antonio suburb, was identified by authorities as the suspect in what’s the deadliest mass killing at a house of worship in modern U.S. history.

Police say that around 11:15 a.m. local time November 5, Kelley, wearing all black and tactical gear, started firing a gun from the outside of First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs. He kept shooting as he entered the church and took aim at parishioners who were gathered inside for a worship service. One of the victims was the 14-year-old daughter of the pastor at the church. The victim’s ages ranged from 5 to 72-years old, police say.

Police said that after the shooting, Kelley fled the area in his vehicle, and residents pursued him through Guadalupe County. He was found deceased inside the vehicle after he crashed. It’s not yet known if he shot himself, or if he was shot by those chasing him.

Police looked through Kelley’s social media profiles prior to him being identified, and his Facebook profile was deleted hours after the shooting. The Daily Beast reported that Kelley was married, and his mother-in-law has a P.O. box listed in Sutherland Springs. His home was raided by agents following the shooting.

On October 29, Kelley posted a photo of what looked like an AR-15 semiautomatic weapon with the caption: “She’s a bad b**ch.” He reportedly used the photo of the gun as his cover photo. The shooting took place exactly one week later.

A LinkedIn account claiming to be Kelley says that he served in the United States Air Force from 2009-2013 and taught Bible study at VBS at Kingsville FBC.

Photograph -- Devin Kelley.

Devin P. Kelley, who received a court martial from the U.S. Air Force, was identified as the black-clad gunman who walked into the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, on Sunday morning and slaughtered at least 26 people in the tiny, rural community near San Antonio.

The shooter’s name was reported through sources by The New York Times and CBS News; the latter gave his name as Devin Patrick Kelley, 26, of New Braunfels, Texas and said the Air Force court martial occurred only three years ago. Although the motive was not yet clear, the gunman’s background includes religious school work, but he also liked pages devoted to atheism. The shooter, who is dead, left behind disturbing social media posts, including a Facebook page that showed off a rifle, calling it a “bad b*tch.” (You can see the photo later in this story.)

Authorities revealed that a heroic and unidentified citizen in the church “grabbed his rifle and confronted the suspect,” who was armed with a “Ruger AR assault type rifle.” The local citizen pursued the suspect, who ran off the road and crashed and was found deceased in his vehicle. “We don’t know if it was a self inflicted gunshot wound or if he was shot by our local resident who engaged him with gunfire,” authorities said. It was the largest mass shooting in Texas history.

The horrific mass shooting wounded almost everyone inside the small country church building, which held only about 50 people in the town of only a few hundred people. The victims ranged in age from 5 to 72, authorities said. “This will be a long suffering mourning for those in pain,” said Governor Greg Abbott, confirming that 26 people had died. Authorities would not confirm the suspect’s name, and they said they were investigating, but could not confirm, reports of possible militia ties. However, Heavy has learned that the shooter’s wife says on Facebook that she is from Sutherland Springs, and her mother was pictured in photos at the Baptist church (online records show her name is Danielle Shields, which CBS has confirmed).

As many as 30 other people were injured, with at least one in critical condition, reported CNN and an ABC producer. A KSAT-TV reporter at the scene said that an “ambu-bus” had responded, which is used to transport multiple victims. Pregnant women and young children were reportedly among the victims, including the 14-year-old daughter of the pastor, who was out of town when the mass shooting occurred. All of the victims were still not identified, the sheriff said in the evening press conference, but some families had given names. One young boy, among multiple children shot, is in surgery after being shot four times.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. The Shooter, Who Showed Off a Photo of a Rifle on Facebook, Once Taught Bible School

Kelley’s Facebook page has now been deleted, but you can see a screenshot of the weapon he posted above. His profile picture showed two small children, which was a chilling juxtaposition next to the semi-automatic rifle that was his cover photo. According to The Daily Beast, “Kelley was married and Kelley’s mother-in-law listed a P.O. box in Sutherland Springs as a mailing address. San Antonio police reportedly raided Kelley’s home on Sunday evening…he briefly taught at a summer Bible school.” He lived about 35 miles from the shooting scene.

The shooter was described as a “white male in his 20s from outside San Antonio” by Mike Levine, a journalist for ABC News, who reported that law enforcement had uncovered a weapon photo on Kelley’s Facebook page. “Authorities are now scrubbing his social media; on Facebook in recent days, he showed off an AR-15 style-looking gun,” Levine wrote.

Devin Kelley’s LinkedIn page says that he was a VBS “teacher aid (sic)” for “VBS AT KINGSVILLE FBC” and notes, “Dates volunteered Jun 2013 – Jun 2013 Volunteer duration 1 mo. Cause Children. Teaching children ages 4-6 at vocational bible schools helping their minds grow and prosper.” However, multiple children are reportedly among those shot in the church. Kelley’s Facebook page also showed that he had liked pages devoted to atheism, as well as those on German Shepherds, Glocks, and karate.

Despite rumors on social media, there is no evidence that he was a member of Antifa or carried out the attack on behalf of the far left group. There is also no evidence he converted to Islam and was a practicing Muslim, as other social media rumors have claimed. Although he liked multiple atheist-related pages on Facebook, it is not known if he considered himself to be an atheist or was simply interested in it. Some doctored photos have circulated on social media, and people identified the wrong people as suspects early on.

Kelley had recently shaved a beard, he wrote on Facebook recently.

Reporter Matt Massey wrote that “neighbors say they heard shooter may have reloaded multiple times, around 50 people usually at service.” He reported that at least six helicopters were called in to transport victims.

According to CNN, “The shooter was killed after a brief chase north into neighboring Guadalupe County,” according to Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Robert Murphy.

2. The Gunman, Who Is From Comal County, Once Wrote That He Lived By the Air Force’s ‘Core Values’

The LinkedIn page in the shooter’s name shows that Devin Kelley served in the U.S. Air Force right after high school, from 2009 through 2013. According to The New York Times, Kelley is from Comal County. His motive and why he targeted the Wilson County church remain unclear. Comal County is located northeast of San Antonio, Texas. The Daily Beast reported that Kelley was a “resident of New Braunfels, a suburb of San Antonio.”

Kelley’s LinkedIn page says, under the entry for U.S. Air Force, “Cargo, demand and supply , distribution.” He added, “Basic learning on my contracted job.” The page says he attended New Braunfels High School from 2003 to 2009, receiving his diploma. His LinkedIn page also says, “I am a hard working dedicated person. I live by he (sic) core values on which the Air Force go by.” He identified himself as a “management consulting professional” and said he was CPR certified.

However, CBS News reported that the suspect is former “US Air Force E1 (2010-2014). He received a dishonorable discharge. He was court martialed in May 2014.” The network also wrote, “Kelley is a former U.S. Air Force member who served from 2010 to 2014. He was dishonorably discharged and court martialed in May 2014.”

The scene outside the church was heartbreaking as crying family members of loved ones gathered outside, desperate for information about them, and praying. A local hospital has reported receiving multiple victims. The ATF was responding to the scene, as did the FBI. Authorities had said very little in the hour immediately after the shooting because they were dealing with the mass casualty event. However, just before 6 p.m., the governor and other officials held a news conference.

Texas Governor Abbott condemned the “evil act,” writing on Twitter, “Our prayers are with all who were harmed by this evil act. Our thanks to law enforcement for their response. More details from DPS soon.” CNN reported that a “witness, a cashier at a gas station across the street from the church, said she heard about 20 shots being fired in quick succession while a church service was underway around 11:30 a.m. local time.”

3. The Gunman Was Dressed All in Black & Wrote That He Did Not Fear Death

Devin Kelley’s social media accounts contained other warnings. His Facebook page contained a quote from Mark Twain about not fearing death. “I do not fear death,” it read. “I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.”

Authorities say the gunman approached the church around 11:20 a.m.: “He was seen dressed in all black. He started firing at the church. He moved to the right side of the church and continued to fire, then he went in the church.” He was “dressed all in black tactical type gear and was wearing a ballistic vest,” said authorities in the press conference. Multiple weapons were found in Kelley’s vehicle, although authorities have not described them. The San Antonio Express-News reported that authorities were checking Kelley’s residence for explosives. It’s not clear what they found.

Witness accounts agreed on this: The male suspect walked into the church and opened fire. “A man in full gear came into the church and unloaded several rounds, and then took off in a vehicle,” a KSAT-TV reporter said in a live report on Facebook Live. The FBI was at the scene after the tragedy unfolded. “Officials say 23 people were found dead inside the church, two outside, one transported and died later,” reported CBS News.

People on Twitter and Facebook wrote within minutes that a man, possibly with an assault rifle, had shot multiple people. People posted frantic messages on social media about loved ones. Witnesses reported that the man walked into the church around 11:30 a.m. Sunday and opened fire, KSAT-TV reported, adding, “The church is located in the 500 block of 4th Street in the small, south Texas town about 40 miles east of San Antonio.” (Recent population figures said the town has only 362 people.)

Assault rifle reports first originated on social media. “Oh my God if you live in Sutherland Springs or Wilson County please go in side and stay safe. Pastor Frank Pomeroy oversees the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs. Pomeroy’s wife, Sherri, told NBC News that her husband was out of town during the shooting, but their daughter was inside. Frank Pomeroy later told ABC News that their daughter, Annabelle, 14, was one of those killed. Pomeroy described Annabelle as “one very beautiful special child” to ABC News. Over and over again, people offering condolences on the Facebook page of the pastor’s wife described Annabelle’s sweet demeanor.

“My husband and I were ironically out of town in two different states. We lost our 14-year-old daughter today and many friends,” Sherri Pomeroy said Sunday to CBS News. “Neither of us have made it back into town yet to personally see the devastation. I am at the Charlotte airport trying to get home as soon as I can.”

First Baptist Church, of Sutherland Springs, Texas, has posted videos of its services on YouTube. That raises the possibility that the shooting was captured on video, although this is not yet clear.

Youth are heavily involved in the church. “The youth are also involved in many outreach and community service activities such as visiting a local nursing home, running a concession stand, helping neighbors clear property after a storm and participating in our church workdays,” its website states. “We meet every Wednesday at 7:00 PM, Thursday at 7:00 PM and Sunday at 9:45 AM. Come as you are. We are looking forward to meeting you!”

The news of the shooting broke first on social media as citizens with instant access to a national audience reported that their loved ones were in peril or had witnessed aspects of the shooting or its aftermath. One man said that people he knew were inside the church. He wrote on Facebook, “Just got a call from (named removed) prayers needed for Sutherland Springs community. Someone went into the Baptist Church and shot 15 people. The guy is one the run and they have the roads closed down. (Names removed) were at their church in LaVernia. Please keep prayers going.”

“I’m hearing there was a shooting at the First Baptist Church on 539 near Hartfield Rd in the Sutherland Springs area. Lots of sheriff’s deputies on scene, blocking traffic. EMS from all over Wilson County have been called in. Multiple victims,” one social media user wrote. Another man wrote on Facebook, “A bunch of people have been shot in Sutherland springs . The church and gas station people walked in and started shooting so far herd 15 dead maybe more.” People gathered at a local community center to learn about their loved ones.

SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Texas -- A gunman opened fire inside the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs Sunday, killing and injuring multiple people, authorities said.

A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that more than 20 people were killed in the shooting. The official, who was briefed on the investigation, was not authorized to discuss the investigation and spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity.

The official said between 10 to 15 people were also injured but stressed the investigation was early and the figures could change.

The shooting suspect has been identified as Devin Patrick Kelley, CBS News has learned from federal law enforcement sources.

A law enforcement official confirmed that the gunman is deceased. He was shot after a car chase with police, but it's unclear if he shot himself or if he was shot by police, CBS News' senior investigative producer Pat Milton reports.

"We still don't know much about what happened, other than this guy came in around 11:15 a.m. and started shooting everybody in the church," Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said on CBSN.

Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt told Wilson County News earlier that a man entered the church and opened fire. He said there were multiple casualties and fatalities. CBS affiliate KENS confirmed at the scene that there have been "multiple casualties and fatalities" including children.

The Connally Memorial Medical Center told CBS News it received multiple victims related to the shooting.

Video from KENS showed first responders at the scene, located about 30 miles southeast of San Antonio.

The daughter of the church's pastor was one of the victim's killed in the shooting, her mother Sherri Pomeroy told CBS News via text message.

"My husband and I were ironically out of town in two different states. We lost our 14-year-old daughter today and many friends," Pomeroy said Sunday.

She added, "Neither of us have made it back into town yet to personally see the devastation. I am at the Charlotte airport trying to get home as soon as I can."

Dana Fletcher, a business owner in the area, told CBS News she saw a "ton" of sheriff's vehicles and ambulances racing down the road. She said she doesn't know what happened but said there was heavy police presence and people were being airlifted from the scene.

Special agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said they were responding to the shooting.

A law enforcement official said an FBI crisis response team is on scene to offer assistance to local police, CBS News' Milton reports.

The FBI will be offering evidence recovery, offering to check through databases to see whether this person has any connections to international terror to see if its a terrorist event or a domestic situation, Milton reports. She says officials looking into it but they don't know the motivation at this point.

President Trump said on Twitter that he is monitoring the situation from Japan.

"May God be w/ the people of Sutherland Springs, Texas. The FBI & law enforcement are on the scene. I am monitoring the situation from Japan," Mr. Trump tweeted Sunday.

Sen. Warner on Sessions' knowledge of Russia contacts: "A picture's worth a thousand words"

Sen. Mark Warner, D-Virginia, said Sunday -- in light of recent charges filed against former Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos -- that congressional investigators would like to hear from Attorney General Jeff Sessions again if there is any information he needs to clarify.

"Listen, I want to give the attorney general the benefit of the doubt, but a picture's worth a thousand words. The fact that Mr. Papadopoulos was there with that meeting with ... then-Senator Sessions -- if, if there's more information that he needs to clarify, we'd like to hear that," Warner said Sunday on CBS News' "Face the Nation."

Court documents unsealed over the past week have renewed interest in whether Sessions misled Congress when he testified recently that neither he nor anyone else was in contact with Russian operatives during the 2016 presidential campaign, CBS News' Jeff Pegues reported.

Last month, Sessions testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee that neither he nor anyone else was in contact with Russian operatives during the election cycle.

Pegues reports the court documents unsealed this week claim Papadopoulos, who pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about the nature of his contacts with foreign nationals, offered to set up a meeting between then-candidate Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Papadopoulos made the offer during the national security team meeting.

Warner now says the Senate Intelligence Committee, on which he serves as vice chairman, still needs to get answers from high-ranking Trump officials with knowledge of previous Russian contacts, following the charges against Papadopoulos, as well as Paul Manafort and Rick Gates.

"There's obviously enormous concerns as well, when the campaign manager and the deputy campaign manager are both indicted as well. I think there are many more chapters in this story to be told," said Warner.

He added that there are also still a "number" of "principals" that the committee would like to see and speak to, including President Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr.

"We've talked to a lot of the folks who were in that so-called June 9th meeting. We've been holding off on the principals until we get all the preliminaries done," said Warner.

He added, "There are other figures that are, are affiliated with the Trump organization that were at the senior-most level that we're going to want to talk to. We also want to continue to explore from a policy standpoint this whole question around social media."

This past week, Warner, along with his Senate and House colleagues, focused their ongoing probe on social media's involvement in the spread of disinformation and Russian-financed ads leading up to the election. He said that representatives for those sites have taken longer than he'd like to respond to the issue.

"The fact that for a relatively small amount of money, $100,000-plus, plus a series of fake accounts, the Russians were able to contact or touch 126 million Americans with their fake news or their stories that were trying to sow discontent. And that was before even Facebook acknowledged the additional hits that were used on Instagram. It means there's a lot of stories there that need to continue to be unraveled," said Warner.

He added, "You know, these are great, iconic American companies. They've changed our lives for the better. I want them to be successful. But there is also a dark underbelly that's been created. The Russians used it this, this past election."

Warner suggested that lawmakers need to take the "lightest touch possible" with regard to potential legislation in handling future missteps by social media sites and political ads.

"As a pro-tech guy, somebody who was in the tech business longer than I've been in politics, I think we need to take the lightest touch possible. But the basic requirement that there ought to be the same disclosure for political ads on the internet that, that exists for ads that appear on your show I think makes sense," the senator added.

Bernie Sanders campaign manager: 'I don't think any of us imagined' Clinton's team controlled the DNC
by Pete Kasperowicz | Nov 3, 2017, 7:40 AM

The former campaign manager for Sen. Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign said he had no idea that Hillary Clinton's campaign was effectively running the Democratic National Committee months before Clinton secured the Democratic nomination.

That revelation was made in a new book from former DNC Chair Donna Brazile, who said Clinton's campaign took complete control of the DNC when it still wasn't clear Clinton would be the nominee.

Brazile called that situation "unethical," and said it amounted to "corruption" in her mind when she discovered it.

"It was obviously a shocking revelation," Jeff Weaver, who ran Sanders' campaign, said on CNN Friday.

"It was pretty clear that they were on the Clinton side ... I don't think any of us imagined that there was actually a formal arrangement giving the Clinton campaign control of the DNC," he said.

Sanders supporters complained that the DNC was in the tank for Clinton all along, a suspicion that Brazile seemed to confirm on Thursday.

Weaver said he has talked to Sanders about it, but said in terms of next steps, Sanders' team would continue to work with members of Clinton's team and others to reform the DNC in time for the 2020 election.

IS THIS A LOVEFEST BETWEEN ELIZABETH WARREN AND BERNIE SANDERS? I DOUBT IT. I THINK SHE'S TOO AMBITIOUS FOR HER OWN ENDS FOR ME TO TRUST HER.

Elizabeth Warren Is Treating Bernie Sanders As the Leader of the Democratic Party
By Ed Kilgore

Photograph -- Photo: Barry Chin/Boston Globe via Getty Images

The political world is understandably paying enormous attention to Senator Elizabeth Warren’s agreement with the proposition that the 2016 Democratic presidential nominating process was “rigged” against Bernie Sanders. It represents an assertion of malfeasance by a major party leader who endorsed Hillary Clinton in the primaries last year, an assertion that even Sanders himself has not made. And so Clinton enemies from bitter Sanders supporters to Donald J. Trump have joyfully cheered Warren’s statement.

But in the same interview Warren also said something that is not drawing much attention, and it’s not about the retroactive argument over what happened in 2015 and 2016:

“This is a test for Tom Perez,” Warren continued. “And either he’s going to succeed by bringing Bernie Sanders and Bernie Sanders’s representatives into the process, and they’re going to say it’s fair, it works, we all believe it, or he’s going to fail. And I very much hope he succeeds. I hope for Democrats everywhere. I hope for Bernie and all of Bernie’s supporters that he’s going to succeed.

Warren is pretty clearly saying that Bernie Sanders and his supporters will be the arbiters of the party’s nominating process looking forward to 2020. That’s remarkable. It gives the Sanders “movement” a unique status in the party, more or less as compensation for the terrible wrong done to them in 2016. And Warren is also suggesting the unhappy afterlife of the Sanders/Clinton competition not only can but should continue until the People of the Bern are satisfied.

It’s more than a little unclear how that’s supposed to happen. The fundraising and staffing arrangement that Donna Brazile has injected into the simmering discussion of the 2016 primaries, which is the proximate cause of the current controversy, obviously isn’t going to recur in 2020; whoever runs for president, no one is likely to be in the dominant position Hillary Clinton occupied in 2015. And a lot of the state party primary rules that were originally the basis for (frankly not very compelling) claims that Clinton stole the nomination from Sanders are set by state legislatures (a majority of which are controlled by Republicans), not Tom Perez or the DNC. So exactly what is it Perez is supposed to fix, and Sanders and “all of Bernie’s supporters” are supposed to bless?

I can’t answer this question, or the related question: What is Elizabeth Warren thinking? Perhaps she misspoke or simple wanted to convey her anger at what Brazile had disclosed. But it sure looks like she’s designating Bernie Sanders as the leader of the Democratic Party for the time being, with the DNC functioning at his sufferance. It’s always possible she wants to run for president in 2020 and believes Sanders will not run; her new solidarity with the Sanders movement might be useful in that circumstance. But Warren really owes it to her party to be a peacemaker instead of an instigator when it comes to the chronic Democratic temptation to fight the last war.

I DON’T OFTEN AGREE WITH DONALD TRUMP, BUT I DO ON THIS DNC ISSUE. THERE SHOULD INDEED BE A CONGRESSIONAL PROBE ON THE SITUATION. OUR POLITICAL CORRUPTION ISN’T JUST COMING FROM THE OUTSIDE, BUT FROM THE DISHONESTY AT THE HEART OF THE FIERCE DESIRE FOR POWER THAT IS SO MUCH A PART OF A GOVERNMENT THAT SHOULD BE, INSTEAD, ABOUT PURSUING GOOD LEGISLATION.

ON THE OTHER HAND, DNC COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR XOCHITL HINJOSA CLAIMS, AT THE END OF THIS ARTICLE, THAT BOTH CLINTON AND SANDERS HAD AGREED TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE DNC, AND ONLY CLINTON ACTUALLY DID THAT. BRAZILE IN HER BOOK, STATES THAT CLINTON “EFFECTIVELY TOOK CONTROL OF THE DNC MONTHS BEFORE SHE WON THE NOMINATION.” I SUPPOSE IT DEPENDS ON WHEN SHE “TOOK CONTROL,” AND WHETHER THAT WAS BEFORE THE JOINT FINANCIAL AGREEMENT WAS MADE. DID THEY PURPOSELY EXCLUDE SANDERS EVEN BEFORE HE FAILED, SUPPOSEDLY, TO CARRY OUT HIS PART OF A LEGITIMATE FINANCIAL BARGAIN? I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MUCH MORE ABOUT HOW SHE “TOOK CONTROL,” AS WELL. I WONDER HOW MUCH BRAZILE’S BOOK WILL COST.

PERSONALLY, I WANT TO SEE FEDERAL CONTROL OVER EVERY ASPECT OF ELECTIONS, FROM VOTER CERTIFICATION AND REGISTRATION, CAMPAIGN FINANCE RULES, AND POLL BOOTH PROCEDURES, TO LOGICAL AND FAIR RULES ABOUT WHO IS EVEN ALLOWED TO RUN FOR OFFICE. BY THAT, I MEAN SOME QUALITY-BASED STANDARDS SUCH AS HONESTY, EDUCATION, PROFESSIONAL STANDING SUCH AS A LAW DEGREE AND LEGAL EXPERIENCE, AND LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE IN MORE AREAS THAN JUST BUSINESS. [TRUMP, BY THE WAY, HAS NO LAW DEGREE, NOR ANYTHING FURTHER THAN A BA DEGREE IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION. SEE THE “WIKIANSWERS” COMMENT BELOW.*] AND ABOVE ALL, THERE SHOULD BE NO BIG BLACK MARKS SUCH AS A HISTORY OF MONEY LAUNDERING, A FRAUDULENT “UNIVERSITY” WHICH HAD TO PAY FINES FOR RIPPING PEOPLE OFF, AND ESPECIALLY NO AFFILIATION WITH A FOREIGN POWER TO INFLUENCE AN ELECTION. I KNOW. THAT HASN’T BEEN PROVEN YET, BUT MUELLER IS WORKING ON IT.

WOULD BE POLITICAL CANDIDATES ON ALL LEVELS, BUT ESPECIALLY THE PRESIDENCY, SHOULD QUALIFY FIRST, AND RUN LATER. IT’S TOO MUCH OF A POPULARITY CONTEST LIKE A HIGH SCHOOL BEAUTY PAGEANT. LOTS OF HYPE, BUT LITTLE REAL IMPORTANCE. WHATEVER “PUFFERY” – LITTLE WHITE LIES – THAT THEY WANT TO USE TO MAKE THEMSELVES LOOK LIKE WINNERS SHOULD BE IN ADDITION TO THEIR BASIC PROVEN CAPABILITY.

*FOR INSTANCE, DOES TRUMP HAVE A LAW DEGREE? NOPE:

In a new book, Brazile says that former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton effectively took control of the DNC months before she won the nomination.

"As Hillary's campaign gained momentum, she resolved the party's debt and put it on a starvation diet," Brazile wrote. "It had become dependent on her campaign for survival, for which she expected to wield control of its operations."

The agreement established that "in exchange for raising money and investing in the DNC, Hillary would control the party's finances, strategy, and all the money raised," Brazile explained.

The DNC issued a statement claiming that the party had been neutral even though Clinton was the only candidate with a joint fundraising agreement with the party during the presidential primaries.

"The DNC must remain neutral in the presidential primary process, and there shouldn't even be a perception that the DNC is interfering in that process," DNC communications director Xochitl Hinjosa said in a statement. "Joint fundraising committees were created between the DNC and both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders in attempt to raise the general election funds needed to win in 2016. Clinton was the only candidate who raised money for the party through her joint fundraising committee with the DNC, which would benefit any candidate coming out of the presidential primary process."

Officer helps boy celebrate 8th birthday after no one picks him up from school

Last Updated Oct 27, 2017 9:12 AM EDT

It was his eighth birthday, and no one picked him up from school.

The boy sat in a school office, waiting for one of his family members to show up, when Officer Darryl Robinson arrived. The school called the Green Bay Police Department in Wisconsin after failing to reach an emergency contact.

When Robinson walked in the door, he immediately recognized the boy — he's had some history with the family. The boy's parent is incarcerated, Captain Keith Knoebel explained to CBS News, though he wouldn't elaborate.

"It seemed like he was in good spirits. He was playing around," Robinson said at a press conference on Wednesday. "He was excited. It was his birthday."

Robinson volunteered to give the 8-year-old a ride in his patrol car.

"He was very excited to ride in one," Robinson said. "I brought him to McDonald's, got him a sandwich. He loved playing with the toy in his Happy Meal."

For about 45 minutes, Robinson spent time with the boy — talking, playing and showing him around the city — until he was able to get in touch with his grandfather and reunite him with his siblings.

Robinson was just doing his job; he never expected the story to go viral.

The police department posted about Robinson's kind act on Facebook, and the post quickly racked up thousands of likes and shares.

"I think it's great, great for the community, great for our department to have a good relationship with the people in our city," Knoebel said. "It's a great thing."

Hundreds of people praised the officer online, thanking him for taking care of the child in need.

"What a fine officer. No one is more committed to the community than Officer Darryl Robinson," one Facebook user wrote. "That little boy will remember that for the rest of his life."

"I think i just felt my heart break," another wrote. "Thanks to the officer for making that boys birthday a little better."

Birthday or not, Robinson said he would have acted in the same manner.

"Officers do this every day — not just police, but different public service jobs as well. All of us do this. It's not rare," Robinson said. "I think it doesn't get recognized enough."

This won't be the last time Robinson expects to see the boy, and he hopes it will be under better circumstances.

"I do plan on making contact with him in the future and checking on him to see how he's doing," he said. "If he wants to come tour the police station or see more things that we have to offer here — and play with the lights and stuff, we'll be happy to do that."
